  • In part five of our solar installation series we are drilling holes in the roof, running wires down to the solar controller, installing a shut off switch from the roof & placing the solar panels on the roof of Dad's 5th Wheel.
We are installing 6 Hi-Tech Solar 200 watt solar panels equaling 1200 watts of solar onto our Dad's 2014 Brookstone by Coachman 5th wheel roof powered by 4 Fullriver 224AH AGM batteries, the Magnum Pure Sine 3000w Hybrid inverter/charger and the Magnum PT-100 MPPT Solar Controller with advanced remote and BKM monitoring kit. This is a multi-part series so be sure to stay tuned as we work to bring all the videos to you. This is part 5.
Also we have a fulls parts list and wiring diagram available on our website at www.pauhanatravels.com/solarguide.
We are trying to upload to our channel 3 times a week and have come up with the following video schedule:

Enjoying watching the Solar install. I get a kick from Dad's closing comments. Looking forward to watching the RV Nomads movie.

I like the way you are breaking down the videos. A lot easier to follow then when you did Johns system.

Thank you. We wanted to provide a very easy to follow instructional series because it is such a complicated subject matter. I am glad to hear your understanding it!

Awesome to see your solar install! We are in the process of installing the same brand panels as you are, 2 HiTech 200 watt solar for our 18 foot Wolf Pup 17RP Toy Hauler Travel Trailer! I am prepping the HiTech panels for roof mounting now and wasn't sure where to locate the mounts but I think your mount location is best. Thanks!

Love the solar videos! Curious...Maybe you answer in your next video...I have a PT-100 as well and wired my 200w panels in strings of two. I started getting an "Limit Int Hrz" message under PT Status. When I asked magnum they said the minimum PV Volts is 60 for the PT-100. Did you happen to have this message with your panels wired this way? The tech at Magnum stated some units have the problem some don't..

Maybe a silly question, but is there a neutral or ground wire needed in the combiner box as well as the negative? Same with the panels? I’ve seen videos of some folks doing this and others not. Just wondering.

Shouldn't there have been a ground brought down from the roof as well grounding all the panels to the chasis?

Great series! Have you found shading to be an issue from the A/C or the TV antenna? Wiring them in series then parallel is a great way to reduce the current on the only long run. From the roof down. A great advantage of the MPPT charge controller.

We don’t think it will be a big deal. Dad has been using it the past 2 weeks without issue.

Hello from Canada. The question I have with the various videos I have seen with installing panels on the roof is how do you know where to drill? Do you have to hit the beams or is there wood or something under the fiberglass that will hold the lag bolts? How long a bolt do you use if the mounting is 1/8" metal or something? I thought many RV's run their wires over the roof. Any chance of hitting something important when drilling and or screwing the bolts? How big a hole do you drill compared to the size of the bolts so it will hold, but not crack the fiberglass? Would it make any sense to run the wires down the side of the RV in a conduit cover of some type that does not look too stupid? I am not sure yet, but I am thinking of 200W of solar on my unit. I have yet to justify it because boondocking in Ontario is so rare. I was thinking with a cheapo set up of 2 x 100 W with a 20A PWM controller that I could at least add 60-110 Ah to my batteries every decently sunny day. I know you have an amazing system, that is not in the cards right now, but if I can get the panels somewhere decent then the rest is not that expensive. Any thoughts you might have would be appreciated. I really enjoy your work. Sorry about all the questions, but you seem to be the one to ask. BTW I really miss Brock and Jannine on You Tube. Travel Safe Henri

Thanks for the questions. Most RV roofs are 1/2 inch plywood covered by either fiberglass or a rubber membrane. When securing the panels to my fiberglass roof, my intent was to secure to the plywood layer. I used #10 x 3/4" sheet metal screws and drilled a pilot hole just large enough for the threads to grip tight. The most important part is to use Dicor under each mounting bracket and over all the screw heads. If used properly, the Dicor will provide more holding power than the screws. If you wanted to contact your manufacturer, you may be able to acquire a build schematic detailing where the aluminum is located. I don't feel that is necessary. If i screwed into metal, that was a bonus. There are a few people who have run conduit down the side of the RV because of difficulty routing the wires from the roof to the battery compartment. For your 200W set up, I would suggest a portable type solar panel rather than the difficulty of mounting on the roof. With a portable set up, you can move them as the sun moves across the horizon.
Again, thank you for watching our channel and asking the questions, that is why we do this. We are also missing Brock and Janine.

Part 6 is coming soon. We are in the middle of production of the movie RV Nomads so finding free time to edit the video has been hard to come by. It’s coming though I promise.
