Wow! Well done getting through that muddy leg! The laughter was delightful, though. Bet you’re hankering for Bluff. Someone needs to write the Hankering for Bluff Blues 🤣
You won't forget that section in a hurry! That mud/swamp looked pretty relentless and slow going, both physically and mentally exhausting. No doubt you'll all be pleased to have that behind you. All the best for the next 4 days.
So great to see you guys on the home stretch. I've been really enjoying all your videos which made me even more determined to set out on the TA myself within the next few years. Cheers from Dunedin!
so funny how the video seems like its a walk in the park :) It wasnt as muddy as I remember. Last yeat was a pretty rainy summer, so for me (187cm) I was often more than knee deep in the mud. Still a very demanding section. The way out is still a tough one but very beautiful. Amazing Forrest and a great way to finish the trail how it began. on the beach
DOC should put in boardwalks, not just for the comfort of walkers but to prevent the widening of the track as people walk on edge of the track to avoid the mud.
I bet walking in that mud was fun and a flashback to being a kid. You could tell everyone was tired. What an experience though. Memorable. Ironman Ritchie was the only one that seemed to show no effect.
I figure if you’re taking the time to write me, I can take the time to write back or at least acknowledge that I’ve read the comments. They have been super-encouraging for our group along the way.
Great video Kurt. Amazed how well you all took on the trail but I guess Longwood is a rite of passage for all TA walkers. Wondering though why not use tall gaiters for that section of the track? and Dome etc. Would protect your shins and help keep your shoes on.
The gumboot song comes to mind: "If it wern't for your gumboots where would you be ? You't be in the hospital or infirmary, You would have a dose of the flu or even pluracy, if you did't have you feet in your gumboots!'
No problems whatsoever with your videos. Gee the cicadas are as loud down there as here. The sea is in your nostrils. Beautiful gnarly forest. Laughing mud time. "Up the middle that's plan" Do you think it's a commercial viability of facial mud packs? A new business. The shantiest of all huts - Martin's Hut. WELL DONE ALL!
@freedom_on_the_trail it wanted to be a lasting momento. A souvenir haha. Sticky awful mud. The pāpa mud up here can be like that. The few times when we've had to scrub and hose that off our back verandah. Oh for TAs haha. It got to the point of telling TAs ... "DON'T come onto the verandah with your muddy shoes" or "take your shoes off over there!" It was funny watching you lot go through ... 😃 ... in time a fond memory and a laughable story 😃👌
I hunted Merrivale and the longwoods a lot so well used to that mud but I usually stay off the main tracks.
I couldn’t imagine trying to carry a rifle and navigate the mud at the same time. Good idea staying off the main tracks.
The hut there at Martins hut has had some major work done on it recently which was overdue, it's a lot better now
That’s what I hear. As bad as it was, I’m glad I have the memory of staying in it before it was repaired.

Sounds like a great title for a new hit. But I don’t think my skill set is going to produce that kind of music at a quality level. 😂
Thank you for taking us along on your journey 😊
Thanks for watching!
Loved hearing the happy laughter coming from Alex, I admire her spirit!
Good on you all, that was quite a day.....
She certainly brought a lot of fun to the day.
Oh my word, the mud is just crazy. Slop slop!. Haha, Alex's laughter was just brilliant. I mean, what else can you do hey?😅
Nothing to do but laugh.

It will certainly be on my mental highlight reel for a long time!
The girls had fun😆
Richie commented once, “The Canadians have lost their minds!” I think he was not far from the truth.
Those are some quality laughs round the mud. I wonder if Longwoods ever gets dry.. Seeing Bluff like that would of been epic!
I don’t think that area would ever dry out. And yes, that was a pretty special moment seeing Bluff like that.
So great to see you guys on the home stretch. I've been really enjoying all your videos which made me even more determined to set out on the TA myself within the next few years. Cheers from Dunedin!
Thanks for that. I really hope you get to do it!!

I agree. There is something therapeutic about ending in reverse how we started this trail back in October.
DOC should put in boardwalks, not just for the comfort of walkers but to prevent the widening of the track as people walk on edge of the track to avoid the mud.
I would imagine that would blow their meagre budget pretty badly.
needs some drainage ditches cut..

He was pretty tired at the end of the day too, just too cool to show it. 😂
@@freedom_on_the_trail Ahh, ironman gets rust.
Great video! We had trouble fitting 6 in Martin’s Hut as one guy was over 6foot. Epic day with no rain😀
We were fortunate with the weather that day. But the forecast was foreboding…
@@freedom_on_the_trail thanks so much for taking time to answer all our comments 😊

1. Where the term “if you didn’t laugh you’d cry” comes from.
2. What is it about mud & puddles that brings children & adults so much joy?
Good points. I think it’s just the pure childishness of the situation that comes out and brings so much laughter.

Those tall gaiters are so heavy, especially when caked with mud. Plus, half the fun is getting covered with that mud.
The gumboot song comes to mind: "If it wern't for your gumboots where would you be ?
You't be in the hospital or infirmary,
You would have a dose of the flu or even pluracy,
if you did't have you feet in your gumboots!'
Sounds like a catchy song.

The shantiest of all huts - Martin's Hut.
WELL DONE ALL!
I don’t know about the facial mud packs. It took a long time to get it washed off at the end of the day. It just didn’t want to let go.
@freedom_on_the_trail it wanted to be a lasting momento. A souvenir haha.

🙂
I remember watching your videos of this section pretty closely…especially the place where you can first see Bluff.
@freedom_on_the_trail It's the place where the end is in sight and then the wind blows some dust in your eyes .
😉
The track looks dry compared to normal.
It certainly wasn’t as bad as we had heard
