Using Te Whare Okioki as a base, three of the tramping party take an out and back day hike to Wairere Falls. Rain, mist, clouds made for an eerie setting all day. And then... Kurt makes a costly decision that puts the team in a bit of a time pickle. What was it? Watch to find out and learn from his mistake.

A nice memory created. If it's any consolation it is a cool wet day here. More like Autumn. Have a wonderful time. Noho haumaru 🙏
Thanks so much, Rob. Hoping to come over your way early next year for a quick visit. I’ll let you know first, though. 😉
Awwhh so cute !!! "Is it my waterfall ?" "Yes it's your waterfall" 😍
I love the innocence of her question. What a special time that was😊
I so enjoyed that hike, PK and Claire !!!! Thank you for taking me along in the pictures ..and you have a nice throwing arm !!!
Thanks for coming along. We’ll have to wait and see if that throwing arm develops into sporting abilities.
Adorable
She is, isn’t she? Made that short hike really fun…and really long! 🙄😂
Nice to see you again. Hope you and your family have a good time together over the holidays.
Thanks so much!
Congratulations 🎉 another little miracle ❤
Absolutely is! thank you so much
Awwh little cutie! Congratulations 😊
Thanks so much. It's been amazing watch how much she's changed in the week we've been here. So much more alert. I've really been enjoying your TA videos, but I have to say, I'd rather be here right now with my granddaughter than out on the trail. 😁
Congratulations!!!!! Super cute!!!!!
Thanks Sarah. Am going to enjoy watching your TA vlogs now that they are coming out.
Enjoy the new Mokopuna. Grandchildren certainly bring great enjoyment to us old people ❤️
That's the truth!
Congratulations on the new grand baby!
Thank you so much!
Goood moorning Kurt. Wanted to let you know ive spent past week and a half re-watching your Te Araroa video's and as previous thoroughly enjoyed every moment of you and Richy and then Barb fulfill your dream. Stunning my friend , the determination and stamina to keep going to the end . I could see that you were getting very tired towards the end but you kept going. Well done, I take my hat off to you. Thanks again for taking us on your journey. Cheers , SteveG
Thanks so much for those kind words, Steve! Wow, they really mean a lot to me. I've been enjoying rewatching the videos as I write my book and so many times I shake my head at some of the situations we found ourselves in. What a crazy but thrilling experience! Thanks for taking the time to watch again and thanks for taking the time to write. It's always so good to hear from people who enjoyed the videos. Cheers!
@@freedom_on_the_trail. Thanks Kurt. Your book ,I'm sure , will be great and I'll be getting a copy for sure. Cheers SteveG
The hut there at Martins hut has had some major work done on it recently which was overdue, it's a lot better now
That’s what I hear. As bad as it was, I’m glad I have the memory of staying in it before it was repaired.
I hunted Merrivale and the longwoods a lot so well used to that mud but I usually stay off the main tracks.
I couldn’t imagine trying to carry a rifle and navigate the mud at the same time. Good idea staying off the main tracks.
Good evening mate , Great news about your wife..good thing to about living in New Zealand our health care wont make you 1000000s of dollars in dept,.I left Te kuiti to start the TA trail but it was closed for lambing. do so Ive just Decided to walk all over New Zealand for the next 13+ months..doing bits of the TA when I'm in the Area. At the moment I'm halfway to Stratford on the Forgotten World Highway its incredible mate. So much history to see and read. But my pack is seriously hurting my shoulders so much, trying to find a way to make it more Comfortable but nothing yet. Ive done over 133km already on tarmac lol. Hoping for nice trails but only long winding hilly roads ahead. Been doing around 27km a day just to get to a place to camp. I opted out of the hammock after night 1. I really a good lightweight tent. The packs around 15kg but probably more for this current 7-8 day walk.. I tell yah mate all my training has not prepared me for the real thing 😂. But super grateful to have the opportunity to walk freely without a time limit..
Good on ya, mate! Sounds like a pretty amazing journey!! It does take a bit for your shoulders to get used to the pack. I also found that there's a pretty important balance between the shoulder straps and hip belt on your pack. When my shoulders got sore, I would tighten the hip belt a bit. If my hips got sore, I would tighten the load lifters or the chest strap a bit. I also experimented with how I packed my backpack. Heaviest item goes close to your back between your shoulder blades. That seemed to help a bit as well. All the training in the world doesn't get you ready for the actual event if you're doing an adventure like yours. But hang in there and pretty soon you'll start feeling a whole lot better as your body adjusts
@freedom_on_the_trail +Thank you for the encouraging words and tips my friend much appreciated ..have an amazing trip to the states
Steak and cheese is my go too
Ahh Good in you being a Pastor and you look like my last pastor just love learning more about you both
The silence at the end bought me to tears the contemplation the excitement the reflection
I still get teary every time I watch this!
Well done for achieving such a huge journey , its amazing to have watched the jounrney and one day i will do this too and you and richie will be on my mind , amazing how much you have change physically and mentally through the journey we are constantly evolving even when where older we csn still learn and grow and adapt
Absolutely! I had a mentor who died in his late 80s. His goal was to learn something new every day! I want to be that kind of guy too
That tiolet recently got blown of its foundations it has gotren thst windy recently , its almost always windy on that beach of ours down here in Invercargill
As unpleasant as it was, I’m glad it was such a windy day. One more memory to carry away
Riverton is a stunning place
Spirits soaring as tou get closer Walking reminds me of life , there is a beginning and a end , there is ups and downs , good days and not so good days , rough turbelant days and sunny peaceful days but its always one foot in front of the other or one day or moment at a time , its not always what we expect and soemtimes our plans change but we are still on track to finshing the good race and the memories and the realtionships that we cherish with some sadness that it comes to a end and its time for new beginnings
Well said, my brother.
All that mud reminds or of stewart island NWC
It definitely deserves its reputation!
Those pods are interesting but I hope its not the future housing solution fir new zealand like Honk Kong , its like human battery hen cages
😂😂 it was a nice change but might take tiny house living a bit too far
So close yet so far
Amen to that 🙏
I love it in wanaka been there a lot for work this year
It’s a nice place. I enjoyed it more than Queenstown
Binge watching whike i do some quotes for work
I do it becaue i love being away from the concrete jungle the radiowaves and in fresh air and nature i come alive i feel rejuvenation even when im exhaisted and i find peace and love a challenge and i quite often go to the south coast track past tutapere as very few go there for solitude but i also like the random people we maybe whete destined to meet
The solitude is so soul-restoring.
Day 110 , getting closer to finishing your series in this epic journey and I won't jump ahead but I'm looking forward to the excitement building
I love it! With a month left to go, we were feeling the building excitement too
48 km is a big effort there richie , amaizng to watch the change in you both
He was a machine!
Me and my son had that for days on the south coast of the stewart island and we almost got hyperthermic and lucky we come across a hunters hut , sideways fierce rain and very strong wind and got soaked through , need to reciat my expensive macpac jacket , maybe always good ti put a cheao poncho over the top too
Yeah. My jacket was pretty dirty by this time and not very waterproof. I think i would have been ok if I had another layer on. Poor planning in my part
@@freedom_on_the_trail yeah I had never been in heavy rain in all my tramps which are not that many really until Stewart island and it was not waterproof and I know now lol hindsight is a great thing and experience
A hard day , the hardest yet maybe and crazy setup at that base if a bit if rain stops the tenting
I was so glad we were able to catch that ride! Although it ruined my no bypassing a section rule, it was a matter of safety for me
You look so tired , it will be so gruelling on the body and at 48 and having done the NWC with my son in January I am so inspired by your journey walking Te AraRoa and I definitely want to do it one . Just amazing the amount of ground you guys covered some days . I love my solitude when tramping so walking with others all the time would not be as satisfying for me but you can make lifelong friendships and the memories of a once in a lifetime experience are shared . God bless your every step
Thanks so much for that. Yes, that was a tough day, both physically and mentally. There were days that the terrain made it easy to cover big mileage, but many days on the South Island were short days just because of the elevation gains. I intended to do the whole TA alone, but found hiking with others was really enjoyable. Having said that, there were many days we ended up hiking alone just because of different hiking speeds. A lot of the trail is single track too, so even if you are with someone, you feel alone because you’re not really talking as you focus on staying upright.
Where are you walking in this video... looks Ike a great spot. Im pleased all is good with your family
Thanks for that. This video was shot at Te Mata Peak in Havelock North. I’m privileged to have such a fantastic park to use so close to where I live.
Hi Kurt, can you remember what date you started Tararuas? I have family on Kapiti Coast and want to try and finish at Bluff early March as you did. It will give me a rough idea of how long I can spend with family.
It’s a bit of a complicated answer but here goes. We left Palmerston on 18 Dec. arrived at Poads Road 20 Dec. Christmas break. Restarted at Poads Road 27 December. Arrived in Waikanae 31 December.
Thanks Kurt, that helps a lot. If I can get through Tararuas before Christmas I can spend time with family and get started in the New Year from Waikanae, my parents live 10 minutes from Waikanae so I am very lucky.
Been missing the percentage dance / chants
We did them more often than we recorded them. But yeah, there was a while that we just focussed on moving ahead. Sometimes the dances were more discouraging because we had out so much effort in with little forward progress. 🤷♂️
So happy your wife is OK, enjoy the family time in USA.
Thanks heaps.
Good news for your wife and you Kurt. Safe travels to the US and all the best for the future. 👍 My TA start date is the 12 Oct, sound familiar? 😃
Thanks! All the best for your perfect start date!!
Those Kayaks you are in have terrible balance and having wieght in front makes it easily tip
Yep. Pretty unstable things. I suppose they’re faster in still water but not good in rough water.
Glad to hear your wife is in the clear Kurt. And i’m so looking forward to your book 👍
Thanks so much
We have enjoyed watching all of your vlogs. Starting SOBO on Monday. Thanks for the inspo 😊
Have an excellent time! Are you vlogging or posting updates anywhere?
I found walking up Panekire from Onepoto a challenge, especially the undulating country on the way to the hut.
It’s a great experience for sure! Getting to Panekiere from anywhere but a helicopter is going to be a challenge. 😂
So pleased to hear that your wife is OK. The weather in the 🎉kaimais will be better early next year. Enjoy your trip and take care.
Thanks so much. And thanks for the input you have given on getting ready for that hike
All the best for you and your wife's trip to the USA!
Thanks heaps
Geez Kurt that is great news can image what your family would have gone through. Yep starting 8 th Oct, you have been a great source of info and inspirational. I will document my journey with videos and photos not quite sure whether I will use insta ( under the same name) or TH-cam will be in sections though not daily posts. 😊
I’m a bit jealous. Have a fantastic time. I look forward to following your updates.
That's great news, Kurt. All the very best to you and yours. I'm looking forward to your book.
Thanks so much for that.
So happy to hear your wife's cancer is not back I have just started to watch your Te Aroroa series and got up to the interview with you and your wife just love watching your videos I'm 48 and love tramping and look forward to completing your video series and what the future holds , God Bless
Thanks for the comments. My wife is a very special person and I was glad people got to know her a bit through those interviews
Bittersweet news about Lisa, bitter the anticipation, sweet the final results. I’ve lost 2 family members to cancer this year, 60 & 56yrs so it’s a privilege to get to your 60s, young man 😉 I might be able to help with accommodation and drop off for the N/S track if that’s helpful, wanting to do myself again but a bit quicker than your plans. Safe travels overseas 👋
Thanks for that, Dave. So you're going to be doing the NS Track in 3 or less days? Wow!
@@freedom_on_the_trail Done it almost over two nights before, (exited midnight), it’s audacious granted but then again, I don’t do ordinary as you well know 😂
Take care and best wishes for you both. Looking forward to the book release.
Thanks so much!
This track reminds em if thr NWC in on stewart insland i did in January with my son by far the hardest walk i have ever done
Yep. By far the muddiest section on the North island. But wait…there’s more! 😂
