7 Effective Tips for Presenting Data at Work!

- Apparently you lose all credibility by using Pie Charts 🥧, so in this video, I share 7 Data Storytelling Tips to Improve Your Presentations to colleagues, managers, and senior leadership!
One of the most important skills to build in the workplace is to present data in an effective way. Data by itself is useless, it's how you interpret and how you present that data that will separate you from your peers. Data Visualization often means creating graphs and charts that tell a compelling story - a story that captures the audience's attention and makes them want to take action.
One of my favorite data storytelling tips is to use color purposeful to highlight one or two important elements in your slide. Our brains are wired to recognize patterns so colors are great to focusing our audience's attention. Furthermore, waterfall charts (waterfall graphs) are amazing at showing how two numbers relate to one another. This type of graph is used by many consulting firms (most notably by McKinsey Consultants).
Comparison graphs are also great at bringing the data to life: What would happen if Option B happened instead of Option B? And can we put a number to the difference?

Hi Jeff and thanks for the many tips. There's a good book about presentations : The Presentation Secrets of Steve Jobs (by Carmine Gallo). I did the french translation and I think it's a great book.

Hey Jeff, First of all: Great video ❤ as always...
There were some tips that I often use like Colors and consistent formatting, to which your explanation was great.
I would love to have a video on how to make slides, but more than that I have something in my mind which I have researched but didn't find the proper answer to. Also, I think you can do a great job in explaining that thing. I think documenting what you are doing is a great way of learning. One of the reasons is that you can always go back to see what you have done so far and decide what is the next step. I think it benefits the working professionals as well as students. . But, there must be some proper way of doing so. I have been doing so in my projects and while I am learning something new, but I believe there is a lot which I must be missing out on and you can help me with.

I’d personally love to see a video on making slides from scratch! Idk about you but I tend to have a bad habit of cramming as much on each slide as possible so some tips on info distribution would be a lifesaver 😆

You can create the stickers yourself using shapes + text box :). Waterfall chart you can create from Excel or Google Sheets! 😁

I liked the video in general. One question: are pie charts really that bad though? Aren't there some situations where they might be useful? For example, I think they represent percentage shares really well.
So I actually asked my colleagues in Strategy & Ops team about this and they said it's fine to use Pie Charts it's just not encouraged since it's just not easy for us to differentiate the sizes of individual slices within the pie chart

Was in charge of a brand in my previous job and wow, I unconsciously applied most of these!
I remember those days where behind that one slide of simple, pretty, insightful slide, are hours of data tweaking and PPT editing 😂

Also pie charts are actually good when showing how a product dominates (or dominated) in a market share. Just make a visually good design of it.
