Keep your beautiful smile and optimism brother to share how to save the world in a garden !
Hi, We are in Thailand we'll try some of your systems because most of channels I follow are in France...not very useful for the climate. Your channel will be a great source of info and idées. Thanks.
Great video. I've seen it before but had to watch again. Your food forest talks, and permaculture philosophies are interesting and make total sense. Something clicked as you explained the journey from pasture to orchard to mid secession to full canopy. Your example of the old permaculture food forest systems by long standing native cultures at places like Green Lake (banana groves, bread fruit, kikoi nut trees,..) show just how in tune ancient native peoples were with their environments. Its something to strive for.
Sean, just watched this video again. Thanks for the map because I can use it as a guide if I decide on a smaller property like yours. It'd be nice to see an update on the food forest after one year. What's trees are producing fruit, etc. Just a suggestion. :)
Is food forest possible in Fern Forest/S Glenwood? With its lower levels of soil, good amount of lava, less sunny days, higher elevation, and cooler? But lots of Water! 😅
@@HomesteadinHawaii Yes, can’t wait for it. What a valuable book to all of us in big island w/ so many microclimates. Thank you for shaykh your knowledge.
Thanks for the info Sean! Quick question for you : For the trees that will become large are you jack hammering a hole for them as well as building the layer of soil on top? Or are you just strictly planting above ground? I ask because I see that section of the video where you showed the jackhammer and the hole created.
Aloha! And mahalo for your time and wisdom 🙏 had a question that you could possibly help me with and that has to do with Punas “favorite “ lil fire ant 😅, I’m not a fan of poisons by any means and wanted to see if you had any suggestions Or permaculture solutions to getting rid of or help to minimize the amount of these lil buggaz. If can can no can no worries! Again mahalo for all the wisdom 🤙

@@HomesteadinHawaii Eh, we're always going to be able to go deeper, but this video did a great job of overview while without overloading, and will give folks enough material to work with. Plant selection for hardiness zone, sunlight/water/nutrient needs, spacing, years to bearing, etc. may be good to dive into a future video. Could break it down into each canopy level for your area to highlight key plants. It's been great to have this way to see where you're putting your energy. Glad you're spreading the word.
I wish I made a channel 10 years ago when I was working on a project in Malibu, but the next best time is today and it's been fun! Thanks for the tips. I have been playing around with a spoke and hub model for this video. This one was my main food forest video, then I'll get into planting, Tropical plants for the different layers, fertility for a food forest and so on and then they'll all point back to this one video. It's supposed to feed the TH-cam algorithm. We'll se what happens. when are you going to start a channel about your farm? Still in tough with PSC at all?
@@HomesteadinHawaii As soon as I get a spare moment from doing the work, haha. 2k perennials going in this year into the front field to expand the u-pick. Putting more intentioned focus on better stewarding the soil's microbiology through foliar sprays. Possibly building out a shipping container-style barn space. Beginning to experiment with plant sap analysis for targeting my nutritional program. Lots of learning edges. Just need to get to a place where I don't feel like I'm still sprinting to establish the farm's systems. :) And not in touch with the PSC since leaving CA, really. It's been challenging to keep up with West Coast connections as time has passed.
I haven't gone through all the comments here, the native inhabitants of Central and South America created a soil called Terra Prita, it's heavily based on carbon from charcoal. It should help with both water and nutrient retention. Also burying woody material that will break down and act like a sponge should help with water retention.
