  • Today I took an initial look at the Anbernic RG505, an Android based emulation machine.
This device supports up to PS2/Gamecube games. With a 2GHz CPU and 850MHz GPU, it is quite a potent little machine for the price. Is it any good though? We will attempt to find out at face value, if this device is worth your hard earned cash.
If you like this content please let me know, I have more intended for the future + long term - proper reviews.

Of course, just as I uploaded this there was an OTA update which changed the android frontend. It now seems to pick up the PS2 games and Wii/GameCube in the new front end. Still, not being able to manually add your own via software is a shame.

Thank you for your review! It's definitely worth to try this console, especially after developer confirmed that started to work on custom firmware based on linageOS including latest rp3+ gpu drivers!!

Oooh that is very interesting to hear. I've read into custom firmware on these devices (retro handhelds) but it's not something I've dabbled with yet. I will have to in the near future.

I am slowly getting the idea behind it. As well two updates have been pushed for the front end since I made the video.
Playing PSP games at 2x res (most games) is a treat.
As well playing the older content at 4:3 with perfect black pillar boxes is quite good as well.
While I still hate the stick placement, it is nice knowing they didn't skimp and went for the hall effect sticks.
If there were a revised device with a stacked trigger/bumper combo and asymmetrical sticks it would be killer, ergonomically.

Mine also has GameCube, Wii, and Wii Ware thru dolphin(MMJR2) it's black bg with purple dolphin logo. This was preinstalled as well as the 26 emulators covering PS2 and back.

I'm skeptical about getting another Anbernic product because my sd card on my 351p corrupted and I cannot for the life of me correctly download another firmware. Either it doesn't boot at all or AmuElec doesn't get past the boot screen. I am a newbie to emulation. I like the form factor of the Rg505 but can't see myself spending that much for emulation when I can get a switch lite for a bit more. These devices running Android is what caught my eye but I'll just use my cellphone. If the price comes down maybe.
Great video by the way. I learned more about the 505 than in the other videos out there.

Some deals can be bad on it. I will say, when I am using the device. I love it. The screen is awesome (although old) but it's more than perfect for emulation.
I tend to just avoid playing twin stick games as that is still uncomfortable.
Edit: thanks for the kind words!

Haha!! I do love dino crisis 1 but found 2 to be so much fun! Thanks for the shout out! Shame about the anbernic, seems a very strange device!
Edit: Cannot believe it can’t handle here comes the pain or PS2 games 😢 who is this device even for is my question! Also that touch screen looks really annoying and ‘sticky’ to use..

There was an update for it, literally after I uploaded my video. It did change around the Emulator Frontend. It added in the ability to pick up my Wii and PS2 Games. However, performance is still...meh, in those titles. As I have been playing more and more PSP games on it, it seems to me as though this is the OLED PSP Pro (if you ever wanted one) Playing those games on the Anbernic 505 is honestly a treat. The screen really makes the games pop (at 2X resolution) as well, playing older content at 4:3, thanks to the OLED you get perfect pillar boxes with no light bleed. I would say this is definitely a high end, handheld emulator (PSP, 3DS etc) with some light, curated (due to the thumbstick placement) GameCube games. As for the touch screen, it still is slightly annoying to use, albeit I have the PROVIDED screen protector applied. I'm sure if I took it off there would be better responsiveness, however seeing as it was supplied with the unit, I feel it is apart of the unit (optionally).

I still use this on the subway, admittedly though I'm playing retro games from the she's era mainly on it. PSP performs and looks fantastic on it as well
The mmjr build did help with perf in some games. I just hate twin stick games on it honestly.

It's a nice device, underrated, a replacement for the original PSP/Vita, I'm using it for that. I tried to play Liberty City on the original console, and the difference is huge. It seems that is running at 20fps!. It's a pity it can't run PS2 complex games. But it has its flaws, maybe not for a newbie. Also, playing it with a controller improves the experience

When you go through the different consoles of games you know how it shows the pictures of all the systems in that particular format? Mines don’t do that how do I get mines to do that? My SD card didn’t come with that many games at all either. I bought my anbernic from Amazon.
