  • If we can get 150 likes on this video, Gottfreid will return to give his advice on McKinsey's Personal Experience Interview (PEI) in the next video!
    In this video, Neel interviews Gottfreid to hear more about how he landed McKinsey's post-MBA role even though he comes from a non-target MBA program and has ZERO years of work experience. He talks about his background, how he strategically built up his resume and experiences, and networked + cased his butt off to land and be successful during interviews. There are a lot of actionable pieces of advice you can apply to your prep process in this video.

    (sorry apparently the comment's too long, idea's to try to copy and paste it into smaller chunks so fingers crossed!)
    Excellent effort Neel! Thank you Gottfreid for coming along to the Q&A video as well! In case it helps as ideas for potential future videos topics:
    - I get the impression that having Gottfreid come for another video or two or more (depending on how many you feel could, would and/or should be needed to cover more information) could have a certain level of merit. E.g. you could've some video work done on his personal experience interview/fit type questions (e.g. how he answered questions like: why do you want to work at McKinsey/in consulting/as an associate? etc... Can you walk me through your CV? Where do you see yourself in 5 years time? etc...), some more video work on the topics(s) of his covering letter and/or CV/resume (in London/England, they tend to use the word CV instead of resume), his experience with the online problem solving tests (and/or equivalent), plus any mistakes/lessons he feels he learnt which others could learn from let's say (and/or anything else), another thing could be to potentially include some information relating to how he tried to potentially overcome any nerves/feelings of self consciosness and/or insecurities before/during/after the application process, how he felt as someone applying not just from a target school but from an ethnic minority e.g. did he feel in the back of his that maybe some consulting/white shoe firm recruiters only looked at him as a way of metaphorically ticking diversity related boxes? How come and/or how come not? How did he manage with that?
    - also in case you already haven't (sorry I got brain fog/concentration problems from depression at the moment but I mean well), you could potentially do some video work on the topic of resume and/or covering letter writting e.g. how and with what information plus presentation you put your consulting covering letters/CVs together, you could explain your reason(s)/situations, plus also give advice to other people on how they could potentially try to avoid mistakes you feel you made and/or learn from your experiences (e.g. one thing I got recommended years ago was on the topic of extra curriculars at college/undergraduate university courses was to not worry about doing lots of extra curricular activities but to instead focus on doing less and committing to them by doing them properly so that you can make a meaningful impact without burnout hopefully if that makes sense?), another thing is that you could potentially try to use example resumes/CVs from students/recent graduates let's say and analyse/critique/advise them so that other people can learn (names plus personal contact details let's say and/or anything confidential could be censored/blurred out let's say), I personally would be honoured to be able to email you guys my personal CV/resume and have it included in some video work where you potentially use it to give advice to people on the topic of CV/resume writing, if possible? (fair enough if not, fingers crossed for if yes!).

    • @razabadass
      @razabadass 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      - the topic of metaphorical stamps on the CV/resume (e.g. I've come across having it described as pedigree on CV/resume) e.g. with target schools/universities/business schools (e.g. having Oxbridge, Ivy League, M7 or equivalent) education related and/or internships big brand name graduate recruiter internship names (e.g. bulge bracket, big four accountancy, big three consulting, big tech, fortune 500 and/or equivalent internship related names let's say), sorry this could be an extremely sensitive subject to some people (e.g. here in the UK there is a culture among some students usually those classed as straight A/A* students/big expensive private boarding schools/from the social and economic elite to take what's known as a gap year - a year one year break between high school/A Levels/International Baccalaurette, specifically just to reapply to prestigious universities usually Oxford and/or Cambridge although I have comes some situations where people have and/or also would've done it to able to reapply to the LSE and/or Imperial College London).
      Sorry for feeling clumsy here but I mean well, the point I'm trying to make here Neel is that yes, as far as I'm aware at least you've started this TH-cam channel with the intention of helping people from non-target universities (and I think that has merit mainly because hard working students from poorer backgrounds can face the double whammy of not only ending up facing extra barriers of coming from a non-target but also be disadvantaged by the fact that they're far less likely to have existing people in their lives for guidance on things like education/career in general let alone the more commpetitive graduate recruitment/consulting/white shoe firms in general).
      The topic of target universities/pedigree on CV is something which I feel does need be learnt about by anyone remotely interested in entering graduate work in general but especially anyone trying to make meaningful applications to white shoe firms, yes it might be sensitive and/or be seen as the elephant in the room in certain situations by some but I think that it needs to be researched/learnt about by people at some point or another.
      Like what I mean is that, Neel I think it could be excellent for you to do some video work at some point in the future on the topic of target universities/pedigree on CV on how and/or this idea having big brand name universities/awards/graduate recruiters on your resume has the potential to give you a leg up so to speak. (e.g. I've been told that that among other things, there is unfortunately a culture of some people in the city/on wall street having high noses about where they did or didn't get their formal education form, that recruiting directly out of big brand name universities is seen by consulting firms as something which helps to impress their clients/build credibility with big CEO clients that the 20 something year old consultants have a certain level of intelligence/work ethic let's say and another argument I've across is this idea that top students tend to as a rule of thumb go to the top universities, another thing I've been told is that there is a recognition that talent exists elsewhere but that campus based recruitment tends to be focused on universities associated with having stronger concentrations of top talent, another thing I read is that campus recruiting especially in the US can be considered expensive e.g. firms might have to fly some employees onto various campus sites which can not only mean paying for money and having time taken up by sending people to campuses with food/travel accomodation let's say but also means having less people in the offices/on client sites to work on projects).
      I feel that people becoming more aware of the arguments used to focus on target schools can help them out with their reseach and/or learn what they're up against so to speak. Another thing is that it could potentially help them try to make more informed decisions about where they do and/or don't plus how much effort they do and/or do not put into internship/job/graduate business school applications (e.g. you might have someone do their undergrad at a non-target but then maybe try to work harder in applying for target business schools). This could be sensitive, but you could potentially mention/give your opinion on what you consider to be regarded as the traditionally main target and/or semi target schools for undergrad and/or postgrad/business schools and/or how/where you can recommend people learn those names (e.g. if giving out names for target schools feels too sensitive on video and/or you feel that it might be better not done on video than you could potentially recommend some forums/websites and/or the idea of people looking up on forums/websites if that makes sense?).
      Oh sorry, another thing I've come across is this idea that having big names on the resume is not necessarily the be all and end all but that it's considered to have merit - the idea being that if you've gone to a top tier university and/or interned at a big name graduate recruiter then you're considered to have been given a metaphorical stamp that says that you've gone through a vigorous selection process and reached a certain stage (or as one guy once described to me in a more stronger direct way: you're considered to be potentially worth looking at more closely/being called up for an interview). Another thing is that I've been told is that recruiters tend to get a lot of resumes to look through while already feeling fatigued on top of their regular work let's say and that having a big name or two or more on your resume can be considered a lazy/easier/convinient way of filtering/short listing people.
      Another thing is that I feel that you could also potentially do some video work on how to potentially work around the idea of lacking/building up metaphorical stamps on the resume (e.g. making sure that you have a stronger set of grades/exam results/GPA, well presented resume that's concise, extra bit of interview prep/industry research, voluntary work, trying to go for leadership positions in clubs and societies and/or making an impact/excelling at what you do if that makes sense?)
      Sorry I got clumsy, I mean well and I feel that it's something that you could talk about a lot better plus a lot more smoothly, I just feel that I've come across a certain sensitive culture of high noses among some people in the city/Canary Wharf in London where people can seem to be judged essentially based on not necessarily the size or quality of their efforts/studies but based on the names of universities/organisations where they've formally studied and/or been given positions in before and yeah.
      - something else which I feel you could potentially do some video work on is the topic of how to try to break into consulting if you feel that you're late so to speak, e.g. if you're feeling interested but only really heard about it after internship and/or graduate recruitment seasons let's say and/or what people can/could do there? e.g. maybe do some pro bono consulting work? How could people potentially try to get in as lateral hires? Maybe take a year and upgrade your CV with some work after graduation in an equivalent way in which the London based consulting youtube lady did? (sorry I'm trying to avoid names but I mean well, the idea of mentioning people by name however innocently could be described as something which has come to feel like a sensitive subject over the years and yeah but I mean well).
      - Also just remembered Neel, collaboration type videos could potentially be done with some of the other consulting related guys on TH-cam? I get the impression that you could excel at that a lot.
      - Something which has also come to mind is the idea of talking about other consulting firms outside of MBB? Potentially having some people interviewed who work there from both target and/or non-target schools as well? Could also do some more interviews with people working at MBB as well.
      - I get the impression that you could also do an excellent job at interviewing people on how/why they are leaving/have left consulting? The topic of exit opportunities? Alumni network? Whether or not MBB/consulting in general lives up to the hype? e.g. is/could it sincerely be worth spending several months preparing for casing interviews which you might or might not get and/or which might or might not work out for work which you might or might not like?
      - Something I think you could also excel at in case you haven't already done so is the idea of talking about some of the not just plus points but also potentially minus points e.g. up or out, feelings of burnout, how fun/hard/fancy/time consuming travelling might or might not be, how to quote unquote deal with sensitive situations at work e.g. if you feel that the client's demanding, boss is too horrible, working with people you might or not have friction with let's say.
      - Another thing could be on the topic of how to convert a hopeful internship into a job offer and/or an entry level position into a promotion.
      Sorry for the longer and clumsier then intended message, I meant well and hope that it potentially helps.
      Well done with the video work again Neel!
      Raza =)

      @@neelandrohit6490 Also just remembered, reading your reply, reminded me of the series of articles about Mergers & Inquisitions which I read recently (as far as I remember, brain fog's not feelign 100% but I'm feeling pretty confident that the person behind the website mentions some information about how charging not necessarily a lot but some money for resume/CV advice work helped him significantly cut down on emails he received for CV/resume advice - thought I'd let you know in case it potentially helps), not sure how much of a difference it might or might not potentially make, but thought I'd post the link on here in case any of the articles in the 5 part series end up coming across as potentially being worth a read for you? www.mergersandinquisitions.com/how-i-started-this-site-part-1-2007-2008/ Raza =)

    • @razabadass
      @razabadass 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@neelandrohit6490 Oh and also just remembered, sorry in it's been said before and/or sounds repetitive (as far as I'm aware I haven't pointed it out), in the videos somewhere I think you mentioned that you not only get but (I think) also accept some requests for casing interview practice (video call) sessions, I get the impression that it could potentially be worth charging some money or at least thinking about charging some money for that idea.
      Not necessarily a lot but something other then zero dollars could potetially help you try to focus your efforts more on people who feel the most serious about consulting (e.g. five to ten or twenty to thirty dollars - big enough to not be zero money but small enough to still be affordable for a student from a poor background - they could try practising by themselves first initially as part of the preperation to help them make the most of your time and/or something else which could be considered helpful to you in a meaningful way e.g. permission to use the footage for TH-cam work, a client website testimonial and/or a sincere review/recommendation related comment on LinkedIn let's say to help you grow in a meaningful way).
      Sorry for the longer and clumsier then intended message Neel and Rohit.
      Oh and another thing which just came to mind. Not sure if it's been mentioned by me and/or anyone else (sorry if it has and/or sounds repetetive let's say). One thing which coul be potentially good and/or worth thinking of/trying out is maybe do some interviews with some people? E.g. you work at Bain and could potentially over time try to interview some people in different jobs, departments and/or seniority levels from within and/or around the consulting sector.
      I get the impression that because you've recently started the TH-cam channel work, work in the entry level position I think (associate consultant I believe? Equivalent to business analyst? Sorry for any mistakes) and at Bain & Co. plus have reached a certain stage, that people in entry level/intern positions, other people in TH-cam and/or colleagues at Bain in general could be good to get started with for potential people to interviews. E.g. you could potentially start of interviewing other interns/associate consultants from Bain, do some collab work with other consulting TH-camrs and/or people from Bain in general.
      You could then potentially interview other people who could be classed as getting potentially harder to get hold of once the channel's grown more e.g. people in the recruitment division (apparently they get a lot of covering letters, resumes/CVs and online applications to get through), more senior ranking people and/or people at other firms. I think it could potentially be worth trying to over time get hold of people from not just other MBB firms but also other consulting firms outside of MBB and also people who work in consulting outside the white shoe firms e.g. what I mean is that apparently you can people who work in consulting but as in-house company people (e.g. they might've worked in a consulting firm first and then joined a client as an in-house consulting person if that makes sense?).
      If, when or once any idea mentioned is bad then sorry and that's fair enough.
      Really well done with the TH-cam work! Hope that things aren't getting too stressful or anything!

    Also Gottfreid, sorry, this could be sensitive but I mean well. To what extend do you feel having come from an ethnic minority background (and/or non-traditional background in general) has made in the context of the consulting application process? E.g. do you feel that it made it harder because you among other things applied from a non-traditional target school or do you feel that some people might have tried to hire you as a way of trying to metaphorically tick diversity recruitment related boxes let’s say? (I don’t know about the US but apparently this idea of trying to be able to say that a firm’s intake has come from a diverse background does seem to potentially be seen as a tick box thing for some people in some graduate recruitment/work related circles).
