    I enjoyed Matt Smith’s portrayal of Prince Philip, but I prefer Tobias Menzies’ version because he plays him with more kindness and practicality. Both actors nailed his wit and sarcasm.

      Matt Smith's version was a man that has a bit of fire in him as he struggles to accept the sacrifices hes gonna have to make as the Prince and realises that hes gonna have to learn to be underneath his wife
      The phillip of S3 and S4 is a man that has accepted that he's there to play a key role and will have to tough through the sacrifices in the face of his duty to the crown.
      That's why hes so cold towards Charles with all his complaining and lack of desire to do his duty while Phillip had had a harder life than he had ever.
      Both actors play the role Spectacularly!

      Matt Smith played him very well. He was a young restless energetic man who didn’t expect his wife to be Queen for at least 20 years. He had a plan to work his way up the military ranks. He was headed towards being an Admiral but because of his father in law’s death he had to walk 2 steps behind his wife and make phony “appearances”.

    The actor who plays Prince Philip has really understood the tiny things the eye doesn't even consciously notice. Such a brilliant performance! Prince Philip was an old school royal with a tragic past. It must be very difficult to portray him. Give the actor an important prize of his choice!

      yushi911- It's practically impossible for a reigning monarch to be a good parent. Far too many demands upon your time.

    • @MsJubjubbird
      @MsJubjubbird 2 ปีที่แล้ว +113

      @@StonyRC True. Anne said her parents were wonderful when they were around. But they were often away. They also had the issue that outside influences, like parliament and the rest of the aristocracy, demanded a big say in their children's futures. And that say was based on how things looked on paper, not how the kids felt. So no matter how loving they wanted to be, they had to balance that. I think Edward benefited from being the youngest because the rules had become a bit more lax over the years- Sophie is from an average family- and, as the youngest, others weren't as invested in his future. Anne also found someone she loved soon after her divorce.

    • @derekrulez390527
      @derekrulez390527 2 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      That's the cost of being the royal family. To the average eye, it seems spectacular, and fun and everyone think its a luxurious, care free life when it really isn't. They sacrifice their family for the nation. They don't get to spend time with their children, or rear them how they want. They are constantly having to "work" with appearances and social gatherings. They are always in the eye of the news media and they don't get any days off. Always having to act regal and having the entire world critique your family. Its hard to be a royal and I would probably hate it considering how huge of a sacrifice your family is. Im sure a lot of the family members sometimes secretly wish they were commoners and to live a normal life unmolested by the worlds peeping eyes.

    I keep watching clips, hoping Philip's very best monologue with the Queen, filmed at Belvoir Castle, standing in for Windsor, would show up eventually on youtube. It's the one where Philip recounts something that Tommy Lascelles told him, "and it doesn't make for pretty listening:" It's about siblings, where one is the sensible, conscientious dutiful one and the other is the shadow side (The Duke of Windsor and Margaret:) flamboyant, glamorous, unstable and unpredictable. You want the former (George VI and Elizabeth) to inherit the crown. Tobias Menzies does a masterful delivery of this. I'd love to see it again.

    I loved all six actors who played the Queen and her Consort, but watching these clips reminds me that he was the best - perhaps in part because he got the material to do so - at conveying Philip's very real love for Elizabeth, and that he found her very attractive even when she was past the first flush of youth. Jonathan Pryce was wonderful, and conveyed the loyalty and respect, but the love wasn't really front and center any more. Not to mention his 'emotional affair' with Penny Knatchbull...

    Philip and Elizabeth failed in their most important job: preparing the heir to take the throne. Charles is unfit to be king and that's on these two. Philip favored Anne while Elizabeth favored Andrew, and they let their personal prejudices interfere with their job of preparing the future monarch. Charles showed how unsuitable he was in his marriage to Diana, and time has not improved his character.
