The Unexpected TRUTH About BRUNEI 🇧🇳

  • Brunei Darussalam - the abode of peace, is the only country entirely on Borneo Island. After five months, Flo and I finally met again at our first stop in Brunei. The country has been in the media for many controversial things, but what does it look like on the ground?
I can tell you, it is a pleasant surprise. We explored the deep sides of the capital city Bandar Seri Begawan, and went further into the deepest jungle where we saw crocodiles and other animals.
The locals were extremely friendly, and yes, the country seems to be an abode of peace.
Join me & Flo on this episode outside China in the peaceful country of Brunei Darussalam 🎬

Hi Yan, I went to Brunei last year because I like places most people don't go. I would say, I had the best experience there compared to all other 10 southeast asian countries. The major reason is the mild characteristics of Brunei people. I was told when you blend the Malay personality and Asian muslim, that is what you get. People are so well-lived and well-taken care of in that country, so it reflects in all my interactions with their daily attitudes towars life. Brunei is so impressive, but I will say for tourists who typically want to see major sights may not like it. For travelers who loves culture and experience, Brunei is a must visit/

@@porquee Please come visit! Accommodation, attraction tickets and private hire cabs are the most expensive for a tourist in Singapore but there are many free things to do. Food can be very cheap if you visit the hawker centres, less than $5 USD for a good quality and fulfilling meal. Public transport is also very affordable, it's usually less than $2 USD per ride. If you're coming from the West, Singapore is comparable or even cheaper but it's definitely more expensive than other Southeast Asian countries.

I was born in Seria in 1959 but left when I was three years old because of the 1962 Brunei revolt. At that time, the old Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien, father of the present Sultan of Brunei had to fend off the insurgents of the North Kalimantan National Army. Many of you may not even know about the Brunei revolt in 1962. I myself was too young to remember much. When the fighting broke out, my parents took us to neighbouring Sarawak for safety and we never went back.

@@DuncanLeeSam even among bruneians no one really talk about it except older gens who live through it. A brunei party led by AM Azahari wanted to establish a North Kalimantan state which consist of Brunei, Sabah and Sarawak with the sultan of brunei as the head, however the sultan didnt agree to it. there were interesting accounts from some of the rebels who claimed that they joined "the revolt" because they were told that the sultan was held hostage in his palace, so they thought they were fighting to free the sultan, while some thought they were fighting to chase away the brits. meanwhile according to AM Azahari, the leader himself, said he didnt know there was a rebellion because he was in London at that time and the rebellion was led by other people from the party. Azahari were kicked out from Brunei and lived the rest of his life in Indonesia.

Bruneian Chinese here! I don’t see a lot of videos related to Brunei so it’s nice to finally see a few esp from Chinese youtubers. Saw that you went to Seria town so hope you had a chance to visit the Billionth Barrel Monument and OGDC. A night’s stay at The Empire Hotel, Jerudong or trying ambuyat (national dish) would also be fantastic 😁. Hope you had a great time in Brunei!!

As a Bruneian here, I would like to clarify that the smoke along the highway is actually forest fire due to extreme dry and hot weather we encounter the past weeks. Hi Yan & Flo, TQ for sharing your journey to Brunei! After that, U can try to go over to Kota Kinabalu Sabah, rent a car or bike to Kundasang, for a cooler weather & majestic view of a 3rd tallest mountain in SEA. If time permit, don;t miss & it is nicer to visit the many beautiful islands from Semporna town - those islands around Sipadan (as compare to the so-so Gaya, Manukan, Sapi islands but nearer to KK city). If you drive or biking, be careful as the roads in Sabah are hilly and not well maintained. Since u r there, why not plan to visit wild Orang Utan, Proboscis Monkey etc and if in Semporna, dont miss the try out the seafood there. (but check the freshness & ask the raw price & labour to cook, if self buy seafood at the market or street vendors etc) Enjoy your trip!

Please don’t ever stop making videos 🙏🏻 Your heart is in every single minute of each video and your kindness is woven into the fabric of each film. The way you convey your view of each place you visit is only surpassed by one single person in the world, Sir David Attenborough. To me this is by no means an exaggeration. I’m just trying to explain the impact your films have. I want to visit every single place you’ve been with the exception of the extremely high and narrow places, due to my fear of heights.

Somewhere, below you have a welcome from Nepal. British Gurkha soldiers (provided by men from Nepal) assist with the security of Brunel (not sure about now). I spent a little time there as a Gurkha Officer from Hong Kong aeons ago. But, later returned as an expedition leader with young people travelling to neighbourong Sarawak and Sabah to trek in the rain forest (difficult) or go deep into the forest on boats on smaller rivers. Borneo is truly a paradise. I remember drinking beer poured from teapots pretending it was tea (alcohol is illegal in Brunel - or it was). The people are like the flowers, beautiful! Your video brought back many wonderful memories of Borneo.

Houses on stilts are traditional south east asian architecture.. Even some old british colonial homes are built elevated.
Its to keep wild animals below and solve flooding water flow problem during heavy rain. Toilets normally are located above running strean or river. So floating villages more or less have sewage problems all settled.

Thank you, Yan, for this guided tour of a place I'll never be able to visit. Your travelogues have a really intimate feeling of place, function and history, probably because you connect with the locals, and see the place you're visiting through their eyes, rather than with a travel guide. I revisited your tour of the karst formations in Southern China, one of my favourites, recently. We have karst formations here in Australia, but they are underground. Perhaps you can visit them one day, and show them to the world at large.
