He's an honest, and a damn good, reviewer - so much more so than a lot of others. I'd trust his opinion/rating of a game over countless others simply because he's been around from the start of when games were first beginning to be thoroughly reviewed.
Nikolai Misura The only thing different is weapon switch and grenades. I've been playing Gears 3 for years and really had no problem adjusting to judgement.
When you take out the main focus of the multiplayer being Cog vs Locust then at that point your just playing Call of Duty. esp with the controls reciprocating it... overrun is the only fun aspect of this game
haha you obviously dont play much gears if you think just because its now cog vs cog in multiplayer that it feels like cod more instead. uh the game is still 3rd person... while cod is first person.... you have waaaay more health, where cod you have hardly any.... the game doesnt play like cod one bit. idiot. IF ANYTHING, THIS GAMES PLAYS MUCH CLOSER TO HALO.
I strongly agree with this review. The gameplay in single player campaign was not on par with the other 3 games. I think it's because judgement like to stay consistent with the gameplay, while the others have a more cinematic feel. With better bosses and such. However, judgement brings the BEST multiplayer in the franchise imo. Excellent map design and button interface. Everyone that still plays gears 3 multiplayer is seriously missing out.
Your right I've played more of Gears 3 and I see why people are so disappointed at this game. No more downing people no more planting grenades and the 2 piecing is horrible.
Why is it that is overrun you can't play as the locust or human for the whole time. You have to switch. Also I think the locust should have their original weapons. Kantus, for example, has a hammerburst when he should have a gorgon pistol and ink grenades. Also, why can't the Kantus stun scream like he can in horde and the campaign? He can only heal scream or whatever that's called. Shouldn't he be taller too? Same with RAAM in verses for gears of war 3. He's supposed to be way taller than all the other characters. I don't know. I was just wondering.
For kantus they just wanted to change his load out. For RAAM he would be way to tall and over powered for multiplayer if he was his actual size. So they shrank him for multiplayer
Well they could've given them there original weapons like RAAMS knife and krill but made him have the same health as everyone else. I doubt that'll ever happen though...
Hey Adam. With the final releases of some of Xbox major titles Halo, Gears, ect. do you think we are getting nearer to a announcement at E3 for Microsoft's next console. If they do will the lack of a major title hurt their initial offering or do you think a new IP will push them into this next cycle.
So is it still worth getting for MP? Big whoop Baird wasnt my favs anyways and I didnt fancy seeing what happened before I already had the gist of it anyways.
For someone knew to gears and wants to get into it as far as multiplayer (I dont have a lot of time for single player), would this game be a good start or gears of war 3?
The only real problem I have with gears of war judgment it seems that they cut out so many characters for multiplayer. In gears of war III there were dozens of different people to play as for example. Marcus Phoenix, Dom, Cole, Baird, the queen, all the Carmine's, Raam, Skorge, A handful of different locus, Hoffman, Prescott, and more then I can remember. All gears of war judgment has is a few new coage
Sessler is the trusted reviewer of this Gen without doubt. Love his points and details about new games without bias ways of gaming review. Watching Adam Sessler since his old good days of G4 and boy this guy knows gaming.
Which one should I buy (considering I'm new to the Gears of War franchise) Gears of War 3 or Gears of War Judgement? or should I start all the way from Gears of War 1?
You make a good point about how a game series doesn't need to reinvent itself every time it comes out with a new game but I do expect some sort of innovation. I like Madden a lot but after buying 06 and 07 close to each other and not noticing much effort put into the new sequel, I didn't buy a new one until 11 and am waiting now for some kind of improvement. Haven't bought a CoD since Blops after feeling it barley changed anything so why should I drop $60 on a new maps and 5 hour story?
Has Adam always been doing reviews here or just when X-play was cancelled, or did he leave the show before it was cancelled, i cant remember. (sorry if this is a stupid question)
The rating system is designed to give you a feel for comparison. Reviews are subjective, but you should be able to get an idea for if the game is what you are looking for from the gameplay footage and the highlighting of the pros/cons of the game from Adam's perspective. If what he described as a negative isn't an issue (such as if you are only interested in online gameplay and not the single-player) then add a star to the review, etc.
I played all 3 Gears and love them. One of my favorite game stories. So I "thought" I knew what to expect. I didn't look at any reviews or anything. Just went picked it up and started playing. After a few hours I was just bored. It felt like a chore to play. Nothing kept me glued. Just like Adam said. I backed up my own opinion by looking at other reviews. Adam so far is the only one I agree with.
Adam, how do you feel about this trend recently where games "need" prequels, and they just do not live up to their originals? Look at both GoW (Gears of, and God of War)
it's called the element of surprise i learned that mistake from arkham city. i preordered it when it was first available to, and only knew it was a prequel, fused beast and horde, added a few new weapons, and was about baird and cole's squad, quick grenade throws and free for all which was what really sold me knowing it would be insane. only to pick it up playing a completely different type of game and a total smack in the face to the gears franchise. how can a hardcore fan be happy with this
I have a question everyone can help with. Has Adam rated a game 5/5 on Rev3 yet? What games has he given a 4/5? I could indeed go through previous video but I appreciate the quick help alternative to that currently. Cheers!
i bought this game... got pass the first cinematic then my xbox froze and got the RROD... sounds like the campaign is pretty stale but is the Xplayer worth getting another xbox?
*SPOILER* The two things I don't understand are: 1) Was that supposed to be Marcus that we were supposed to rescue before the group is sent to their trial? 2) How did Baird and Cole meet up with Kim and Carmine? Because the story doesn't touch on it at all.
Wermhats Wormhat Heh, yeah, still free until the 15th, believe me I'm keeping an eye on it, put probably going to bother more to get a free copy of Terraria, that game looks like a ton of fun. Gears of War is just a bonus for me
Wermhats Wormhat Ha ha, I don't know if it's sad or not that I already know that too. I appreciate the tips though :) You can delete the game and download it again as long as MS doesn't delete it from their system too
I agree with you it makes more sense to compare to their previous installment then other games. It shows what efforts developers has done to improve their games. Which the only thing new they have added is that declassify challenge which doesn't make such a big difference in the game.
Gears is my favorite X360 exclusive ever, no questions asked. Having said that, and having played all 3 religiously, I dont see what all the hate is about. While its true the story isnt as thought out as its counterparts, the gameplay is still fast and gritty. Weapon switches, reloads, and grenade tossed feel like theyre sped up to compliment the faster gameplay. I am thoroughly glad I bought this game, and I havent even dove in to the online play yet. If you are in love with Gears, buy it.
It seems a little like Halo Reach to me. It's a prequel, red vs blue, added new powers and you use the LB button to use it, the markza feels like the DMR... there's probably more I left out.
This game is intended for people who have active XBL friends who play it. I've had nothing but gut-wrenching, grin-inducing, blood and limb exploding fun with this game so far. I've played the Campaign twice already and have spent about 4 hours on competitive and cooperative MP modes respectfully. The game is great with FRIENDS or talkative Teammates. Otherwise, it's free-for-all, which is awesome, but not worth 60 bucks alone. The GOW franchise has always been MP exclusive to me. LOVE IT!!!
There are only 3 things I like about Judgement and they're all small things. The first is that you have a huge choice of starting primary guns. The second is how enemies actually die now, and the third is overrun mode. Everything else is garbage.
cheat code central 9.6,polygon 8,games radar 4 stars, inside gaming daily 8.5,joystiq 41/2 stars,o.xbox.m 8,games trailers 8.1,ign 9.2,egm 8,destructoid 9,nzgamer 8.8,every one has a different opinion.this game has free dlc coming on april 2 two new maps, dbno, execution and another multiplayer mode with more content to follow.i respect all opinions to each there own, still buying it.
Good review Adam, I am one of those die hards and gears Judgement is my cup of tea but I could def see how someone new to the franchise would dislike this game. I think the multiplayer was tweaked to perfection everything just feels better faster weapon swaps for more diverse weapon choices, and them really slowing down the pace at which you move and focusing more on tactics is all I ever wanted :)
I completely agree with this review, It was too narrow for the scope and invasion would cause, no dramatic moments stood out like the Dom kills tortured wife type thing. I biggest complaint is how the campaign felt more like horde mode with objectives, and not the Unique feeling previous Gears Stories had. I have a full friends list on my xbox, only me and one other guy has played it, so I dont think this game did very well on the market either. only time will tell...
I've been a long time fan of Sessler more than his past counterparts, but something that always stuck with me was an episode of X-Play where he agrees with Morgan that Final Fantasy 7 was a terrible game with a terrible materia system and goes into further detail. This is my only reserve about Sessler as I find I can listen to him review games I don't even care about, just to hear his points, and that sweet, sweet voice...
This sounds like a much more thoughtful synopsis than Mr. Sessler's...I'll play the campaign, and I might enjoy it more than you did...We might disagree on that. But, at least you have the right approach to your critique, and realize that it's the MP that stands the test of time. Thanks for contributing to the discussion.
Actually that isn't entirely correct Black Ops 2 is actually the biggest launch in the series. It was also the fastest game in the series to reach $1 billion dollars in sales beating all previous games. According to NPD it continues to be in the top 5 games purchased. Sales are far from down.
I was excited to hear that Adam was still doing gaming reviews after he left G4. But he's become a lot more harsh and critical then when he was on X-Play. Although, I would bet a shinny new nickle that he upholds the X-Play tradition and the new Call of Duty still gets a 5/5 this holiday.
I absolutely agree. It seems that the two franchises have run a similar course and took a nose dive on the fourth full entry. It makes me sad to know that I'm going to wait until the games are in the $20 range to buy them because I really do love what the developers have done with prior entries.
If you want to get a perfect score from Adam all you have to do is include a copy of the book with the game... It would also help if you let him write the intro to the book.
The one thing I'd like to add to this review is that their style of playing is more like team fortress 2 than gears 3. Everything is so fast paced, that a kill doesn't really mean anything anymore. Gears 3's slower pace allowed tension to build before a one on one battle. Also, no downing in this game... Yeah.
I would challenge you to your claim. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Engineering, and work as a software/web developer at a Fortune 500 company. I've tutored to the level of Modern Physics, Differential Equations, and have in depth knowledge of computer architecture, dataflow, binary data, database scripts, character sets, bit level arithmetic/logic, logic design, registers etc...I'll let you do the work of discovering what his background is.
my problem with judgement is i dont get the changes with TDM. i dont like how you cant have a lancer with a shotgun. but whatever. it might be the weakest gears title. if you are a diehard gears 3 multiplayer fan i dont think judgement is for you.
I still haven't gotten Judgement. Thanks for this honest review, Adam. Every moron who said that I, and others who didn't hype over this rushed cash-in failure would "get it (Judgement) anyway" can eat a big one. "lolugaizrgoingtobuyit" nope. I wonder where the franchise will be by the time a proper installment to Gears will be due.
I thought RAAM was an epic boss. All the others have been interactive cutscenes, but with him, it was just Marcus and Dom, face to face with the Locust general, on a speeding train! That was sweet.
I was very happy with the tweaks to weapon swapping. The xbox d-pad was always cumbersome. OverRun is down right addictive and I can't say how much I appreciate the inclusion of free for all in multiplayer.
the multiplayer is really fun, tons of weapons and nice maps. only thing is, it only ships with 4 maps for overrun/survival and only 4 maps for team death match, domination, and free for all. only 4 game modes...3 of which kinda get old after the same 4 map rotation over and over and over
You're absolutely correct. I don't own a single sports game. Gears is a cash cow true but if we look at the endless Madden, FIFA, MLB, and NHL series', it's actually quite obvious that sports games are a 'cancer' that can't be stopped.
People aren't complaining about the cost. They're complaining about the PRINCIPLE. In all honesty, its makes no sense to have to pay for a subscription so you can access the other half of a game that you already paid full price for or a service [NETFLIX and web browser] you're already paying for. "Hey bro. I heard you like mulit-layered subscriptions. So I put a subscription in this subscription and wrapped those subscriptions with a subscription dipped in a subscription."
"just think of Tetris, it has no story, but that diddnt affect millions and millions of peoples opinion on the game. This notion that story is the most important aspect of a game is WRONG."....WOW...Just wow...Truer words have never been spoken...That's EXACTLY how I feel...This emphasis on story telling is good for certain games, and not as critical with others...You just made my day...There is hope.
I think a lot of people missed the point of this game. It's not seem deep narrative or epic story - it's a fast-paced, arcade-style shooter with high reply value. It's not meant to stand alongside the 3 other Gears games. I love the Gears of War universe and this game is one of the most fun to play by far.
i actually thought the revamped button scheme and battle mechanic add to an even more hyper and more frenetic gameplay. it helps that it's constantly engaging the player to make drastic decisions they normally wouldn't have in a gears game.....as oppose to crouching beneath a chest high wall and waiting out a wave of enemies. moreover, adam kind of sounds like a fan boy that didn't get his wish. it's not a bad game, beneath the surface of "what it could've been".
I think Adam is a great addition to the REV 3 Games team, but this is Adam's 5th or 6th review (Maybe he has more) but they are all negative. Most times he has been right but Gears of War Judgement has had great reviews from every other outlet. I'm on the fence about the purchase but his 3 out of 5 stars makes me just look to another review...
He addressed this at the end of his Crysis 3 review. It just so happens that the games he randomly picked to review haven't been much better than average overall. It comes with the territory of striving to be objective.
No, he's both. His hilarity doesn't diminish the relevance of his reviews. It's entertaining because it's brutally honest, and you know he isn't bought off. Unlike IGN or Gametrailers.
I do agree a great deal with this review; Judgement isn't a bad game but it does feel greatly lacking in what it could have been as it had the potential to be so much more especially when compared to the previous three titles.
Yea, I honestly am having just as much fun with Judgments campaign that Ive had with the past games. Its not as large in scale of "epicness" or set pieces as Gears 2 & 3 (Which is good, continuous set pieces are getting stagnate),but more enclosed, personal battles of Gears 1.
U can tell that what adam is sayin is on the money because of that system in the game that changes the campeign challenge. I had a feeling that it was going for gameplay and replay value over story and atmosphere. And it was a missed Opportunity to build tension ala halo reach which did a better job story wise. They could of done it right and then u could unlock that campeign challege system as a type of arcade mode on second play throu.
" If I wanted to play Halo or CoD, I would have gotten one of those games" The only changes(other than the weapons) they made were: no locust in multiplayer, only two guns at a time, and no DNBO. How exactly do these changes make GoWJ specifically resemble Halo and Call of Duty?
I'm glad he broke away from his X-Play habits. Any game that had the hype automatically got 5/5. He seems a lot more unbiased in his reviews and I'm diggin' the beard. Keep it up, Adam!
I'd expect an amazing and dark storyline because it is emergence day, when more than half of Seras population was annihilated by the locust. They really didn't take advantage of the whole concept, I was honestly disappointed.
I wouldnt say hes old, id say he reviewed and played video games in the golden age of video games. The times when developers strived to be unique in their creations and truly make something new, not simply mainstream their games to draw in bigger crowds. I would argue thats exactly why Cliff left Epic. He saw what they were becoming and what they would do to his beloved creation and left.
Way to go, you just proved my point about the fan base. COD is not taken seriously by anyone other than the fad gamer. By the way, sales figures for COD are actually down for the newest title in the series. All COD has shown over the past few years is that as long as you have a good marketing game you can sale a series that has declined in quality every time a new game has released. Have fun paying for what is basically $60 dlc every year.
Best way to describe judgment is unreal tournament mixed with gears of war. I agree with Sessler in his review about the campaign, but the multiplayer is very strong, and people can fly made some ballsy decisions; for better or for worse that most AAA franchises never do. Unfortunately this game is strictly for the hard core gears fan, but hell is it fun!
I've been playing gears with my friends for years so the ideal that it's a better experience with co-op is fantastic. I believe however that Adam's review seems to focus squarely on the single player portion of this game when the series has been almost entirely popular just because of its strong MP roots. I have to disagree with Adam's assignment of a 3 out of 5 concerning the knocks against were solely focused on its experience as an entirely single play driven story.
True, it wasn't complicated but I definitely thought it was thrilling avoiding his Kryll and fleeing when he get's close, at least the first time. The fact that it was so simple was what made me feel so into it and what made killing him feel so satisfying. It was just three soldiers doing what they do, and in the end, Marcus and Dom proved they were the better soldier's.
My issue with this review is that he states over and over that this game is more appealing to the die hard gears fan. Yet, he himself basically describes himself as a die hard fan, but is disappointed by the game. It seems to me that the exact opposite is true. Die hard fans may be disappointed, but as a gamer in general I think most would find this enjoyable.
Was really dissapointed with the ridiculously low amount of multiplayer characters and no more locust. Harder to identify who's an enemy and who isn't, considering the blue and red shades don't pop as well as say in Halo.
Getting GOW Judgment for single player may not be worth your $60. I played through the main campaign and finished it in 6 hours on Hardcore difficulty. Plus the Aftermath campaign is 1-2 hours long. Add that up its only 7-8 hours. But you can play at least all of the multiplayer modes offline because AI bots will will in. You get a good amount of replay value with this game.
I never appreciated Adam's impact on g4 but now that I dont see him I must say he is a phenomenal reviewer and I miss him. :-/
Here's our Gears of War Judgment REVIEW! Adam Sessler Reviews the latest game in the Gears franchise, and comes away... let's say underwhelmed?
Appreciate the Sess honesty. Doesn't pull punches just because he's been a fan of the franchise.
marcus WHAT DA FUCK BAIRD ;D
Adam Sessler is great... i remember watching him on X play back in the day... wat up dude !!
He's an honest, and a damn good, reviewer - so much more so than a lot of others. I'd trust his opinion/rating of a game over countless others simply because he's been around from the start of when games were first beginning to be thoroughly reviewed.

When you take out the main focus of the multiplayer being Cog vs Locust then at that point your just playing Call of Duty. esp with the controls reciprocating it... overrun is the only fun aspect of this game
I know of a way this could have been fixed; Have the Locust, but keep the RvB design. What do you get? Red Locust and COG vs Blue Locust and COG,

John Smith Are you questioning my love for Gears? I don't player Multiplayer because I'm not good at any multiplayer. I am a Single Player Player.
I want to know how get young marcus fenix on the Xbox one S?
I strongly agree with this review. The gameplay in single player campaign was not on par with the other 3 games. I think it's because judgement like to stay consistent with the gameplay, while the others have a more cinematic feel. With better bosses and such. Multiplayer is not cool man seriously, that's why a looot of players play Gow 3
Your right I've played more of Gears 3 and I see why people are so disappointed at this game. No more downing people no more planting grenades and the 2 piecing is horrible.
Changed your mind? :D

Best graphics on the 360?
Are they makeing a new Gears of War game but on the Pendulum Wars?
Are the Kryll in this game? One of my favorite enemies in the 1st game has been absent from the last 2.

Why does the sound jump at 4:20?
Will you be at PAX-E this weekend?
You like the controls? So you like wanting to take cover but instead diving out into the fucking open. Stop binding every thing to the damn A button.

i understand how you were confused with that lambent wretch problem, but how are you gonna let that be 75% of your opinion of GOW J?
*SPOILER*
The two things I don't understand are:
1) Was that supposed to be Marcus that we were supposed to rescue before the group is sent to their trial?
2) How did Baird and Cole meet up with Kim and Carmine? Because the story doesn't touch on it at all.
At 3:58 it says "E-Hold under attack", presuming that's emergence hole, good thing they didn't name them ascension holes!
Did the supposedly random spawns add anything to the game?
Wermhats Wormhat No big bosses or set pieces....sounds very odd for a game like this, thanks for the info

I really like the way you ended your review sess. I was wondering if you keep in contact with Morgan ?
To anyone at Rev3Games, when will the reviews for Lego City Undercover and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate go up?
This sounds like a much more thoughtful synopsis than Mr. Sessler's...I'll play the campaign, and I might enjoy it more than you did...We might disagree on that. But, at least you have the right approach to your critique, and realize that it's the MP that stands the test of time. Thanks for contributing to the discussion.
Actually that isn't entirely correct Black Ops 2 is actually the biggest launch in the series. It was also the fastest game in the series to reach $1 billion dollars in sales beating all previous games. According to NPD it continues to be in the top 5 games purchased. Sales are far from down.
there adding them in later for some reason. along with 2 new free maps
It brought back some serious memories of him on X-Play, when he said " A three..out of five". R.I.P. X-Play..
:( I am so bummed rn. Dammit I was really looking forward to GOW Judgement...
what should we do now?
Gears of War Judgement on Hardcore feels like Normal
the multiplayer is really fun, tons of weapons and nice maps. only thing is, it only ships with 4 maps for overrun/survival and only 4 maps for team death match, domination, and free for all. only 4 game modes...3 of which kinda get old after the same 4 map rotation over and over and over
Well done, Adam. Glad to see you doing the reviews right.
You're absolutely correct. I don't own a single sports game. Gears is a cash cow true but if we look at the endless Madden, FIFA, MLB, and NHL series', it's actually quite obvious that sports games are a 'cancer' that can't be stopped.
Will anyone from rev3 do a review of Monster hunter 3 for the wii u? it's pretty much the only title for the system.
I wonder what game will earn Adam's 1st ever 5/5 at Rev3
How do you know?...Where's your review?..Does it match up with Adam's?
I do agree a great deal with this review; Judgement isn't a bad game but it does feel greatly lacking in what it could have been as it had the potential to be so much more especially when compared to the previous three titles.
@Jacob Barbee little variation?!?!?! They changed a lot of stuff from god 3
Because cliff B was not involve in development of judgment.
I really want to buy this as I love gears. Is it worth it for the story? I never cared for gears mp.
I don't think we're getting anywhere with this back and forth. You have your opinion, I have mine. I can live with that.
