Lithium Trolling Motor Batteries Worth it? Lithium Review

- I recently upgraded to a 24V 50ah lithium battery. This is my review of that upgrade.
I did a preivious video with a little more information on lithium batteries in it here's a link to that video
• Lithium Trolling Motor... - กีฬา
Glad to see you are getting a bunch of fishing in this season. Looking good, brother!
When we gonna hit the Lake!?!?!
Thanks ! Great test I will be getting lithium batteries ❤
I'm glad you found this helpful, I have continued to have good luck with them.
This was a very helpful video. Yeah, my lead acid batteries would have been dead as door nails!
Glad you liked it! I am a true believer in Lithium.
I installed 2 x 100AH Ionic batteries in my 2022 Lund 1875 Impact. I run a 24 V MinnKota Ulterra. I am so impressed by this technology that I am installing another 12 v 100 AH battery solely to run my graphs (A Humminbird Solix 12 and a Helix 10).
The Ionic Battery has bluetooth that tells you the actual amount of charge left, so getting surprised does not happen.
Soendy ? Yep. Worth every dime tho.
I will be doing the same as far as getting a dedicated battery for my graphs. I am hoping to add another Helix this spring. I was unaware of the bluetooth features available I am definitely going to look into Ionic Batteries.
Thanks for the heads up.
I pull solar panels on floats behind the boat.
I bought two 100AH LFP batteries, connected them in series, and realized I could probably fish 5 or 6 full days between charging, but I don't use my trolling motor a ton while fishing. I actually used those for a different project and built a dedicated 50AH, 24v battery, from component parts. Only cost about $300, at the time.
Are you running an on board charger?
@@winnesotafishing - Yeah, the Noco Genius is what I started with and now I'm using a Victron.
@@jasonbroom7147 Awesome! Thank you, that is the next thing I need to upgrade.
Lithium for the win
Hi. What specific trolling model are you using? I am getting ready to upgrade and your video has given me much info I wanted. Thanks.
I have a Minnkota Ulterra 80lbs thrust 24V trolling motor. Love it!
Good to know I plan on doing a 100amp hour 24v battery
A friend of mine went with the 100Ah battery and loves it! you will be super happy with it.
This is a similar setup to what I want to run in my boat. Do you have this set up to your fusebox? Or do you just have a 60 amp minn kota circuit breaker? Just trying to figure out how to set it up. Thanks man!
I just have the 60 amp circuit breaker. Seemed like the simplest way of doing it.
G’day. It’s been 9 months since you last posted this video. does the batterie still hold up the same as it did when you made this video?
So far so good.... I have my boat prepped and ready to go but haven't gotten it on the water.... Next time I go on a several day trip I will put it to the test again.
@@winnesotafishing yeah nice one good stuff 👍🏻 cheers for the reply 🤙🏻
great review! I have the same trolling motor and everyone says get 100ah but this video proves 50ah would be enough for my purposes.
I am always a fan of more and longer lasting power but the 50ah battery has done better then I would have ever expected.
So this must be an older Dakota 24v 50Ah? I see they have now have a 24v 60Ah on their website.
You are correct. They no longer make the 50Ah battery.
Can you use the normal dakota lithium charger with 24v50ah lithium ion battery?
I don't want to steer you in the wrong direction, but I think you should be able to. If it is a charger designed to charge a lead acid battery it may end up not fully charging a lithium battery but keep in mind I am no expert.
So the 50AH on the 24v trolling motor battery was enough to last a couple days of hard fishing without any charging ? I am new to using electric trolling motors and I just got a 24v 80lb minn kota that I need a battery for.
It was in this particular case. Obviously how you are fishing and weather play a huge role. Also I only have a 16.5' boat that is pretty light so doesn't require as much power to control. The difference between a regular lead acid battery and a lithium battery is huge. I would recommend lithium to anyone thinking about making the switch.
@@winnesotafishing My boat is only 16' and less than 1,000 dry weight. My plan is to fish very similar to the way you were in this video. Thank you for the reply
@@MikeTanner3210 No problem. Thanks for watching!
Hello mike. I have a 24v 80 lbs 60” terrova motor. My boat is 16.5 ft and weighs 1000 kg. What kind of solar panel and battery do you recommend I use?
@@MikeTanner3210You can PROBABLY use something like Victron's smart shunt (or similar) to monitor how much power you've used...and other statistics. I'm a 12v guy, so you gotta make sure that whatever you buy is compatible.
So is there any method of determining how much run time is remaining in the battery? How much charge is left?
There are additional gauges that you can buy that will give you a reading on how much power is left in your battery but I haven't made the investment in anything yet.
@@winnesotafishing I just checked Dakota and - wow - the smart battery monitor is 200 bucks.
@@KarlBAndersen Yeah, little more than I would like to pay. With the size of my boat and the style of fishing I do if I charge it after a day I rarely run out of power.
So if your fishing all day have you found the need to charge it every night. What kind of charger. Thanks
@@JamesWhite-tg4kw Out of habit I do charge it at night if I fished all day. I am not sure that I would need to though. I have a Dakota lithium charger that came with the battery. You can use a conventional charger but they won't fully charge your lithium battery. They will only get it to about 80%
LiFePO4 is the best thing since microwave ovens.
Not really, they won’t start a gas motor.
@@jackson4861 starts mine.
Are lithium safe?
Safe how? I know when they first started putting them in cell phones there were some issues but I don't know of any issues with boat batteries. Not saying there haven't been any but I am not aware of any.
Actually the Lithium-Ion batteries are the ones that are catching fire. The Lifepo4 have a safe track record.
No one carries lithium batteries in stock you have to order them online plus they don’t have dual function in a single battery like lead acid’s. Hard pass
You can find them at Cabelas and Bass Pro shops.
Disaster waiting to happen
Why would you say that? Lithium does everything better.
I'm interested in knowing also
If you are refering to fire, thats the lithium ion battery. these lifepo4 batteries are very safe and have no fire issues even when punctured or crushed apparently.
@@kjm2199 I stand corrected
@@CreepyCharlieI wouldn't say EVERYTHING. I'm a lithium guy, but I still choose a single lead acid to run the winch on my trailer. Pulling hundreds of amps from a single lithium battery is GENERALLY unfeasible.
Yes
City boy, probably a Democrat too. Or a liberal 🙄. Probably watches CNN all day long and drives a prius. Really pisses me off these woke fools trying to ruin the sport of fishing
I don't get it, are you referring to me or something else?
@@winnesotafishing yes! You probably went to the Britney Griner homecoming in your prius and went to the voting polls and voted Democrat all the way down the board
Anyone as confused as I am?
@chevy16001 all democrats are confused. Your probably a rich man from North of Richmond ain't ya boy
I'm just not sure what in this video was political in any manner...lol
