Trolling motor with a tiny lithium battery Can I troll with only 30AH?

  • In this video we take a 30AH lithium battery and test it with my trolling motor. How long can I run my trolling motor and how far can I go with this tiny lithium batter, and will I catch anything?

    Good video, very concise.
I have a 13' tandem kayak and 2 trolling motors; 14 lb. and 50 lb. I have used a group 24 AGM, a 24 AH LiFePo4 and a 35 AH AGM. Both motors run at about the same speed, 2.3 mph, although the 50 lb. quickly reaches that speed and does better against a headwind. The seller of the LiFePo4 battery said it was too small for the 50 lb. and I should use a bigger battery or add another LiFePo4 of the same rating, in parallel.
I was thinking I could run the 50 lb. motor off the 35 AH AGM. The group 24 AGM doesn't care because it quite large. But it's very heavy, half the weight of the boat, making it difficult to drag up steep banks. The LiFePo4 ran either motor, but I never tried to run it down, just used it to get around this small lake near me. I used the 35 AH AGM only on the 14 lb.
I think maybe I damaged the LiFePo4 by running the 50 lb. motor off of it. The battery was working when I put it away, fully charged. I went to use it again about 3 months later and it was only 8 volts. As soon as I put it on any charger it immediately showed green/full. I put an incandescent bulb across the terminals and it lit, pulling down the voltage, yet the charger still showed full.
Question - Can I use less than a 50 AH (LiFePo4 or AGM) on the 50 lb. motor?
Question - Did running the 50 lb. with the 24 AH LiFePo4 damage the battery?

It sounds like the BMS in the battery went bad. The limmiting factor for the battery is the amp draw from the motor. A 50lb motor will draw somewhere near 30amps at full speed. Check the specs on the battery and try to stay 20% below max amps. But my advice is to buy a 100 Ahr lithium. I like the 100 mini from LiTime....its perfect for a kayak and will run the motor for many hours.

Yes, great Info... I wanted to know about a cheap Li Battery for my Kayak and a 40lb thrust trolling motor. I think I'm sold.

Some great info. For the ponds I fish that would probably work great but would probably get a second just to make sure I could get back in without having to paddle.

Heck yea, perfect for a kayak or small lake. 4 NM is pretty reasonable distance.

Great , super-informative video, as always. I was looking at this same battery for my inflatable ka/boat. Looks perfect.

If you where trolling with 2 speed setting you should get about 4 hours? Did the engine have maximizer you should get about 5-6h

BTW, have you ever made a lure that has the kind of tail that's on a Garland Slab Hunt'r ?? I am curious to see how this tail design would work on larger lures.

No boat, don't need to troll, but will let this run for the logarithm.

Good video. For that price you can get two and hook up in parallel.

Franko I know this has nothing to do with this video but could you please share your recipe for your mid coat using the mimwax polyurethane? It would be greatly appreciated.

Leisure suits are powered by the reflected light from disco balls....everyone knows that.

Im not really impressed, i actually thought it would last longer.. my buddy with basically the same setup says he trolls all day on half a charge.. is it because hes in a kayak or is he full of it. Im wanting to do this set-up to n a kayak but want longer run times.

    • @EngineeredAngler
      @EngineeredAngler  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

If you assume that trolling all day means the motor is running all day that would be pretty amazing. Running 8 hours means you can only pull 3.75 amps. I suppose that's possible with a very light kayak and a very small motor set at a low speed.

Ask him if you can borrow his setup for the day to test the results with your kayak before investing in anything.

I have a newport 46# thrust. Lead acid deep cycle battery, class 29 115Ah and weighs over 65#. On the 16' row boats with 3 people and gear? 2 1/2 hours maybe 3 on speed 3 though used speed 5 . got home and used 60% of the battery. (no damage) Same set up on my Wilderness systems Tarpon 120 (1999-2000 model) and it'll go 4+ hours on mostly speed 3 (sometimes 5 to keep up with friends as I tore my bicep and paddling hurts too much anymore). On the "wavewalk" which is a 10' kayak,catamaran,canoe... the wind affects that boat much more as it's tall and it will go with 2 people for 3+ hours at speed 3-4. that's 100# of motor and battery and two people weighing in at 300# totel...plus the 27# dog actually. Last year I bought a 100Ah lithium ion battery that weighs in at 23 pounds and I can literally double those times now. I'd say a 50Ah would be good for MOST people.. 100 for me as I'm gone all day now

@@bullyakker thank you for the input, if I can get 4 hrs I'll be ok. I only really need it to get out to the fishing grounds, then I can paddle around, fish , then power up for the trip back.
