  • The PERFECT Arcade Stick Lever Build! My Quest for the Ideal Lever and My Philosophy on Lever Review. Today, I review a custom lever arcade stick build that I have finally honed in on and built after 5 years of constant searching and modding. I also have instructions on how to make this build. I definitely think this is the strongest all-around arcade stick build I have ever used and I am fully satisfied. This is a Korean Stick, but for the Japanese stick players, I still think the philosophies I go over in this video still apply.

    Hey there got sent this vid alittle while ago but they are some things I'd like to mention.
    You recommend the Taeyoung Fanta but show the Myoungshin Fanta which are two different models, myoungshin is from IST and Taeyoung is fro ETOKKI. Taeyoung comes with a more tension grommet and flippable actuator (14.7-15.3i think forgot) compared to the myoungshin where it already has a switch plate you recommended and a lighter grommet. Short collars typically have shorter throws like 309, alpha series and even the low collar taeyoung have a hair less than the full collar. I could go into more but I figure I wanted to address the obvious with "100hours" research lol, we all human though I get it.....also the fujin and cool bear have a switch pate too.
    Hope all is all
    Tekken players (not all ofcourse) do play with high tension levers but have the A2s for low actuation or if they were lucky with Pansonic AM5s.

      I know the difference between the two levers, it was just an honest mistake where I clicked the wrong link in the shop when making the video. I 've updated the link in the description. I figured I'd get some push back from other arcade stick enthusiasts, but I really have spent years working on this and I stand by my conclusions in the vid.

      oo i did buy a stick from etooki i like it alot. did have a hori RAP4 but it was not for me. so did some looking and so on and ended up buying as my 2nd stick i like it alot. helped me in tekken and street fighter where my inputs are cleaner now and i dont hold them like i did when i used a pad and mixbox/keyboard. the hori was to light and it was to easiy to go to high so a you get uf aswell when you only wanted a qcf. but its hard to know what is good and what is not. the best thing is sto test but that can be hard. and pay alot of money on a stick you may or may not like yea...
      so are there alot of diffrence in the other korean sticks? i have watched a few on youtube and it seems to be some but not to big... sounds more like entry/beginner level or starting of point but the "Taeyoung Fanta" is like the real thing-

    About 5 years ago I bought a OG Razer Panthera, to play SFV and Tekken 7. I didn't get used to it, so I kept the arcade stick in its cardboard box and kept using the pad for everything. Last year I resumed the use of the arcade stick applying the recommendations in your guides on how to play with them. All those videos helped me a lot, thanks for that, I made a lot of progress.
    After that, I decided to try some Korean lever and based on a lot of research and the recommendations you gave, I chose the famous Taeyoung Fanta Lever. I also bought a Brook Universal Fighting Board, and an aluminum control panel adapted for the razer panthera and that allows a perfect fit with the collar of a Korean lever.
    I had no trouble modding the arcade stick. The only problem I faced was to remove the parts that I was not going to use anymore, such as the plexiglass, which is firmly glued to the control panel of the razer panthera and the PCB, which had silicone gum in the cable joints, to prevent it from being removed, It was a real pain in the ass to remove all of that. Also, I had to remove a part that acts as a box inside the razer, because it collided with the body of the lever. After that, everything fell into place perfectly.
    It took a few days to get used to the new lever, but after a few months playing with it, I don't think I will ever use a Sanwa lever again. I wanted to know if I was going to like these Korean levers before going for a more specific set up. So in the coming months, I'll bet on your perfect build :D.
    Thanks for sharing this knowledge with the community, it is very illustrative, structured and easy to follow.

    The "easiest" and most expensive way to find your perfect lever is to try them all. Being able to deduce your preference makes it so much easier. Not really feasible and does become a rabbit hole ESPECIALLY with Korean levers with masspro, boutique and custom ones being part of the equation.
    Makes me appreciate the simplicity of tuning a JLF or Seimitsu but a Korean lever just has a level of granularity that makes it super interesting since the mix and matching of parts makes them feel more unique between different people.
    I like the IST Alpha 49S as a starter lever. Very customizable and has a lot of cross compatible parts unlike Crown where you're locked into their ecosystem so to speak.

    The secret are the micro switches
    The old Panasonic AM5 switches made all the difference in the world for me
    Seimitsu levers were never the same after going omron
    My perfect stick
    OTTO V5 with 2# actuator
    AM5 Panasonic switches
    Feels like a good in between a Hayabusa and an LS-32 both old versions used the AM5 Switches
    This is my all purpose build for fighters and shmups
    Still prefer old LS-32 for shmups 😁

    I have a Konami Hyperstick. It came stock with a Seimitsu LS-56. The cool thing about it though is that the shaft is shorter than your traditional LS-56 and it comes with it's own dust cover as well which adds a lot to the overall feel. I don't have to worry about the mounting plate either, which is nice and gives it a more durable feel in my opinion. I ordered the Seimitsu LS-56 from Arcade Shock that came with custom springs. What I did was swap the shafts, added a two pound spring, octogate, and a bat top for extra leverage. It is buttery smooth, but this is just my opinion.

    I really enjoy your videos and this video in particular, along with your guide on how to hold an arcade stick lever, made me decide to try out a Korean lever. This was furthur solidifed after trying to use my Sanwa JLF without a gate and finding it much easier to do double QCF motions on the left side of the screen. I plan on getting the Crown 309 MJ and that comes with a silicone rubber grommet with a 35A, which is considered medium. You can choose to pair the order with other grommets. The grommets in the low/light section are listed as 20A and 25A. The one you recomended on the golden lever website is a silicone grommet with a rating that says 40A, which is considred light. I later learned that the base tension for the grommet is higher on levers without springs like the Taeyoung and the base tension is lower on levers with springs like the Crown 309 MJ. This could play a factor in how the tension is rated across the levers and grommets. Are all tension grommets rated with the same scaling? What would be the closest tension grommet for me to purchase? One guy in the comment section of Alex Nostaljix's first Korean Lever Round Up said that if you don't use at least a 35A grommett on the Crown 309 MJ that you will get a second input if you hold the stick in one direction and let go of it. All I want is for the stick to be as light as possible so that I can input commands quickly without making my wrist feel uncomfortable, but heavy enough so that it can return to neutral quickly and not get misinputs, just like you said in your video. For reference I plan on playing mainly Guilty Gear with this lever.

    • @TheElectricUnderground
      @TheElectricUnderground  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh easy answer!!!! Definitely go with the clear lower tension gromet, that s the winner :-) (I have this lever as well)

      @@TheElectricUnderground Thank you for your reply, I really appreciate it. I've actually made up my mind and I'm planning on buying a Seimitsu lever. I'm stuck between the LS-32 and the LS-40. I want a lever with a shorter throw than the Sanwa JLF that makes diagonal inputs smoother. I've heard that the LS-40 has a shorter throw than the LS-32 and that the LS-32 has a stiffer spring than the LS-40. People say that the LS-40 in terms of tension feels like it's between the Sanwa JLF and the LS-32. I don't want the lever to have too much tension when I'm doing inputs so that I don't have to put a lot of force to get out my inputs so my wrist doesn't hurt. For reference I used the 2 lb spring on my Hori Hayabusa and it felt fine for me but when I put the 2 lb spring on the Sanwa JLF it felt way too stiff and my wrist was starting to hurt by doing motions like the IAD. Also I've heard that the shaft is shorter for Seimitsu levers, although I heard one person say that the shaft for the LS-40 is similar to the Sanwa JLF, but I can't confirm or deny this. Before I was planning on buying a whole new lever entirely I was just planning on getting a bat top for my Sanwa because I felt that my fingers weren't completely on the ball top. I was using the stick like you described in your video on how to hold a lever and when I do certain motions my index finger isn't on the ball top which gives me less leverage. I find myself constantly have to readjust my fingers so that my index finger can touch the ball top. I tried to overcome this by moving my index finger down forcefully to do motions like a double qcf on the left side of the screen but this just makes the motion slower to put out. If I use just my middle and ring finger to do the motion it isn't as precise and I wind up putting in too many motions for the input to come out. I was planning on playing with a bat top regardless of whether I kept playing on my Sanwa or if I bought a Korean or Seimitsu lever. I don't know what kind of Seimitsu lever you have or if you have both the LS-32 and the LS-40, but if the shaft is shorter on both of them and you're using the bat top, will it at least be taller than the Sanwa with a ball top? I believe it will be, but I just want to make sure it's tall enough so that I can reach it with my index finger when I'm playing on both sides. People say that the LS-40 is more suited for fighting games, while the LS32 is more suited for shmups. I've heard some people say that if you push the lever for the LS-32 too far against the gate that it moves the lever pops up out if the gate a little, which can feel awkward. I've heard that with the 2017 model, which is the new model that is standard that this issue is less apparent, but it's still there. Has that been true for you and if so does it bother you? I've heard that the LS-40 doesn't have this issue at all. I plan on using the lever mostly for fighting games, but I also plan on playing it occasionally with shmups like Metal Slug and others. If it's possible can you give get me your thoughts on both of the levers so that you can help me decide which one's right for me?

    JLF’s are so soft and mushy, I thought I would lean more towards “stiffer” grommets in my favoured Korean levers (red, black or blue?). I soon found out my hand started to fatigue after a few minutes playing shmups with those and dropped right back to the yellow 30 or white 25 shore grommet at the very “softer” end of the scale lol. This is definitely what I prefer, paired with the soft Omron A5 switches. I’ve since found an even better combination pairing a Fujin III with Gersung V1623A3 switches a “violet 32 shore” grommet, and the stock MYOUNGSHIN Fanta shaft, core and 15.5mm actuator - replacing the frosty battop combo in the Fujin III - even though they were better quality lol. The reinforced switch plate on the bottom of the Fujin has a similar effect you mentioned in the golden lever parts and I think I’ve ended up with a poor mans golden lever! Lol The Fanta actuator “rests” on the A3 switch hinges, with a nice short throw which is sensitive but responsive providing the perfect tension for my tastes specifically 2D games..😊

    @The Electric Underground Thank you for your reply. I have some questions related to this video. You said that you should aim for a lever with a smaller throw, but you recommended the Taeyoung Fanta as the main body, which is known for having a long throw. Why didn't you recommend the 309MJ as the main body, which is known for having a small throw for a Korean lever? Can you clarify about that? Also, how would a Crown 309MJ with a DX Bobbin (the DX Bobbin reduces wobble and increases the tension slightly) and 25a grommet compare to your customized lever? How does the throw and corners compare between the two? I hear that corners are more difficult to activate on Korean levers compared to Japanese levers, so I want to hear your thoughts about the corners on the 309mj and your own customized lever. I like the unique feeling that the grommet provides, I just want it at a lighter tension. I want my lever to meet your criteria as much as possible, as those are the same criteria that I look for in a lever. I would be really grateful if you answered my questions.

    Hey man, I watched this video a while back and ordered the tae fanta thinking stick to the fanta by itself for a few weeks and months than order these parts later, i've had the fanta for a month now but i'm having some doubts about the parts you recommend in this video. For ex the point you make of hitting the gate that you want to activate just before you hit the gate/collar, I want a stick that does that too, I hate when I hit ff, only to get f because the stick didn't return to neutral because the switch was still activated while I inputed another forward. But you recommend a 16mm actuator with 9mm shaft. The tae fanta stock has a 15.5mm actuator and 9mm shaft and I can tell you that there's a lot of deadthrow with this stock setup, and recommending a 16mm actuator would make this even worse! Unless you did something to reduce the throw by modifying the collar? but you didn't seem to do that? I use the flipped actuator with tae fanta, where the flipped side is 15mm and it's very close to the stick you describe in this video. Not hating, just trying to understand how this setup works for you since the parts you recommend don't seem to match properties of the stick you describe. Thanks!

    Great breakdown. I see alot of work and tweaking went into getting this set up just right. Its interesting to see a korean stick used for shooters as I mostly read about them being used for Tekken. It seems these sticks are a little more rigid like the american sticks and have a strong tendancy to return to neutral. That would definately be something different. I might have to try this build in the future. The Seimitsu 62 that I put in felt like a huge improvement over the hayabusa stick I was using , for shooters, so its hard to say if this will give me an edge over that. Really wont know until I try it out. Appreciate the video.

    What is the function of the collar on a Korean lever? I see some levers are sold with high/low/no collar variants and I wonder how they differ (aside from the ease of retrofitting into a commercial fightstick).

    • @TheElectricUnderground
      @TheElectricUnderground  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question! So the collar is the physical gate that stops your stick from over throwing. I am personally a fan of the tall collar for better stability, but the issue people run into is that you need to widen the hole of your arcade stick to mount it. The lower collar is a little less stable (has more throw) but can be mounted without widening the hole

      Yeah two things, while I still use the 16mm actuator for basically everything, you might want to include a 15mm actuator as well if you want a little more wiggle room for Tekken backdashes. Also if you don t want to solder your microswitch wires (I forgot most people don t do this), you might want to throw in a quick connector from focus attack. Other than that I have been using this build for hundreds of hours now and I still think it s perfect :-) also I recently got a Guwange 1cc live on this bad boy! th-cam.com/video/Cum-l5QHDqg/w-d-xo.html

    I made a comment on this video 9 months ago asking you for advice regarding the 309mj. I have finally bought the lever. The lever comes with a 35a tension which I find a bit too heavy for me when doing movements that require the use of my thumb, mainly up inputs. I am now planning on buying 25a and 30a grommets to see how they feel. My main concern is that the 25a grommet, the one you recommended to me, will be too light and hit another direction when returning to neutral. Can you confirm if that's true? And I'm talking about when you push the stick as far as you can and letting go.

    • @TheElectricUnderground
      @TheElectricUnderground  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can confirm that it does not :-) if that s a concern I would actually say go with a slightly smaller actuator rather than a heavier gromet :-) I still use the lightest grommet and I doubt it will ever increase the resistance on it. Try getting a size smaller actuator to go with the lighter grommet just in case :-)

    • @seansilva7915
      @seansilva7915 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheElectricUnderground Thank you for your reply.

    They don't sell that switch plate combination anymore and the base portion that they do offer is not compatible with the Taeyoung. I was able to use an original Korean version Bit Bang Shuriken in it's place. It probably doesn't do as good of a job, but it does have an aluminum core so it is probably better than nothing. Damn near built for Shmups imo. It works with fighting games well enough but I find it cumbersome over a Otto V5.
      K Levers have way more variably to consider to be good for shmups (Brand, short or high collar, actuator size, bobbin stiffness, grommet tension, shaft and microswitches all make a massive difference in sensitivity, deadzones and throw distance). Mark here probably a good chunk of change messing around to get the right feel and that's not viable for many people because of how expensive it can be.
