  • We will use Cinema 4D's Timeline feature to bake our alembic animation to PLA so that we can transfer the selection sets from the obj over to our animation. Its very easy to do. ENJOY! Please ensure you are at least using Cinema 4D R18 or later, i encountered errors with earlier versions (R16) when using the timeline feature in Cinema 4D.

    THE EASIEST METHOD AS MENTIONED BELOW BY MITCHELL AND IT WORKS REALLY WELL! "Just make the alembic editable by tapping C. Then you can copy over the selection sets."
    Thank you siMM V. for mentioning these techniques. If you watched this tutorial th-cam.com/video/tB6Iki3Sn3I/w-d-xo.html you no longer need Riptide, use Cinema 4D's tools to do this directly. Please ensure you are at least using Cinema 4D R18 or later, i encountered errors with earlier versions (R16) when using the timeline feature in Cinema 4D.

    Had my hopes up so high after watching this, thank you.. BUT - weirdly, when I move the selection tags over to the Alembic copy, the selections now point to totally different polys?! For example, a tag that was on a zip, once moved to the alembic copy, ended up on a pocket edge...
    UPDATE! It was me, human error.. I exported the OBJ as thin, and the Alembic as thick! Leaving this here in case it helps anyone else. Thank you again!

    Even easier: Just make the alembic editable by tapping C. Then you can copy over the selection sets.

    Thank you again! You are a lifesaver with these tutorials, it's so hard to find info on these common things when using C4D and MD. For some reason, I can't get this to work in C4D. The selections never transfer over, also when I bake the animation to PLA it generates a Locked UV instead of the Alembic Morph tag. Maybe I'm working on a different version or something. Just whenever I bake the animation and try to transfer the selections, the selections are lost.

    • @papapetebreen
      @papapetebreen 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      OK wow, I finally got it working after two days of going absolutely insane trying to figure this out. Same issue as someone else below: make sure you export both the Alembic file AND the OBJ in the same thickness with the same unified UV option ticked. This tutorial is incredible, keep it up

      @@papapetebreen Which version are you using?
      I'm on R23 and the polygroups are not totally messy but they are not correct. Also, I cannot drag the alembic to timeline to bake the PLA, I can only "current state to object".
      You export it has thin or thick? Actually, have you tried both? It works?
      *Restarted C4D, and now I can drag the alembic to the timeline to bake it with PLA active but still doesnt work.

    Alternatively you can make alembic editable then add a point cache tag calculation, this avoids having keyframes everywhere. this might help with older versions of c4d. but havent tested it out yet.

    I export the garment has a HDF5 alembic as well as OBJ (or fbx) with unified UV's and I get some polygroups correct (like the buttons) but topstiches and the rest of garments come mixed (ex back part of pants with the shirt).
    Which versions are you using Travis?

    Is it possible to 'bake' textures into marvellous designer garments???
    My textures are specific to each pattern piece they don't repeat or tile. When I follow the process in this video I can't then open it in cinema 4d without it needing to be manually remapped

    is there a way to use multiple separated alembics for each texture ? maybe it would free the memory as C4d streams alembics from hard disks and not in memory (as far as I know)

    • @TravisDavids
      @TravisDavids  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're using a Daz character as well they automatically have selection sets for different parts of the body like face, torso, legs, arms etc. Just reimport the obj or fbx version of the Daz character and you're good to go. Don't export the avatar from MD.

    Hey Travis, Thank you for you awesome tutorials! got a question, is there any way to use dynamic objects in MD for interacting with cloth? like a trash bag full of objects(like spheres) fall on the ground. i tried to do it in C4D with Combination of soft bodies and rigid bodies but softbodies are so limited in C4D for simulating cloth, and i dont see any good alternative ways

    exported alemebic from marvelous designer 9 cant be importetd to c4d: was running into importing problems via c4d. turns out if you export ogawa from marvelous - you can import it to blender, export it again to c4d and continue with travis workflow.

    When I open the render view (I am using Redshift) my clothes are super pixelated. I have tried different render settings and higher the samples of my materials, but nothing works. • @artkiko4460

      if you imported your character (with animation already) into MD, then open that same file in Cinema. you then need to export an allembic file (of the garment only) from MD and merge it into the Cinema file. let me know if this works.

    ok new problem! Using a patterned material for a jacket, and having to use cubic projection, as UVW is seriously messed up ( mesh issue? UV from MD issue? ). So the cubic projection looks fine static, but as soon as I render out the animation, the material pattern starts to slide, as if its using camera projection! Tried everything I can think of, can anyone help me?! Its for a job so urgent.. Thanks!

    • @diogomeireles3018
      @diogomeireles3018 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you have a logo in the garment on Marvelous Designer that's a UV problem. Do the same thing, export the alembic and the obj to get the poly selection groups. When you do this, the UV's are exported with the obj. If the UV's look weird, go to the UV editor in Marvelous, is quite easy to use.
      There is also a work-around, you can place your logo has a decal, I donno which render engine you are using but you will find a lot of solutions here in YT,
