The unit itself can only pick up sound where it is mounted, so an external mic allows you to route the mic in a separate place, whether you want less wind noise, more engine noise, or a running narrative as you record. -CK
The sound is ok, but not much to speak of unless you are using the external microphone. Image quality is excellent, and low light performance varies based on which frame-rate setting you are using. -CK
Thank you for the feedback. While it may be tough for any HD camera to compete with the GoPro these days, I think Drift did an excellent job in highlighting features you don't find on the GoPro. ~Ali
Both of these cameras are surprisingly resilient, but I think the casing of the GoPro gives it the upper hand. I'm not sure if the video was a hoax or not, but there was definitely one floating out there where a skydiver dropped his GoPro and it survived the fall! Crazy stuff. -CK
Thank you for the great feedback. I would agree that the GoPro and the Drift stand alone on their own merits. The Ghost HD has some great features that make it very user friendly. The GoPro is the juggernaut of HD cameras right now and tough to beat, but the Ghost definitely is a contender. ~Ali
what ext mic dose it use, I have a Replay 1080 and that needs a powered condenser mike, having a mic battery pack in your helmet is a bit uncomfortable
Hi antony youre saying that no other cam have a screen on witch you can se live fotage but i have try´d the VIO POV.HD who olso have the screen just so you can try see if it it some
3M Dual lock tape is 5 times stronger than velcro, you can also get a clear one also. however i dont think the ghost actually comes with velcro on their mounts in the package.
I tilt my helmet to the angle it is when I ride and kinda eyeball it. With the viewing angle of the camera, I haven't missed anything. Worked for me the past 4 years.
Seeing how the velcro failed for that skydiver, will the velcro on a helmet while riding stay efficient? Or do you recommend some other method? ALSO, in regard to riding with it on your helmet, do you think that the drift ghost or the go pro black is the superior camera overall?
I use a standard mic (not Drift) mounted in my helmet. I also have my camera connected to a USB power outlet on my bike so I can film forever without any issues, battery in the remote dies first, that is after approx 8-10h, this together with TAG-Film makes sure I don't miss any cool moment and I don't get hour's to edit. (Again) look in my channel on when I fall with my GS and how it records all communication on the Scala's as well...
I agree, I tried them both and the go pro has the ghost slightly beaten for quality. but for pure vlogging , with its simple one fixing point opposed to having to use arms and such for the go pro, the ghost is the better.
Hey HaleTruman - We're sorry to hear you found your new Drift Ghost camera to be less than what you expected. When you tested it, were you in full daylight? When we did our internal testing, we found the screen to be very useful and plenty bright in full day light. ~Ali
The only thing I like about this camera is the lens on a "narrow" end. I only shoot in 2.7k as well. I have noticed if you shoot something in 1080 your final rendering is not 1080, it is more like 720. Also by shooting in 2.7k you can easily zoom in 4X and not lose a lot of resolution unless it is dark out.
Good video just like all your video's. I have just received my ghost and loving it but for one thing and that is the miocrophone. What external microphone would you recommend besides the drift.
I purchased a drift 720 some time ago and it stopped working. I replaced the button cell battery in the remote to find that it did nothing at all. I contacted Drift and they told me that the item is obsolete. A poor show where it comes to support for the units. I would imagine that this must be the same for every unit once the battery goes??? Drift, then move on to creating the next action Cam. Well, I for one would not buy another. If the support is that poor I would rather use some photosensitive film in a cardboard box and pull the lid off very quickly in order to catch the action than buy another Drift camera which will eventually become obsolete and have no support. There are plenty of companies who support their equipment, obsolete or not. :(((
So far I am using it on my Drone and am quite happy with his Photo Camera, however when recording video using the app it doesn't give you the opportunity to view what it is recording at that point in time (useless to use as a FPV camera). It blanks the screen with a RECORDING text. unless I'm doing something wrong of course?I don't know?
I bought 4 Drift Ghost, one Ghost X and three ghost XL, all four had the same problem, the display stops working, all writing disappears and the display is colored and the wifi stops working. In short, there is no way to configure the camera anymore. Make no mistake, if it gets rain it will spoil!
You can use WiFi and look at what you capture on you phone =) When you have it aligned I recommend to mark how it is mounted so you easy can mount it again... Latest films in my channel is filmed with Drift HD Ghost... It is the best camera as you don't need to look like a GoPro - Telitubie =)
I have used Ghost for about a year and now I think about buying Stealth. I've read it's smaller and lighter so it seems to be better for an action camera mounted on a helmet. Am I right?
Yeah man! I use mine for snowboarding all the time! It works amazing, even better than a gopro aha. Its also compatible with the camera pole mounts and it works well with it! Trust me its definitely worth it!
I own the Hero 2 and just purchased the Ghost HD and I'm very happy with both of them. The gopro is an excellent cam however the phone app n wrist remote for the Ghost is a nice touch. Many times I've wonder with my gopro if I'm on Rec mode. The remote eliminates the guessing game. I recommend them both.
It gets frequent card writing issues and it freezes. Still getting the problem, even after using a micro SD card that follows specifically to what is recommended but the manufacturer CSO. Had it replace to the current model and still the same problem. 👎🏻
It's been discontinued and replaced by the Ghost 4K Camera, which is priced below. -DrewZilla *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/drift-ghost-4k-action-camera
does this drift have a external microphone port? www.amazon.com/Drift-Definition-Helmet-Action-Camera/dp/B005H2RDK6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1411625035&sr=8-1&keywords=drift+HD
How is the low light sensitivity on the drift? And would it survive this? th-cam.com/video/Zjx_0XbQ07U/w-d-xo.html If this camera was in a water proof case it would have survried.
I think GoPro has the better anti-everything invincible case going on, but the Drift camera is pretty tough on its own. Low light wasn't a problem for me when using at the Dragon last year. There is a night mode as well for truly dark recording. -CK
The Drift company has absolutely the worst customer service I have ever experienced. They take months and months to take care of any problems. And they take months to reply to emails. I have had two defective cameras from them and it has taken a year to get any satisfaction and I continue to have one defective camera now. 2020 May.
Speakers and Screen are waist of space the brightness of the screen is probably useless on most days and speakers are probably .05$ from chin with poor quality, also less battery life

You like? Trying something new this year, glad to hear it is working! -CK
We do ship to Australia, but free shipping only applies to orders with a US address. -CK
Not sure what you are asking here. What would be the purpose of syncing two video cameras? -CK

Thx. Too bad you didn't show how it mounts to a motorcycle helmet. That would have been nice.
Sorry, we haven't really experimented much with external microphones other than the one Drift makes. Anyone else have experience here?

I'm looking to upgrade to this camera soon. Currently I have the Drift 1080p but I'm planning on getting this one. I think it's an awesome upgrade!
Drift has their own external mic pack accessory, which is not a powered mic. -CK
Hey Bob, the Drift attached via 3M tape mount. Peel and stick magic. -CK
How do you check your camera alignment when the screen is strapped to the side of your head?

Thanks for Review.... any updated version of this?? as this is 2 yr old vid.
If I get this from the websit what comes in the box?
All the mounts?
Got it. Yea, Drift does not have this capability. However, It wouldn't take much work to match up the feeds in editing after the fact. -CK

+jayesh soni this is the most up to date review we have. -DrewZilla
Its kind of our job to make these videos! However, if you mean paid by the manufacturer, then no, he was not. -CK
Ha! That'd be a great one to win. I used this on a recent trip to the Tail of The Dragon and was not disappointed. -CK
Very carefully ...

I know this is an old comment but just in case you haven't bought yet just be aware the stealth has no external mic input
i have one of these keeps doubling the video that it records and some times i can not play the video had it three week so far not too impressed
Is this good for recurring snowboarding
jake02cute It is meant for action sports like snowboarding. -Hi-Viz Brian

Better than having to use your phone for settings. It has a screen and speakers and it gives you 3 hours? More than enough time to record. Sounds good
You know, you could have just taken our word for it ;) ~Ali

Geesh, the jello is horrendous in the fairing mounted video. I'm sure Drift flipped you guys off for showing that garbage.
