- There's a lot of differences between the two versions of the Cozmic collection, including the price. Which one is the better deal though???

If you play Darius on a 40-inch flat panel TV, it's the same size as the arcade original. The original arcade machine used three 13-inch CRT's connected together. If you do the math that's about the same as you get with a 40-inch HDTV.
That's just how I play The Ninja Warriors on PS4 - same Taito 3 screen originally - using a 42" 1080p Plasma in HDMI - it looks and plays awesome especially with the in-software scan lines on and sound pumping throu my 2.1 theatre sound system - topped off controlled with a Hori Mini Fighting Stick :D

Now that the digital release is out for Darius Cozmic Collection and that Taito has announced Darius Cozmic Revelation, I searched up to see if anyone was covering the news of this game on TH-cam in English. Nobody's done it yet, but in the process, I found this channel! Seeming as you have done a bunch of videos on the collection, I figure you're quite the Darius fan, and I'm always up for more SHMUP/STG content in general. I want to pitch in my thoughts for this video, too, since it's more relevant now that the west is no longer limited to the SLG release.
I feel like both versions have their merits, at least to a fan of the Darius franchise - AC holds the titles we all know and enjoy, with Gaiden in particular being a big selling point. Meanwhile, even though the CS side probably won't quite have the same polish for several of its games, I feel like it will absolutely appeal more towards those interested in game preservation, the oddities, and especially rarities - Darius Alpha is one of the rarest HuCards for the PC Engine, after all!
I think both versions definitely have their merits, and I'm glad I got both, otherwise I probably wouldn't have played the arcade versions of the first couple games. I've now played every version there is of Darius Gaiden, and it's fun to look out for the small changes each addition brings. I don't plan on doing a news style video on the new cozmic collection, but once it comes out you can be damn sure I'll be making a video of it. But before that I'll likely be looking at G-Darius and Darius Burst on Playstation and PSP respectively
@@Bofner Makes sense. Hopefully by the time you do those videos, though, we'll know some of the changes that are coming to the two games included. I could easily see, for example, the Murakumo from DBCS being put into ACEX+, since they did not do that in Chronicle Saviours' AC Mode (a full port of ACEX).
@@Bofner , oh, as of last year, there is kind of a port of Darius for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, specifically, the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive Mini. More than likely, someone will make a homebrew cartridge of that game, as well as add some feature that the prototype homebrew port of the game contained. I also hope that Darius Cozmic Revelation not only contains that port of Darius, but that it also includes all of the Darius ports period, including the Japanese mobile phone ports of the game, as well as Super Darius II and all of the different Darius Burst games. Also, it is a pretty faithful port to its arcade counterpart, even more so than Darius II/Sagaia for that same system, so it has that going for that port of the game.
@@paxhumana2015 Actually, Taito themselves are releasing a physical cart of Darius MD! It ships in February! I'm planning on making a video about it when it comes out

Gaiden is superb, worth the price on its own. Darius I&II play really well on a decent size TV. If its too hard put it in training mode, easy and set power ups to max, a great chilled way to blast through and really enjoyable for a casual playthrough. Don't forget you can always use the quick save to get back into the game, these options for me make the arcade package far superior to the console pack.
Darius II had a 3 screen cabinet too. odd that they didn't include that since they have the original Darius running with the same setup in the collection.
I love the Darius series and specifically got a Samsung CHG90 just to play Darius 1-2 Ninja Warriors and Darius Burst in their full glory
Yeah, I was surprised to read IN GAME that darius II had a three screen variant, but that it was not available in the cozmic collection. Would have been a fun novelty to play around with
These collections aren’t about how many unique games are in each. They are about celebrating the series. That’s also why they can make them so expensive.

@@Bofner I dunno, man; when we''ve got the Castlevania and Contra Anniversary Collections offering twice as many games for $20 each, it sure makes Darius Cozmic Collection's prices seem inflated by comparison.
@@seanmyster6 You've got a real point here. While the multiple paths in Darius games definitely offer replay, the Castlevania and Contra games are just really solid, replayable titles that appeal to more people,and if Playstation 5 really does end up supporting ps2, the Taito Legends 2 is a cheaper way to play both G-Darius and Darius Gaiden which IMO are the best Darius games... although a quick ebay search makes me realize that collection has skyrocketed in price since I bought it years ago for $10...
My whole issue is the physical only release and pricing based on quantity produced.
I'm getting this game on sale for $20 digitally. I got the Darius arcade version and probably get the Darius console collection another time. Great review!
Yeah you should never try to get this game physically it's basically impossible let alone for the ps4 you can't even get that version of this game physically
Super Darius is on the TG16 mini. Hope they release a Saturn mini with Darius Gaiden, possible considering they made a Darius port for Mega Drive mini 😍
The Darius Port on MG Mini is amazing. Even better than the TG-16 version on the Cozmic Collection. I'm hoping to get some time in the future to sit down with it a bit more
I burned a copy of Super Darius II for the PC Engine CD. Duuuuuuude. You HAVE to play it. EASILY the best way to play Darius II
I play Darius games on a proyector at 125 inch.. So there´s no problem.. I already have the PS4 DARIUS BURST and looks extra, extra wide..
I'm lucky enough to have the Japanese special edition which has both versions on one cartridge - very convenient and the best of both worlds! I agree that I think I like the console versions of Darius 1/2 more than the arcade in some respects. The MD port of Darius 2 is really fun. I wish they would have included the PC Engine CD version of Darius Plus (Super Darius) which had new bosses for -every- stage. I guess they wanted to 'save' that for the PC Engine Mini which just came out.
They announced a Cozmic Collection 2, so if you and I are lucky it will have G-Darius, which often competes with Darius Gaiden as "the best Darius game in the series."
I'm super glad I got the Japanese Special Edition as well, and I'm really glad they added Darius Plus to it with the last update. If you haev a Megadrive or Genesis mini it comes with a new version of Darius with a 26 boss mode which is SUPER cool
@@Bofner That Darius is like Hidecade's work, he was putting together a MD version of the game, then he mysteriously quit tweeting updates on it after it appeared on the Genesis Mini, now M2/Taito are re-releasing it in cart form soon (with a Special Edition as well). Perhaps Hidecade was well compensated for his work, but I have also heard that M2 claims it is a game they put together. Personally, I think it's Hidecade's work all the way through, and M2 may have tweaked it a little.

I might get both the Arcade Collection and G-Darius HD download. I already have Chronicle Saviours on Steam and Gaiden is something I’d really like to play. Plus, the different versions of II and the original Darius and its different versions are cool too.
G-Darius HD is awesome, and it's getting some updates as well, like more Gadgets and Version 2 of G-Darius will come with it as well. I think you're making the right decision here haha

I just bought the Cozmic Collection Arcade. I have to wait for triple screen play till my brother has time for it but dual screen play is already really amazing.
You are really under estimating the value of the collections having so many versions of many of fhe games.
Also it's easy for you to yawn when talking about the original Darius, that it doesn't have as cool of bosses as the second one, but remember it's from 1986. That's only 6 years from Space Invaders and 4-5 years from Galaga. The OG darius is still a very playable and enjoyable game and was revolutionary with it's triple screen setup in 1986 because it still rare in 2021.
High quality arcade releases on consoles and PC are so rare. And these collections cover a lot of console and arcade history. Yeah there are a ton of arcade games released everywhere but almost all of them suffer from much lower sound quality compared to even emulation on Mame, not to even mention compared to original hardware.
I do agree that Darius is too wide to play properly without a two or three displays. Luckily the Steam version can do that now.

A really shame that they didn't added Super Darius (the original PCE CD version of Darius Plus), Super Darius II (Especially) and the original rare triple-screen version for Darius II.
Can someone explain to me just why the Darius games are always so comparatively expensive? I mean, they're good games, sure, but that doesn't necessarily equate to higher prices. Are there licensing complications involved? Or does the series just sell itself on nostalgia?
well raiden tends to be expensive too. i think its just because they are some of the few shmups series that have survived

Darius Cozmic Revelation IS going to have Gdarius. In fact they're calling it G Darius HD. It will also have Dariusburst Another Chronicle as well. It's JUST those two games, but from what I understand Dariusburst has a TON of content, and of course G Darius is just plain fun.

@@miunya NO! This game does NOT have G-Darius. G-Darius will either be included in the physical Darius Cozmic Revelation alongside Dariusburst, or as a standalone release digitally. It's available in Japan right now, but comes out in the west some time this summer. It's a bit pricey, I think it's more expensive or around the same price as this collection, but if you ONLY want G-Darius, then that's gonna be the one you want

Had the Console version included G-Darius and the heavily unknown PC Engine CD Super Darius II, it would've been more highly sought! Also where's "DARIUS GAIDEN - SILVER HAWK EXTRA VERSION?!!!!" sigh....
This really should have been one complete Darius collection-especially for the price. They should have listed the truly unique games, all in one package, and had the minor variations be bonuses. As is the collection has felt over priced and almost never goes on sale. Snagging the one with Gaiden, when on sale, is probably worth it if you're a super fan.

Not sure if anyone mentioned this. But the screen size on all games can change found under option.
That's right, but if you play in fullscreen mode on the original Darius everything gets super squashed because the aspect ratio is not maintained. Makes it feel like your horizontal movement is much slower than your vertical movement. There's no magic "single screen" version unfortunately, but that's what the console versions are for!
I honestly think that Darius Twin and Darius Force/Super Nova should have just been one game outright and that the whole game should have been called Darius Force.

Maybe hot take but the console Darius collection is legit offensive to me. No extras, No quality of life improvements, weak presentation, completely skips out on the super Darius games despite mentioning them, and also removes cheat codes in game for literally no reason. It’s shocking the difference in quality between M2’s consistently AMAZING arcade work only for how barebones and effortless their home console ports have been. The arcade collection and g Darius rereleases are awesome tho I love those
I think that's fair. Adding duplicate versions of games instead of just a region switch option, and not much else beside that. The console collection is definitely the superior version (for Darius Gaiden alone). I've since changed how I feel about SMS Sagaia, and actually love that game, but aside from that, the best Darius Console ports are only available on their respective consoles at the moment (Darius Extra for Mega Drive and Super Darius II for PC Engine)
For $60 that's a no thanks. I will stick to emulation.

yeah, I'm doing that too. Though the Psikyo ones are on sale now, not sure if $30 is worth it for each. Sucks the physical ones are forced LE so it force the higher price.

Do you think the console pack is a good value vs roms running on a FPGA device? At that price tag it does get very close to just getting a MisTer type device.
Depends what you're looking for. Obviously a MisTer or other FPGA will be able to run far more games than just these, so it's probably a better value for your money. I'm not super familiar with how FPGAs work, but you'd probably have to get a bunch of different emulator cores in order to get it to run all of the games on this collection, which may or may not be difficult. I am personally not a huge fan of using ROMs, especially when it comes to games that are available to buy on modern consoles. If it's possible, it's always best to support the companies that put these games back into availability. Personally I like having these games on my Switch because of the portability factor which is something you will most likely not get from an FPGA or the PS4 version unfortunately. Sorry for the really long reply haha
Thanks for the thoughtful reply. I don't have a Switch just a PS4. Portability is not a huge factor for me. Think I'll just get the Cozmic Collection Arcade to support M2 / more of these kind of releases.

Not really sure how I'd give it a number score. For perspective, Darius Gaiden is in my top 5 video games ever, so I could easily say that that game would be a 10 in my book. The Console collection is a decent collection and I REALLY enjoy the genesis version of Sagaia, and I like Darius Plus but the others I could do without. I would probably give the collection overall a 6.5/10 because I think that it is overpriced, but I would give Genesis Sagaia an 8 by itself. While $60 is expensive, a physical copy of the Sagaia cartridge is over $100 on Genesis, so you could always look at it as a bargain as well. Hope that helps!

I watched a bunch of videos of Super Darius and the new M2 Genesis Mini “port,” and they seem to have way better audio than Darius Plus. So there’s that.

@@thanksbetotap I gotta say, the genesis mini version of Darius is my favorite version so far. It's pretty much Darius Plus but with 26 bosses instead of 16, so each stage has its own end boss.
Looks like I bought the Collectors Edition on Switch and for PS4 Cozmic Collection Arcade back in Nov 2019 from SLG and still waiting on it to ship 😁.
It took them a damn long time (nearly a year) to ship my copy of Vasara, but it did eventually come. That being said I paid $40 for it, and it ended up being released on the eshop not one week after I ordered, and for $5 (it was 50% off at launch). I like what SLG is doing, but they really ought to prioritize getting things out in a timely fashion as opposed to just selling as much stuff as possible IMO

Honestly the console collection is only worth it if you have specific nostalgia for the home ports or Twin and Force and I personally don't. G Darius would have been a game changer but they separated that out for G Darius HD. Most importantly the arcade pack gives you Darius Gaiden which is arguably the best game in the series with only G Darius coming close. That alone gives the arcade collection the edge. For me the console games just aren't worth the price.
Can you also do a comparison between Psikyo Shooting Stars Alpha (with Strikers 1945 games) and Bravo (with Samurai Aces games)?
Unfortunately probably not anywhere in the near future for two main reasons: 1. They're expensive! I'm still in school and don't really have a stable source of income that I can drop on something that I'm not sure how much enjoyment I'll get out of it, and 2. I don't have the time to get familiar with two collections of games that size.
I won't rule it out, but if I do get around to it, it won't be for quite some time
Question about darius gaiden: how to activate rapid fire
It's in the menus. Not sure of the exact controls to get there for PS4, but on Switch you just hit one of the shoulder buttons and a menu comes up. You can then customize your controls and adjust autofire from there
Man, maybe I shouldn't have pre-ordered this. These could have been one disc, I picked the console one (didn't even realize there was two), it sounds like only Gaiden on the arcade version is any good, and I could just play Dariusburst CS instead. I love shmups, but sometimes I feel ripped off when I stray away from meatier ones in my modern or PS1/Saturn/PS2 comfort zone. The best retro one I've bought in recent years was probably the Battle Garegga disc for PS4.
There's definitely still fun to be had with the games on the console version, especially Darius II on the genesis/megadrive and Darius Plus on PC Engine

@@SotNist Sadly no, but Darius Plus is very similar. It adds extra bosses, but not as many as the M2 port. Still fun though. The genesis version of Darius II was made back in the 90's I think by taito themselves

How do you capture the midstage bosses to fight on your side (in Darius Gaiden)..? Is this also possible on the Saturn version.? And why do you think the Saturn version is better?
To capture mid stage bosses you have to shoot the orb off of their head before killing them, and then running into the orb as it floats towards you. It can be a bit tricky depending on which mid boss you're facing. I found the stage 2 boss to be the best to practice with since the 3rd stage is pretty hard and the 1st stage boss is easy to kill before getting the orb. I like the Saturn version more because it's slightly easier simply due to the game playing marginally slower. Also the Saturn controller is so much better than using the joycon, and I can play it on my CRT TV. And yes, you can capture mid bosses in any version of Darius gaiden, I've played them aaallllllll
@@Bofner Agree with the Saturn being the superior home version of Gaiden - the sat control pad and a CRT are the killer choice for that game :-)

Yeah it's unfortunate that it wasn't in these collections. G-Darius is getting released this month in Japan on Darius Cozmic Revelation though, but it would have been really nice to have had it packed with Gaiden. Dariusburst is still good though

In EU sadly no. However, you can easily create a Japanese account. You just need to set up a second user on your Switch, and set the region to Japan. You can then access the Japanese eshop and get them that way. They are called the Darius Cozmic Collection (This is the arcade version) and the Darius Cozmic Collection Consumer Edition. I just checked and it looks like they are both 30% off right now too

I played the demo of r-type final 2, and personally wasn't feeling it very much. Darius Gaiden on the other hand I can come back to again and again. Try out the R-type final 2 demo and see what you think, but this collection has a lot of content to it

@@matt79hz You prefer 3D graphics? And you specifically want to play on Switch? You might want to look into Dariusburst Another Chronicle EX plus. It's got the multiple different routes that Darius Gaiden has as well as some other game modes. I have a video on it (called Darius Cozmic Revelation). I don't think it's released in the west yet, but if you make a second nintendo account and set the region to Japan, you can purchase Japanese games. The text in-game is all in english, so there's no language barrier to worry about. It has a couple of issues that I go over in detail in my video, but the biggest one might be the resolution, as the game is in 32:9, so if you're playing in handheld mode, it can be a little tricky to see.

Hmmm that's a tough one. I honestly think that Darius Gaiden is easily the most fun game is the Darius Series, so if I had to make the decision I would say the Arcade collection.
BUT I know a lot of people who say that G-Darius or Dariusburst are their favorites. CS is definitely good, but it's kind of a short game. You only go through 4 or so Zones per playthrough, and the game usually goes for $60 (though it's frequently on sale for $25 on steam).
I really like CS, but mostly just for its campaign, so if you wanted to get CS for the campaign, I would suggest waiting for the Darius Cozmic Revelation to come out (which is only a couple months away) because it comes with CS AND G-Darius.
But for me, I will never get bored of Darius Gaiden, so even with all of that, my personal choice would be the Arcade collection.

i grew up playing darius twin. its the only darius game i played until i later used emulation for the original darius on GBA i think. i recently played super nova and dear god it looks like shit and it came out 4 years after twin so theres no excuse. the only copy i own of any darius game today is the one thats on psVita. i love darius and maybe gradius is its only real competitor just based off of watching short clips. sadly i dont see darius making a return any time soon to modern consoles.
Yeah unfortunately not in the same capacity as it used to. I'd love to see a Darius game done in the style of the new Pocky and Rocky game, or the new Ninja Warriors game. Modern pixel art with a gameplay style like the older games

My guess is they didn't want to put all of their eggs into one basket. Darius Gaiden and G-Darius together would be an insane collection.
Instead they split them up, and G-Darius is being released alongside Dariusburst Chronicles Ex in a new collection called Darius Cozmic Revelation sometime this winter

@@cloudstrife1983 Yeah those were my thoughts as well. My guess is it's going to look a lot like the Castlevania Requiem collection, just 2 or 3 games, most likely G-Darius and Burst. Not really sure what else they have to throw on there. They seem adament about not letting anyone play the gameboy version of Sagaia hahah

The Japanese version goes on sale so I picked up the Darius Cosmic Collection Arcade and Space Invaders Infinity for half price after buying some PlayAsia gift cards for the Nintendo Japanese online store. Most everything is in English so it wasn't a problem after I bought them.
It's on sale right now!
No G-Darius, not worth it, plus their prices are ridiculous.

@@Bofner Also, you failed to mention the fact that Darius II also had a three screen display in the arcade and that it wasn't just the two screen variant like you said. It even states this in the Arcade Collection.
