Her first stop is Blackwell's Bookshop, where she discovers the rich history of the store and delves into Tolkien's early poetry, crafted within its very walls. To celebrate the anniversary of Roald Dahl's 100th birthday, we headed to The Story Museum to ask Oxford's youngest authors what inspires them, who their favourite writers are, and why they read and write stories.
Love him.
Hi George... Do you want a baloon?
Looking like Grand Maester Pycelle ngl
Mr. Martin seems very lucid and down to earth in this interview.
G.R.R.M.: "If there was one thing I would change about my books, is they would be finished." Me: Well, you're the only one who can make that happen, Mr. George. But I understand the challenge, as a writer currently writing what I pray will be my debut novel, just about three years now. Two and a half simce I started the manuscript. It's easy to write; it's difficult to write well. So, prayerfully it doesn't take me another decade and a half to write this book.
I'm so glad to see how excited George was to meet Philip because His Dark Materials was my favourite story, now it's tied with ASOIAF, and I wish I could go to the timeline/multiverse where Philip wasn't sick and did make it (typing this while I paused the video at the 15:35 mark) so I could see them talk about adaptations. I would pay A LOT of money to see that convo between those two authors because they both wrote such complex stories and are so different, but they also have a lot in common. What I wouldn't give to have see that convo...
Martin's trus source of inspiration for GOT and Cersei's long quest for power was Isabella of Castille th-cam.com/video/Cgjb1gHPCZw/w-d-xo.html
I honestly though it was a conversation with George Martin and Aurora.
I think GRRM would actually change one key thing - he would never have abandoned the timeskip he wrote into the narrative after ASOS in ~2000-2002. Abandoning it cost him years of work and momentum and created more narrative problems than it solved.
I’m in agreement, and many other authors, with his thoughts on faithful adaptations. I’ve loved many books turned into movies and tv, and I’ve sometimes managed to begrudgingly enjoy it. But sometimes, for example, The Dark Tower, and many, many other adaptations just don’t fit. They don’t sit right with me, and many other fans, and I can’t understand why so many changes are made because the marital for the basis is most superior to the adaptation. This happens so often, you’d think something would click and they’d get it. I fully support authors, and I doubt many other content creators, say painters, would go for this type of manipulation.

OxfordSHIRE.
I my mind, we will get The Winds of Winter, but both Blood & Fire and A Dream of Spring seem less secure, given his age. But then again he might grow to live 110, who knows?😅
Always love listening to him
He's looking like he's been doing some cardio and lost some weight. Good for him
if he starts singing ‘singing in the rain’ during this talk i’m gonna freak out
My man has lost a tone off weight
The idea of the ASOIAF animated series is quite lit, actually. I would love to watch a line-by-line adaptation of the books, even if it becomes 1000 episodes long.
Is she the woman from sam harris' ted talk?
no elden ring mentioned?
So my man George decided that he wants to become Heizenberg.
He looks good and I love to see it. Looks like he lost some weight and that can really lower the strain on your heart. As a massive Martinhead, I wish him the best cause I love him regardless of if he finishes the series or not
I was positively surprised to see Carolyne Larrington on stage. Her book "The Norse Myths" was a brilliant introduction to Norse mythology. I am also excited to read her translation of the Poetic Edda when I finish some on-going books. I know she has written three books about Martin's world, so she was a very fitting host. Fantastic interview.
Love you George
Just don't die before finishing the novels 🙏😭😭😭
What if you die before he finishes? 😊
@@आवारा-ज8ण then my ghost will haunt him until he finished the novels ☹️
He has a different drip now 😂
Looks like he lost weight
I hope it is not the illness.
Went here to just to check out how George is like nowadays. I expected to watch parts of the video just for like 3 minutes but I was absolutely captivated by his thoughts, jokes, and that whole Book vs Adaptation thing. Glad to see GRRM is still GRRM
wish i had so much imagination
Undefined magic systems only seem unpredictable because they don’t have any rules or constraints! Lol it’s not accurate to call something fake science when the entire book is in fact “fake” and, by definition, fiction in the first place! The reason defined magic systems can be so much more interesting than nebulous undefined magic is because the rules and bounds of the system lend themselves to an extension of actual science and exciting and unpredictable actions in a story are more exciting for readers who understand details of why magic is or is not behaving a way previously understood by its definition! Undefined magic systems have no rules and are not very unpredictable or exciting because nobody understands them 😂
Thing is, some readers like it. Others are more like you. There's room for both.
Asoiaf is the best series in any kind of fiction imo. I have never seen an author who liked being on stage or being on camera more than George.
He looks great, like he's been losing weight, getting Rest, Writing the Winds of Winter! 😂😂🤞🏾🤞🏾🥰🥰
Does less weight mean more page count done?
I thought thats Aurora interviewing him
He looks healthy and a bit lighter, which only matters cause it will help him live a long healthy life. He is a gem, all the best to GRRM
Spill the beans Martin, who s the prologue pov
Big Dawg still got it 😎
9:35 Hmmmmmm HotD Hhhmmmmmmm
i guess, george rr martin WILL NEVER finish his books. because of his age + now he is a pretty busy man with a lot of projects, However the fans did not get the last two books, still, his 5 books till this day is a masterpiece and there are lots and lots of theories around them, regardless of Their saturated content. so what im saying through the years and with all GOT sequels have been published including, tv shows, MAYBE movies or animated series, according to their content fans will fulfill some of the mysterious theories around the story, therefore they can write an alternative ending for A Song Of Ice And Fire, if they were ambitious about it in the next few years sure, OR after GRRM passing away maybe some writer will accomplish the last two books according to GRRM notes (which is the most probable), in the end his world is just fantastic as it is without being finished, then how it would be it's ending?
WINDS OF WINTER AND A DREAM OF SPRING
I 100% thought from the thumbnail that the yellow lady was aurora still I stayed and watched and its an excellent talk thank you!!!!
You're not alone, and you're quite welcome.
I will always love GRRM. He’s a wonderful person. However, I’m not watching any more of the new HBO shows.
They f his books and it’s his fault for not suing them
Imagine if they destroy Dunk and Egg. I might loose it ngl
@@mum-your yeah, I’m not even watching it
George looking goood... good for him!
Anyone binge watching George RR Martin interviews?
Yes
He's a genius
Me
@@kimdracula95 Is your name a Deftones’ reference?
@@3rd_iimpact yes it is
Does he talk about Elden Ring? time stamp?
He doesn't.
9:40 Yes, thats how they messed up House of the Dragon, Helaena just says "Aemond You'll Die" like wtf. Dragon Dreams don't work like that, its messy, they misinterpret it, which ends in a disaster. Aemond/Daemon's final battle should not even be a prophecy, theres nothing to chase like with prophecy of azor ahai. Even the dreams are so on the nose, why would they show dany? Show a person with a flaming sword or a baby, a savage and which transforming into a dragon idk man its so dumb what they did. I can see why Martin is pissed.
👍
This man is such an amazing author. It would be a tragedy if he doesn't finish A Song Of Ice & Fire. It is looking less and less likely now that he is in his mid 70's and the TV show adaptation climaxed years ago with their version of the ending. He did mention a couple of years ago, however, that he was 75% of the way through completing Winds Of Winter. So I've still got my fingers crossed. Come on, George!
For sure. It is a tragedy :(. Would have been the best series ever but I still love those books so much. It’s just heartbreaking that we will never know how it ends :(
An amazing author? Before GOT final season landed he stated the ending was faithful to his plans, only to come back on his own words after he saw all the criticisms saying it would actually be different 😅😅😅
@@EC-mg4gb so what? ASOIF is still 4000 pages of amazing writing, so he’s an amazing writer
@@EC-mg4gb and last year he said that the more he writes the more the story deviates from the show, so no the ending is different. and not only the ending, almost everthing since season 4 (half of season 4 aswell)
I know this may be unpopular, but I’m less interested in brans magic and more interested in aryas magic with the faceless men. I feel like that would be a great spinoff
Long long time ago GRRM wanted to write a post asoiaf book about Arya in Braavos. I would love him to develop a spin off like that.
Should have asked the Rhaegar question first
If you read through all the lines when George talks about adaptations, he is saying how terrible GoT was finished. And how D&D/HBO screwed it up. However, HBO did want to do more seasons but ironically D&D rushed it to write Star Wars - which then Disney replaced them because of how bad S8 of GoT was
