He is getting up there in years. For any fan the genre it’s concerning. Remember Wheel of Time? Sometimes these guys die before they finish. Stay healthy GRRM.
In the beginning, the host asked GEORGE RR MARTIN, what happened to the elephant? Well, basically it IS mentioned in the book that it was returned to the Sealord of Braavos to maintain peace. Poor George also made a mistake since he said the dragons are the elephant, but dragons (at least the big ones) had died by that time so both the question and the answer were wrong.
The largest dragon the Targaryens had was Balerion the Black Dread. He was said to be so large he could swallow an aurochs whole, not an elephant. Aurochs is the ancestor of modern day cattle, now extinct in the real world. They were a lot bigger than modern day cows, but still a lot smaller than elephants. In any case, Balerion died of old age some 40 years before Alyn Velaryon brought the elephant to Westeros. As a matter of fact, shortly before Alyn's journey the Dance of Dragons happened, which killed most of the Targaryen dragons. What dragons remained to them were either hatchlings or very young dragons, which would have been relatively small.
Tolkien's dragon was great, I loved reading about him, but it is delicious when there are dragons that are flyable like fighter jets, more or less. Smaug was just terrifying. Dani's dragon's are too, but at least rideable.
At 11:17,after he said “I’ve lost that battle ( trying to keep ahead of the show )”, I think he meant to say something to the effect of “so for quite some time I didn’t get it together to continue writing”, but eventually swallowed it.
34:10 In 1440, the 16-year-old William Douglas, 6th Earl of Douglas and his younger brother were invited to dine with the ten-year-old King James II of Scotland. Later called the Black Dinner, the occasion was organised by the Lord Chancellor, Sir William Crichton. While they ate, a black bull's head, a symbol of death, was brought in and placed before the Earl. The two brothers were then dragged out to Castle Hill, given a mock trial and beheaded.
Maybe in book two his demise will be mentioned hopefully as a piece of history. "After writing his controversaial history of the Targarian Dynasty Archmaester Vhaegon was seized and beheaded" (Written by the very circumspect Archmaester Whatever you say my Lord)

I loved how he just gave this huge anecdote just to ask about what happened to the elephant
By gumbo, that was a great conversation!
12:05 Johnnie Walker=John Snow
White Walker=Night King
GRRM's Bottle of Johnnie Walker=White Walker
Therefore John Snow becomes the Night King confirmed.
Who the fuck is John Snow?
When reading- Val seemed to be a parallel to the Night's King bride story to me. Making me think that happens, but Stannis seems to be the one to become NK. He wants to be king at any cost.
A knowledgeable, entertaining,, funny host who despite all this doesn't think the event is about him? What is this dark magic?? Good job
Respect to George R R Martin for pronouncing 'Smaug' correctly. Makes me feel like kissing the lovely man.
Smog is a much better pronunciation for a dragon. Sorry overruled by majority! Tolkien should have known this would happen anyway.
Maybe he knew this could happen, but I guess he still had some faith in his reader's intelligence, and also knew a lot would be able to pronounce it right.
@@bbaattttlleemmooddee diphthongs sound more interesting, though, and saying it properly is just as easy as saying "round", (just swap out the consonants) and don't get stuck on the spelling, as is true for most proper names in Tolkien's works..
Everyone I've met in the UK says smaug and it sounds like a much caller name, smog is not a great dipthong as it doesn't refer to smoke and fire but to haze caused by city pollution so not very dragon-like
Wonder how all that beard would feel against your skin.
“I will take back what’s mine with fire and blood!”- George rr Martin
Wow, there were no awkward moments where the interviewer was bullshitting knowledge or huge lulls in the conversation. This was a genuinely listenable interview, well done.
solid ending. good stuff Eric. and great job, moderator. excellent qna!!
Just finished Fire & Blood and loved it. Take a break from Winds of Winter George - I need a full transcription of A Caution for Young Girls immediately.
this was so good that i realized that i watched the entire hour and 13 mins of it after watching it
The fact that at the end of that super obscure and specific question about the elephant, George literally had an answer that tied into the larger story is just astounding
This man is pure creativity genius. Hope he will continue his great work, for a another 20 years :) It would be enough to finished the series i suppose ;)
And i wish to know if he know the Temeraire series by Naomi Novik, and what his thoughts on this.
Thank you for this video! You are an amazing writer, you have brought so much joy to a lot of peoples lives and we will be forever grateful 💞💞
Best GRR Martin interview. Loved it
The host is fantastic! 10/10
I agree wholeheartedly with the final non-question. Everything George R.R. Martin gives us is a fantastic, irreplaceable gift and I am very grateful. Please know the lovers far outweigh those who don't wait gracefully. George you are an absolute genius. Your books and the pleasure of seeing your work brought to life with Game of Thrones have greatly enriched my life, for I am a person with an insatiable mind that you somehow satiate. We 🎶love you more than words can tell🎶.
How many times can you watch a guy interrupt the person he's there to interview? Fucking hell, Martin is such a pro
I feel so bad for George talking about Winds of Winter and of the "time aspect" he is just so perfectionistic. I love the dude.
Sean bean: "You died in show ? ...twice? haha...Oh my summer child! thats cute ."
What a great interview! It's nice to see a host that knows the material and also just lets GRRM talk
Lol you cant be serious. The interviewer is an annoying narcissist that interrupted George at every turn, to make dumb jokes.
Eric almost brought a tear to my eye with that. I have echoed those sentiments from 1:11:00 onwards to impatient fans in George's defence many a time and hearing that other true fans are out there is beautiful 🌟
FRED knew the job was dangerous when he took it, not Super Chicken. Thank you for playing our game and here are your lovely parting gifts!
this George R R Martin definitely watches a lot of game of thrones
I think he worked on the shows
You can tell George dies a little more inside every time he is asked when Winds of Winter is coming. xD
It's release date gets pushed back a week every time someone asks him
@@Cam._S well were never getting it now then lol
I really like that he told the story about watching all the boats go by and fanticising about where they were going. because I noticed sansa also played that game wit shae in the kings landing harbor
Good Stuff! The Imagination and writing skills this man possesses is incredible!
"I'm John Hodgman I don't matter"
First line made me love this guy.
Great video. I can listen to this man talk for hours. So intelligent.
The entrance with the GOT music on an organ alone...
Great choice :)
It's like they can look at a 1 and not bungle it by calling it a 2 or something. Most amazing, and clever.
@@bfkc111 Sorry, what??? That went way over my head :)
I think there was a drum as well....
@The Order of the Green Hand I just got to the part where they asked, and GRRM answered your question!!! So cool!!! Haha
@Ramsay Snow 1:00:57, the question from "Dave and Mary Ellen" lol
I had this in the background, the whole interview was like "Notice me senpai".I m just kiddin, but I can tell the interviewer is a huge fan of GRR Martin
GRRM is a genius. Great interview, thank you.
He's a troll that writes about rape, incest, and torture. He has become one of the laziest writers in recent history.
Great writer, I think its a stretch to label him a genius.
King Jaehaerys the wise is one of Martin favorite characters besides then Daemon the rogue prince and Tyrion Lannoster.
"My name is John Hodgman, and I don't matter"
Waits for laugh......................
Nope. Owch.
Holy shit! That hurt me for some reason
DREAM OF SPRING!
Great conversation. Thanks for uploading.
Also, SO many TH-cam ads. If there is a dial labelled 'TH-cam adverts at irregular intervals and audio volumes' I guess you cranked it up to the 'beyond maximum/unsafe' setting
Part 2 with mad king and more on Tywin will be soo brilliant
A great host and a perfect artist
Two awesome folks together on the same stage!
How did I miss this?! I live twenty minutes away!!
Why does this not have more views?
28:20
It sounds simple, but he’s making an excellent point about magic systems.
When horses change sex or eye color changes, I'd attribute it to Magic. Or the Gods.
Rly? Why not just an inconsequential mistake?
@@daddyleon I was stealing a line from The Simpsons. Didn't mean to offend. Sorry if I did.
@@grokeffer6226 I didn't know that, but don't worry, I wasn't offended. And sorry if I hurt your feelings, I didn't mean to. But some people really do seem quite annoyed by those tiny ass mistakes, and i can't really understand why they'd let that get to them so much.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@daddyleon Oh. OK. People are all getting impatient with such a long wait between seasons and books. Me, too. No worries.
@@grokeffer6226 Yeah I know the feeling :P
But still...he's caught between a rock and a wall of spears.
I believe writing fire and blood adds tremendous complexity to the next plots in winds of winter and dream of spring
Definitely enjoyed Fire and Blood. I read through the whole thing in four days.
Bygumbo! What a great interview, bygumbo. Thanks!
Love the host.
Love the crowd.
Love George the Great
When your such a good writer that 1000s of years from now people will believe this is all actually history.
Tolkien's dragon was great, I loved reading about him, but it is delicious when there are dragons that are flyable like fighter jets, more or less. Smaug was just terrifying. Dani's dragon's are too, but at least rideable.
I’m not really a reader but I really want to read this book!
Did you do so? If not... why not start now?
At 11:17,after he said “I’ve lost that battle ( trying to keep ahead of the show )”, I think he meant to say something to the effect of “so for quite some time I didn’t get it together to continue writing”, but eventually swallowed it.
I agree that he swallowed something. Then he went on to say that he decided to finish Winds and continue to Dreams as he originally had intended.
44:35. Some HBO is having an aneurysm at this exact moment.
I worship this man, and have for many years. I am looking forward to his next books more than anything else in my life. No hyperbole.
What has been the main cause for the delay of 'Winds of Winter'?
You guessed it.
Frank Stallone.
Cool, another Norm fan!
Why don't I get this Frank Stallone reference ? Can someone explain ? Does it have anything to do with Norm Macdonald?
th-cam.com/video/9q4j3Gg6qAE/w-d-xo.html
No he’s the main reason. He’s money mad
@@wileyschmitt "Norm" - How about just saying the whole f*cking name, you idiot? Do you get paid by appearing like a cagey smart-ass?
This guy really loves those dragons.
It is nice that they found something for John Hodgman to do.
this is the best interview I've seen yet
Ooooh I hope John comes back to host when the next book comes out!
My one and only question for you George. What happened to Archmaester Vhaegon Targaryen? We didn't get to know of his demise in the book.
Maybe in book two his demise will be mentioned hopefully as a piece of history.
"After writing his controversaial history of the Targarian Dynasty Archmaester Vhaegon was seized and beheaded" (Written by the very circumspect Archmaester Whatever you say my Lord)
Fantastic interview. Best host ever. Grrm was so lively in this
I remember watching this. It was a nice interview though I wish the host would stop making noise whenever George is talking.
Simply the best!
John so should have played Patchface.
I love that author.
