    I actually prefer my home gym to have dimmed light. When it’s so bright I feel like it’s too sterile. Dimmed or natural light really help me get in the mood and enjoy my workout. I also have the walls painted a darker color and the whole atmosphere is really great.

      I'm in my early 50s and started lifting back in the "grungier", darker gym period(mid 1980s.) The idea of the very bright and sterile gym doesn't appeal to me. On the other hand I've always had a lot of posters and other things attached to the walls to give my basement a certain look and feel.

      I agree. I work harder if my home gym feels like a dungeon.
      I would use torches or a bonfire for lighting if it wouldn't burn down the house

    Keeping your equipment organized and stored neatly adds a ton of aesthetic appeal to the gym. I got a couple wall control panels to hold accessories as well as barbell storage to attach to the rack and it’s made a big difference in the overall feel and appearance to our gym.

    Lighting upgrade is huge. I had individual bulbs that hung down. Couldn't do overhead movements with them. Swapped for some recessed lighting for like 20 bucks and it's been a game changer. Looks better and can comfortably go overhead. Also, a good sound system/speaker makes a huge difference.

    I’d say getting a custom logo made, it’s not as much as people think and it allows you to get custom signs, flags, apparel, etc in the future. I’m not an influencer or have any social media presence but having a custom logo for myself with custom decals around the gym gives a very personal feel.

    🔴 Bolt Covers - My rack is black with “chrome” bolts. I thought the bolts were ugly and considered painting them black so they wouldn’t be as noticeable. But I went with red vinyl bolt caps which match the accent color of the rack accessories. They also prevent chafing/cutting of the henny strap. The vinyl caps were 19 cents each on Amazon.

      @@JoshR324 YT has been eating my replies with links. Search for "uxcell 50pcs Rubber End Caps 17mm ID Vinyl Vinyl Round Tube Bolt Cap Cover Screw Thread Protectors Red"
      It took a bit of measuring to find the right diameter for my bolts. You'll want a snug fit. And a bit of counting to find all the bolts to cover. I needed 56 actually.
      But these were too long so I had to cut them down to the right length for the bolt ends and the various depths of the nut ends. Then I hot glued them so they'd stay on and not pop off.
      It was more work than I expected, but adds a bit of snazz and protects my strap from getting chafed/cut.
      Good luck!

I also quite like the grungy darker "used" looking gym. I do find it's good to do small bits and pieces to your home gym every so often as it keeps excitement in the room.

    What about a video or video series on how you would set up a quarter (10’ x 10’) or half (10’ x 20’) of a garage if you were starting with nothing? Maybe a budget, mid-tier, and ultimate setup for the average spaces most of us garage owners are working with? This would really help us visualize a layout and make purchases that will help us get the most out of a limited space.

    • @BasementBrandon
      @BasementBrandon  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Might be able to do that. My garage set up before was pretty small!

  • @Bearded360

    There is something to say about the dark dungeon feel. My old gym felt like underground warrior training. I recently moved into a house with a two-car garage that is being set up as we speak in my new gym. It is very well-lit, and I enjoy this look as well. Either way, gym flooring, and wall banners are a must.

    • @BasementBrandon
      @BasementBrandon  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In my earlier basements I didn't give much thought to the lighting and found the dimly lit areas made me feel a bit more sleepy. The nice thing with having the lights already there is you can just turn them off or dim them in some cases.

  • @KenJones1961
    @KenJones1961 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You should do a series of viewer gyms. It could be a couple of videos dedicated to viewer gyms, but when many folks would be left behind. You could do a couple every video as an ongoing part of your videos. I've read some of the comments and it seems to have a vast array of opinions, looks, and feels. Some like bright and airy while some like a darker feel.
    I'm walling off part of my garage so it can be insulated and climate controlled without dumping all of the A/C out the garage door as that is our primary mode of entry. (The garage is on the side of the house and thus a much more convenient route of entry.) We never open the other garage door as it doesn't have an opener and it's further from the interior garage door. The thing about lighting I've rolled around in my head is not putting light directly over the rack so you're not staring directly into the light while benching. I do like daylight color temperature to wake me up. I haven't decided on a color scheme, tho. My biggest issue is I'm confined to an 11' x 24' space with 104" ceilings. I have to put a full rack and associated lifting space in with the cardio AND storage. I'm not keen on putting the rack width-wise as that limits plate access on the bar. I also have two windows that limit where I can put things. It's a struggle. It's like playing Tetris with heavy shit.

    • @BasementBrandon
      @BasementBrandon  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a great sized space still and many people would kill for that kind of headroom. I know GarageGymGainz does a view gym series, so wouldn't want to rip him off, but could be fun to do.

    My basement height is 7'2 so close to 7 ft if I put some floor mats down..
    I'm 6'1 and thinking that the ceiling height is a little too low.. I definitely couldn't do any overhead movements or pullups?
    Any honest thoughts and opinions you could offer would be appreciated Sir

      Mine are pretty tall, around 106" or so. Even in a shorter ceiling you can find ways to work around it, like seated military press instead of OHP.
