Even though Dalton only did 2 Bond films, he left an indelible impression on the franchise in his own unique way. Pierce Brosnan's debut was highly anticipated at the time, but once Timothy Dalton stepped into the role, I wanted to see him do more movies as 007. He looked good in the famous tuxedo and he was very convincing as an action hero with a rough edge.

I’ve always thought this too. Dalton was my bond (despite being born in the 90’s) as I watched all of my James Bond’s on TV or mostly via VHS that I purchased from various discount shops with my pocket money I saved up. The Living Daylights was my first one.
Personally, I think Roger Moore should still have done Octopussy. The film fit his style and still brought him back down to earth, leaving his bond on a cliffhanger of “did he retire and run away with Octopussy?”
The rest fit perfectly into Dalton’s Bond. For Your Eyes only would be a great opener for him (because that mission is for his eyes only and not Roger’s) and View to a Kill fits his more athletic, real world Bond too (and would give background to his riding ability showin in TLD, although Dalton riding Horses extensively in two films might be a little repetitive).

If Timothy Dalton did more than two films, he should have done A View to a kill, The Living Daylights and License to kill. It would have been interesting to see Dalton's Bond Vs Max Zorin. I don't have a favourite Bond l, I think they are all great but if someone said you have to say one actor I would say Roger Moore. Roger Moore was good in a view to a kill but I think it would have been interesting to see Dalton's Bond against Zorin and how the film would have played out with Dalton as Bond in the film, I think it would have been darker.

This is the biggest shame in Bond history for me. To this day, he's still my favorite Bond and it's saying something considering he only did 2. I think the best possible time for him to start would have been for Octopussy and a View to a Kill. Octopussy is fantastic but I'd like to think the cartoony elements such as the Tarzan call, telling a tiger to sit, the dead body corpse part along with the clown disguise wouldn't have happened. A View to a Kill could have been dynamite with Dalton with perhaps a better actress for Stacey and/or better dialogue. fYEO is the perfect end to Moore's Bond for me. Hes clearly aging and he's aware that he's older so it could have worked as his "final mission". Great video as always.

Dalton was a great bond who should’ve started his tenure earlier. I think both his films are solid, Licence To Kill is his best and for me in my Top 5.
I think had he started with A View To A Kill it would’ve been a perfect introduction to him. Naturally they would’ve had to have revised the script and remove the silly humour and change the tone but Dalton V.S Walken would’ve been a far better match. The fight on the Golden Gate Bridge was a great location but Moore looked like he was about to pull a hernia and it was hardly a fight, he basically trips Walken. Can you imagine how much better that fight would’ve been if Dalton and Walken done it? I can picture Bond taking the axe off Zorin and Zorin resorts to an Uzi being passed to him by the nutty doctor and before he can pull the trigger, bond knocks it out of his hand with the axe and punches him off the bridge. Would’ve been so much more epic.

I agree, had Timothy Dalton been cast as James Bond sooner it would have been fantastic. It really would have taken the series back to where it started. The 1980's would have been Dalton's time to shine, with the right changes to the screenplays of the first three movies. I also like to imagine that in this possible scenario the problems that affected Licence To Kill's production(the 1988 writers guild strike, United Artists/MGM's internal issues with people/budget, poor marketing campaign and a release in a crowded summer full of squeals to other popular movies) would be largely avoided thanks to clearer heads and Dalton having proved himself already to the studio suits.

I’ll say it again and again till I’m blue in the face - Timothy Dalton is the most underrated James Bond ever, and the second best Bond behind Connery. It’s a shame circumstances beyond his control prevented him from completing his trilogy in the early 90’s, because had he started as early as 81/83, I believe he would have taken the franchise in a darker and more Cold War-oriented direction after the light-hearted and fun-loving antics of the Moore era.
To me, Octopussy is a Moore film. It’s ending is tailor made for him, and I can’t see Dalton doing the silly stuff like swinging on a vine like Tarzan, telling a tiger to sit, or dressing up as a clown. End it in 1981 with the Battle of the Bonds. For Your Eyes Only though? Definitely a Dalton film. It’s stripped back and realistic approach would have been perfect for him. For starters, the Bibi Dahl silliness, as well as the parrot talking to Thatcher, would have to go. Every time i cast a Dalton version of FYEO, I’d release it in 1983, have Blondie perform the theme instead of Sheena Easton and cast Rutger Hauer as Kristatos, which would mean a solid debut for Dalton.
View to a Kill? Rewrite it, keep Max Zorin and May Day, keep Duran Duran’s banger of a theme, and cast Farrah Fawcett (Charlie’s Angels reunion) as Stacey = a better outing.
Keep TLD and LTK the way they are. They’re easily both top 5 Bond films.
And finally, Dalton would sign off with Whisper from Hell (AKA Property of a Lady) in 1991 with Elizabeth Hurley as the main Bond girl, John Lone as the main villain, and Anthony Hopkins as Denholm Crisp. We then get a three year break, and then in comes Brosnan with GoldenEye. If only......

Seems Billington, Brolin & Warbeck were possible Bond replacements late 70's - early 80's. Moore's 3 picture deal ended in 1977.
By 1986 they were all a bit too old & their time had gone.
Moore said he was quitting in 1979 after finding out Brolin had been tested. Then signed up for FYEO a few weeks later.

I personally would have loved to have seen Timothy Dalton in more Bond films. The thought of him in a confrontation with Christopher Walken just gives me chills. I would have liked his "tenure" as Bond to have gone from For Your Eyes Only until Goldeneye (which unfortunately was caught in some legal battle, otherwise it would have been made with Dalton). That said, Timothy Dalton is known to have a varied acting career and he is easily the best actor ever to play Bond. He is more interested in challenging himself as an actor rather than being a celebrity. The other Bond actors, with due respect, will be remembered mainly as Bond but Mr. Dalton will not only be remembered as Bond but as Rochester in Jane Eyre, Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights, Sir Malcolm in Penny Dreadful, Skinner in Hot Fuzz (very funny) and Mr. Pricklepants in Toy Story among others. What a long, and illustrious career.

Dalton should have been the 80s Bond. Sean was great for the 60s and Roger was perfect for the 70s. Beginning in the 80s, action films began to be a bit more violent and edgy. John Glen worked that into the films and toughened Moore. I love FYEO as it is and Octopussy is great. Still, I would have loved to see Dalton in them. He definitely needed to be in AVTAK.

I think Roger Moore was great in both FYEO and OP as an older Bond, so I will not remove him from this couple. But having Dalton started in AVTAK would have been a great and fresh start for him. He would had a realistic debut and brutal movie, with sadistic and charismatic villain. Even with this outcome the fate of both LD and LTK would have been different. And I honestly think, with 3 movies it still would have been more softer bridge for public to Dalton's brutalliest performance in LTK.

Warbeck's Wiki page says he was considered for LALD. Possible, but he had only starred in one film before then, in 1969.
Warbeck became an action man around 1980. Starring in a handful of unknown action films.

  • @jamesatkinsonja

It's a bit of an internet myth that Goldeneye was 'Written for Dalton' as if the script was untouched from day one [which rarely happens on any film as the script is constantly evolving even during filming]. Dalton did see the first draft of the script by Micheal France which didn't have Trevelyan nor the Goldeneye EMP device so was presumably very different to the finished film.
After France added these elements [though Trevelyan didn't resemble his film counterpart], the script was re-written by Jeffery Caine, Kevin Wade [uncredited though Jack Wade was named after him] and Bruce Feirstein to the extent that France only got a story credit. By this point the script was considerably different and written to match Brosnan's strengths which is why he was able to hit the ground running.

    • @FranzSanchez-ky9up
      @FranzSanchez-ky9up 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

I always assumed the basic structure was the same, with some of the more lighthearted moments added later. The plotting of Goldeneye feels more plausible than Brosnan's later films, which is probably how the "it was written for Dalton" stories developed. If Trevelyan or even the Goldeneye device itself wasn't in the original script, then it doesn't sound like the finished product at all mirrors what was originally written with Dalton in mind.

    • @ricardocantoral7672
      @ricardocantoral7672 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

I have read the script. The Bond in that first draft of GoldenEye was closer to Dalton in The Living Daylights. That movie was definitely written for him in mind. Trevelyan was an older man and the GoldenEye device was called the Tempest.

I've been a Bond fan since the age of 4. A View to a Kill, and For your eyes only are my ultimate favorite Bond films. I actually preferred Roger's 80's films vs his 70's ones. I think the best timeline change would have been Dalton from 87-97. I enjoyed Goldeneye and Tomorrow never dies but think they may have been better with Dalton.

    00-Henry! You never disappoint me!!!
I always dream about the Dalton Bond/80s Bond era so much, well done on this vid God, youve made yourself proud! The Bondverse film franchise have so many wasted opportunities, my opinion.
UPDATE: I've always known that Timothy Dalton would've become James Bond had either Roger Moore did his era like in our timeline (although after Sean Connery did On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Diamonds Are Forever) or had George Lazenby finished his 10 year tenure as Bond (starting out in On Her Majesty's Secret Service and dominating the 70s before ending it all in Moonraker).
For Your Eyes Only would've been an awesome film with Dalton in my opinion. Although Julian Glover would've played his role the same but more layered like Le Chiffre and Dr No. Robert Brown and Caroline Bliss would've started out in FYEO after the departures of Bernard Lee and Lois Maxwell as M and Moneypenny, to fit with revamp of the Bondverse film franchise from the moment the 1980s kicked in.
I'm with ya on Dalton in Octopussy, he and Maud Adams would've been great, the safari hunt with Dalton's Bond vs the goons would've got audiences like "WTF is he?! 00-Rambo?!"
A View to a Kill, the Goldfinger/Spy Who Loved Me/Skyfall chapter of the Dalton era. This film would've been a much more successful film critically and financially had Dalton appeared in it. He and Tanya Roberts would've been a believable pair, the fight with Timothy Dalton and Christopher Walken as 007 and Max Zorin would've been amazing, Dalton would show more of his stuntmanship in this film such as the firetruck chase scene.
The Living Daylights and Licence to Kill would still be the exact same films in our timeline. I'm wit ya on the fact that Licence would've been much successful had Dalton dominated the 80s earlier.
David Hedison would be Felix Leiter in his appearances in FYEO, Living Daylights (instead of John Terry) and Licence to Kill had he started out earlier in Diamonds are Forever (alt. Connery or Lazenby), Live and Let Die and Moonraker.

Timothy Dalton would have been an improvement, but the direction of John Glen would still be an issue. he's a workman-like director. Only rarely do the action scenes and editing pass what could be considered "okay." Glen did good work in FYEO, TLD, and in patches of LTK. The hunt in Octopussy would need more than a different actor. A View to a Kill was sloppy in many respects: editing, continuity, script, etc.

Indeed, but I do find that for TLD and LTK that they wudve a few more changes, less with LTK but more with TLD, that one wud have probably less jokes and puns, more darker scenes, the pet shop boys song to make the film darker, the 2 main villains wud be probably recasted for a Dalton movie, there wud be no lady in the yaut in the pre title sequence, and just overall it wudnt feel like a Roger Moore hangover.
LTK wud probably have less one jokes and they'd probably bring back Quarrel Jr, the song wud probably be darker once again, Della might not be as comedic, the ending wudnt be so funny but still maybe happy, the deleted scene where bond's watching TV wud probably be in the final cut, Felix might be recasted for sum1 to Daltons age, Felix might have lost an arm too to make things more gory, and the film probably wudve like the Bond Geek said, a big finally ending

Yeah FYEO was tailor made for Dalton apparently, however he turned it down before seeing a script, Cubby could have had a long talk to him about the project telling him that they are not going with the comical elements that were in Moore’s film, Octopussy could have worked with him, AVTAK, a tricky one, unless there are some major adjustments to the story, but I also feel that AVTAK could have worked with Pierce Brosnan, but he was busy with NBC and Remington Steele. Had Dalton never gotten the role, Lewis Collins could have nailed it, but Cubby didn’t like him.

    ⬆🖒 Broadly concur.
On balance, those three would have been relatively better than they actually are, particularly FYEO.
With Dalton as the new lead, a major _casting_ revision would have taken place. For starters, Lois Maxwell assuredly would have been replaced (regardless of her intentions) with one like Caroline Bliss or Michaela Clavell. As well, neither Lynn Holly Johnson nor Patrick Macnee would have appeared in their respective parts, in all likelihood.
Though I personally really would have preferred to have Tim star in all five John Glen-helmed 007/Bond films of the decade, my informed surmise is that he would have been in three films - or at most four - for he seemed not to be so emotionally attached to the role that Pierce apparently had been (Tim already had declined the role for 1969, whereas Pierce was at best chagrined at the fact that he would not be starring in more than four entries).

To be fair when people say 'so and so declined Bond' I think it's more a question of the actor being asked 'Do you want to be considered for it?' or they weren't formally in the running [for example Martin Campbell said only two actors were seriously considered for Bond in Casino Royale, Daniel Craig and Henry Cavill despite reports Hugh Jackman among others turned it down]. I think Dalton was probably asked 'do you want to audition'? but said no as he felt he was too young.

If only Timothy Dalton was bond from FYEO if Dalton had done 5 bonds he would have gone down as the best 007 ever, great video, but I do disagree with you on LTK it is definitely one of the best bond movies and most of that is because of Dalton, he did everything that Craig has done ,only Dalton did it so much better.

Dalton could have made 9 Bonds, 87 - 2003. If they had continued with the 'every 2 years' cycle.
He would have still have been younger than a AVTAK Moore if making a ninth. Dalton also aged well so may have still looked good.
However suspect he would have made 4-6 if there was no 6 year gap.

Goldfinger would possibly have been even bigger given audiences would have been waiting for years to see it. Or maybe it would have meant a different Bond in between Dalton and Brosnan?

@@adamcollins915 I honestly think Cubby [and probably Barbara and Micheal] did that was they wanted a new actor to relaunch the series [as they did later by letting Brosnan go]. Dalton's films weren't well regarded in the early 90's and films and more outlandish films were in vogue so Brosnan's lighter touch was what Bond needed at the time.
