    300% increase in firepower. Ya...I think you wanna check your math. Losing belt-fed M249 but adding full auto capacity to those that used to carry M4s does not equate to having 3x the firepower.

      @Trazyn_the_Infinite_40K 6 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      toshtenstahl they've done away with the m249. The new M27 IAR allows for full automatic fire with either a 30 or 150 round mag and select fire essentially augmenting the role of machine gunner and rifleman whilst dropping the extra weight. M240s will still be implemented although I hear that might be switched out with a mmg which resembles the MG4 and eventually the Ma Deuce with a weapon that is half the weight that fires the same caliber.( A sad day when that weapon is retired though)
      Even though I'm a POG I've had the pleasure of firing the .50 and the MMG/LMGs and think the m27 is a fucking great weapon.

      Alex Warnke Alex Warnke Eww, the M27 will never serve as a replacement for the 249, the Marine Corps themselves realized this and has since bought more 249s after adopting the M27 to serve as an interim IAR, I’ve always believed that the gun’s adoption was just a mere ploy to adopt an HK416 as the Marine Corps’ new standard issue rifle, and surely enough, it is.

    • @Trazyn_the_Infinite_40K
      @Trazyn_the_Infinite_40K 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Joshua B right, I misspoke and forgot to mention that they have been testing a 150 rd mag and thus far tests have been successful. But they are also in the process of finding suitable 50/100 rd mags at the moment as well. A fair objection.

    • @Trazyn_the_Infinite_40K
      @Trazyn_the_Infinite_40K 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      ChittinBricks it's far from standard issue. We're still using mostly M4's and the POG units are still using the older M16A4's. It has yet to be fully implemented in the FMF.

    • @parusol235
      @parusol235 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Alex Warnke Nah, I meant in the future, the M27 was a retarded idea to begin with as an IAR platform (I thought we learned about the downfall of the BAR), it was obvious that the M27 will replace the baseline legacy M16A4 and M4 as the standard issue rifle of the USMC. The Mahrins keep wanting new shit when they could’ve just RFI’d for an A1+ program like what the Army did for most of the M4s in service or reissue the A4 for grunts if they want to be unique.

  • @TheLAGopher

    The Marine Corps did leave open the possibility that the fourth member of the fireteam could return down the road.
    I think that could be when the Army deploys its next generation squad automatic weapon in a few years.
    I also believe the Corps still maintains the SAW in the battalion somewhere, maybe Weapons, maybe H&S
    but they are still there to be handed out (possibly to a returned Automatic Rifleman) if the Corps has an
    "Oh, shit" moment. when a million Chinese are coming down on the 1st MarDiv.

      Marines you might want to start by fixing the broken promotion system, where grunt cutting scores are artificially inflated because of the "available billets" for Cpls and Sgts, yet somehow nearly every grunt unit has Marines in leadership roles a T/O rank or even two higher than their pay grade. How can all the Cpl billets be "full" when the scores come out if so many of those billets are being filled by LCpls?
      If you're wanting to retain more (and crucially, BETTER) NCOs, start by reforming the promotion board system and get the senior leadership less concerned with how someone looks in chucks and how fast they can run 3 miles in sneakers and get the emphasis back to center on the "whole Marine concept": combat fit, skilled and competent at his/her MOS, puts into practice the leadership principles and traits. I admit that I EAS'ed in 2015 (after 9 years in), but I doubt three years has been enough to reduce the "Chongo" factor.

      “Trade away advantages of the m4 such as light weight and accuracy”
      The m27 IAR is both lighter and more accurate, being a sub minute of angle weapon. Of course it doesn’t have the same amount of firepower as a 249 but the point is everyone has an automatic weapon and if you use it correctly within the fireteam you can have pretty much constant fire, while being more adaptable than a big machine gun. Just like the tanks, it’s in an effort to make us more mobile and flexible. But please tell me more about how much smarter than the commandant you are.

    I don’t really understand why they need the M27 when M4s already have a full auto capability. The added weight and length of the M27 (as compared to the M4) in the maneuver element may also be an issue. Why not have 1 LAAW per fire team, and save the weight of the MAAWS for the 0351 sections? Save weight for the maneuver elements again. Idk.

    Sincere question: Why is the M320 replacing the M203? The M320 is a whole sperate weapon whereas the M203 is slung underneath the barrel of an M16 or M4. It's more to carry around and heavier right? So why is the M320 more beneficial than the M203?

    I’m an Army guy, so excuse my ignorance. Do Marines utilize a weapons squad at the platoon level?

    • @jeydub8541
      @jeydub8541 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Organization is different top to bottom. The infantry BN will have a WPNS Co and three Rifle Co's. Each rifle Co will have three rifle plt's and a WPNS plt. When rifle plt's are deployed, elements of WPNS plt or WPNS Co can be attached.
      No dedicated WPNS squad in a rifle plt. With variation based on T/O levels and mission.

      No, the squads are homogeneous. Each rifle company does have a weapons platoon with six M240s, though.

    Let's see -- The M249's that are in service date from long after I got out, and are still shot to shit because they've been in near-constant action with shitty field maintenance (welcome to the Suck) for at least ten years. Should we: a) refurbish what we have; b) buy new M249's; or c) find a replacement for the M249? I know! We'll do neither! Instead:
    We'll drop one Marine from the squad; give the remainder "product improved" M16A1's (which we are paying almost as much for, as a new M249, completely ignoring the idea of replacing one part, two screws, and a rebuild kit for the gas system - all of which are available on the open market) and bullshit the Call of Duty basement dwellers with Common Core math, while ignoring heat build-up completely; strip the Fire Team to three Marines; give the Squad Leader two people to directly babysit - because he certainly doesn't have anything better to pay attention to, because the other nine Marines can take care of themselves - issue a toy copter to a LCpl who doesn't know enough to watch his own ass, let alone the people around him because he's doing a specialist job; and issue an RPG-type weapon that should have been handed to the squad in 2003 (that apparently doesn't have a designated operator, and whose basic ammunition load will still need to be spread out through a shorter squad), all while insisting stridently that we are faster, lighter and more lethal as a result.
    In the immortal words of Robert Downey Jr. -- "Not a great plan."
    1984-1990 -- Thank GHU that I got out when I did. This is so embarrassing.

    Enemy just has to snipe out you're communications and surround you. You can't call for reinforcements. Then what?
    I think if you make every man a combat medic, communications, sniper, then operations control squad leader skills, so if the squad leader jets popped, every man can do the other guys job, making the entire unit elite. Add two more men and give them control of a predictor drone make them a add on stealth reconnaissance team of two men, so if the entire unit gets ambushed or surrounded, they call independently bomb targets as a unit to stay alive, that would reduce time of calling in a air strike from miles away from a base while then unit is deep behind enemy lines and potentially staying alive in a combat situation that comes down to split second decisions. Just an idea.

    Why don't people understand that losing a belt fed machine gun when nearly all rifles have full auto capability isn't really that big of a deal? If it were up to me I'd upgrade to something belt fed and newer than the m249 but 12 people even with 30 round mags is more suppressive power than one m249

    • @CountArtha
      @CountArtha 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Only if they're all firing in the same direction. With a four-man fire team, you can have four pairs of eyes covering 180 degrees with the M249 pointed towards the most dangerous side. Now there are only three guys in a fire team, and instead of having three M249s in a squad you have zero. They're giving up a lot of security at the objective by doing this.

    A question from a non-military guy.
    Where does the squad support weapon (machine gun) fit in all of this?
    How did this work in the old system, and hos is it supposed to work in the new one?
    Is the "automatic riffleman" the one responsible for that? Does that mean that one in three of the soldiers will be carrying an M249? (becuase that sunds a bit crazy).
