It still started up and drove after throwing a rod!!! Unbelievable. That says a lot about these old 2 valves
It threw TWO rods actually
Gramps just wanted his built engine lol
Haha! He was like, “Enough of this crap, gimme the good stuff!” 😂
Did u ever figure out what it wad
Thanks for blowing up the motor for our baselines. I'm thinking 7lbs would be a happy street truck with plenty of power
Wow! I can't believe it made it that far and finished the race! I dream to one day put a supercharger on my 2002 Supercrew FX4. I look forward to what's coming next!
Gramps had a solid run! cant wait to see what comes next! And that is an impressive time gramps put up while blowing up!
Those are rookie numbers. Happy Gilmore accomplished that feat no more than an hour ago
I'm running 10psi lightning swap on my 2003 4x4 with 215,000 miles on the clock. No issues at all
That 5.4 lived a much Fuller life than most 5.4 engine.
I thought that track looked familiar, then I saw the Rock Falls truck! Ive been there a handful of times.
Hey, at least you won!
And he even started and pulled into the garage under his own power. Not bad either for a big heavy 4x4 pickup.
If it makes you feel any better my 5.4 let go at 15psi.
love that truck even it blowing up u still won!!
He went out like a champ. I couldn't be prouder.
Now on to forged stuff...!
I have a 07 with a 5.4l 3 valve. I would never think of putting boost to one of these motors. They have plastic timing chain guides
Did the same to my 97, non turbo, blew up. Now 5.4 32V, from a 99 Lincoln Navigator.
Good luck!
I am surprised that drove into the garage , good luck with rebuild!!
I’m sure your time would have been maybe in the high 12’s without the front drive line engaged. That’s a lot for that stock engine to have to deal with. Between 14psi and torque to front and back wheels plus (like someone else said) the ring gap. Impressive though! Kudos to gramps!
Whoops!! Needed ring gap! Love the truck man. Get another motor and keep on rolling
RIP to the old gramps, excited for the new gramps!!
Oof - well, now at least we can see the built engine installed and see how much more you can get out of it.
DOHC with forged internals this time?
Good thing you have that built block. Can’t wait to see what it can do with a built motor.
My old vw was 3 inch off the ground it had a tow hook.... Towed a f150 out the ditch up by peace river ab in February years ago..... Never underestimate a tdi swap.
Woot woot I guessed really close
Jeff, you actually won the hat! I need your email address so I can reach out to you about getting it sent. Congrats!
@@AutoDetour I reached out on Facebook as well
Man I wanna know what went wrong. Please do a teardown video
Idk what it is but you are good at making youtube videos, most others try too hard, you got that x-factor, keep doing these videos, they are interesting. Sucks about your truck though, I guess it's all part of the hobby.
Sad… but its nice to know the stock block can probably hold 10 psi and maybe stay reliable? Im looking forward to the future of gramps!! I wonder if you plan on upgrading to the R100 trans?
Yeah, some 5.4s came with the 4r100 but they had to be max tow and not Screw. My 98 5.4 4x4 has one, 3 door cab. My stock 4r100 lived under a 15psi eaton swap (10 lower/2.8 upper) for a couple of years before I had a tranny built for it.
*Starts gramps with no oil*
Can’t wait for the built engine
When my 5.4 went out it ran just enough to get to the side of the road. About the same distance as you did from the trailer to the garage.
brother what did you expect? wicked video.
the "dires ire" at 1:41 told me something bad was about to happen
I was nervous when you said you were going to 14 PSI. Back in the day when I was putting together a turbo setup for my 97 4.2 v6 all of the info and advice I got was to keep the PSI to 8 or less with stock internals for long term reliability. Go big or go home I guess. At least you got the built block in the pipeline.
Did you turbo it
@@jasonjr2500 no. Truck got totalled in a crash before I had all the parts and cash needed to finish the project.
@@pc4189 dang I been thinking about doing a turbo and tuner on my 4.2 but I'm afraid to blow it up because it got over 350k
@@jasonjr2500 my advice.keep the boost to 6 PSI. If you want go big then save more money and get forged internals.
Sooooo, you should go get a 4 valve from and aviator or navigator.
How did you stop the shuddering in the torque converter? Thanks in advance
What are the plans for the built motor?
My 5.4s timing chain was loose for months finally started to wear a hole in the cover…took it off-roading to send it off and the thing cracked the whole cover then drove an hour home with 0 oil 😭
Gramps 2.0 coming this summer !
I would've thought you would've been a lil quicker that 13sec in the 1/4...
Idk hoping you would've been in 12's
can new block take it?
The old powdered rods and pistons at it again
😂 or the factory head gaskets!
Nice, build it now and turn it up.👍
People talk shit about the 5.4 but that old 2 valve can really take a beating. Love my 02 F150 7700. All I've done is the gotts intake mod, muffler delete and highflow cats. It sounds awesome
I took way more abuse than I was expecting!
@@AutoDetour it's truly amazing. I have a feeling this engine would stay reliable for 100k+ miles if the boost was kept at 5-8 lbs.
Does it have a cast iron block tho?
Excuse me sir what is your engine management system
was that on e85?
Noooo Gramps’ we’ll time for that built motor!
Just found this channel. Sorry you blew it up. Time for a coyote swap!!
Let's see the carnage
That truck was no way ready for the track, what were you trying to prove?
👍love it 😁 14lbs 🤘blows motor still beats other guy! Put air ride in it then it’ll fit trailer lil more 🤷🏻♂️😎
I’d like to buy your turbo kit if your still have it
Sigh knew that wouldn’t last forever
Rebuild and go! It's normal.
did well pushing heavy truck considering that's not a lightning long block pushing double the factory output
I agree. And we were well over double the factory HP
Blown any plugs on that Triton yet?
I do wanna 5.4 swap my old 4x4 97 f150 4.6 I’ve had for years
Not worth it.. the 4.6 is an amazing engine
Well done Gramps...
Now it sounds like a true v8 lol
When we’re you gunna decide to shut it down ?
If you wouldn't put the boots up at 14 PSI then that probably would not happen cuz I watched a lot of those videos already from that truck selamawit stays under 14 then takes it pretty good are you going to put a new engine in there
Rip gramps
It’s ok I blew up my 5.4 also but when they are both back up and running let’s race they should be the same setup
How did it blow up?
Would love to see a 5.4 3v build. There’s lots of 2v and 4v but almost nothing on them
I feel like the reason you dont see a lot of 3v is because of the reliability of the 5.4 3v.. imo its a horrible motor. Spark plugs blowing out… timing failure.
@@RevokedYT The updated spark plugs work perfectly and almost no one still has the originals in their truck. The timing won’t be an issue with a new oil pump but even stock they last plenty long enough with good maintenance.
My 05 has 220k miles running strong with new spark plugs, ignition coils, and alternator but nothing else touched. They got a bad reputation early on but now you can find them dirt cheap in comparison to other V8’s that won’t last half as long.
@@michaelw6481 wow im impressed. Have you had any problems with your cam phaser? That annoying ticking noise that isn’t the manifold leaking.
@@RevokedYT No problems with that but I do hear the timing chain rattle on startup. It will need new tensioners at some point but hopefully by then I’m ready to throw a supercharger on it too!
3v tritons are junk stay away from them
Damn, only 1 pass. I guess I’m not turbocharging my 5.4 3v Expedition.
Yeah 3valves are more shitty than 2 valve 5.4's.
"I've won... But at what cost?"
I can't believe it! Nobody saw this coming.
Should have went supercharger.
But it still starts up
🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯holy crap!
Note to self, doubling the power of a bone stock 5.4l is a bad idea.. I'll be sure to keep mine under 10psi Max.
Lol! Oh that was more than double, but yes keep it under 10 if you want it to live a long time.
You can triple the HP on a 5.3L vortec/LS engine. These engines can handle a lot of HP. The 5.3 vortec/LS engine's with a big cam, headers and a good tune on a stock engine you should be at 400 to 425 HP N/A engine. These engines can hold a lot of boost and make a lot of HP/TQ on a bone stock engine that is awesome.
Facebook marketplace: great truck, needs muffler fluid replaced
It must have let go right before the 1/4 mile ended, should have been a tick faster than that....
I think the converter is hurt. It was slow off the line, but went like stink in the 2nd half.
@@AutoDetour did you happen to run Draggy data at the track?
@@AutoDetour time for a 6R80 swap!
