    Incredible failure point. Sorry for that extra expense.

    The fact you are rebuilding it yourself is still saving a lot of money. That was a good find.

      Thank you… I’m still happy to get this thing rebuilt. Even though I could have cheaped out.

    Great video. Thanks for making it. I'm doing this job on the vehicle. Pulled the valve body to repair a blown retainer clip for the overdrive servo. The 23 accumulator just fell out. Question, what is the trick to get the 23 accumulator spring and retainer back into place when the trans is on the vehicle (working on my back). I have tried everything I can think of and i can't get the retainer to hold in place long enough to get the valve body back on.

    • @DrivingIntelligence
      @DrivingIntelligence  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Excellent question, what I did was gently bend the retained tabs out so it had to be pressed in (not loose fit), and I also used alot of Vaseline to hold it in place.

    I replaced the 1/2 accumulator springs in the 4R70 in my 95 Mark VIII Lincoln. They had a too soft shift.
    I changed the trans settings in my 2002 F150 with a Superchips programmer and it shifted too hard. I thought I had changed it back to stock but didn't. Anyway, I bought new springs for the 1/2 accumulator and never used them. You can have them if you want. I'll mail them to you no charge. I just hate to throw stuff like that away.
    part # 1L3Z-7F284-BA and 1W7Z-7F284-AA and 1L3Z-7F284-AA
    The Mark VIII 4R70 had 2 springs and were known to break. The truck has 3 springs.

    So ,i checked for broken snap ring. Checked for debris in valve body. Changed solenoid, changed whole valve body and every sensor. Changed accumulator. Still not working what the hell should i do im lost.

      Sorry for the trouble you’re having, what exactly is your problem?

    • @cjc1216
      @cjc1216 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @DrivingIntelligence with overdrive on in drive it will go from first to second, but at or around 25 to 30 mph or 2500 rpm it will skip third and seemingly get thrown into neutral until speed and revs come back down where it will again catch second gear. With overdrive off it will go from first to second and then remain in second but the rpm will continue to climb indefinitely. The only other thing I can think of is my band is shot. This thing is kicking my butt.

    • @DrivingIntelligence
      @DrivingIntelligence  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Do you have any diagnostic trouble codes? As I’ve mentioned in some of my videos, the loss of third gear could be many failure points. The 2-3 accumulator, forward direct drum failure, clutch failure, valve body issues, and maybe even electrical issues. Everything is serviceable with the transmission in the engine except the forward direct drum. That involves a complete disassembly of the transmission.

    • @cjc1216
      @cjc1216 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @DrivingIntelligence no trouble codes , ive replaced everything I could without a full transmission drop. I've given in and ordered a rebuilt transmission, i don't have the time, knowledge or tools to keep fighting this battle ha. I appreciate your insights though very kind of you to reply and attempt to help my sorry behind.

    I got a 2002 FX4 5.4 that shifts when supposed to but shifts really rough from 2-3rd. I wonder if this is also my issue. I am at 130,000 miles.

    • @DrivingIntelligence
      @DrivingIntelligence  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      My initial guess is that you have a different problem. My issue allowed fluid to pass around the accumulator preventing the shift to occur. Has it always done this or a new issue?

      @@DrivingIntelligence We owned it since new and it started happening a little over a year ago.

      Have you checked diagnostic trouble codes? If it were my truck, I would replace all the shift accumulators and rebuild the valve body. Also, you might want to consider replacing the shift solenoids and possibly the EPC solenoid. That’s as far as you can go without pulling the transmission.

    Hi, is that shift kit equivalent to a J mod or better. I have a 4.6 2v. And I had a Jmod kit done on it.

    • @DrivingIntelligence
      @DrivingIntelligence  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I performed the J-Mod and the shift kit together and ended up with an overly harsh 1-2 shift. I'd say pick one or the other. The shift kit comes with additional components that will resolve many of the weak points of the 4R70W and I trust the company that makes the kit.

    Well, think of it this way;
    You're spending all this money NOW, true, but you eventually would've had to eventually anyway. So, it's better you rebuild it now instead of it leaving you stranded. Yes, the 4R70W is a stout transmission that definitely punches above its weight class, but anything mechanical can and will eventually break down.
