Incredible music. I've only emulated ff1 on msx using the default settings. This is incredible to hear. Thanks

The MIDI data is generated in real-time from game's OPLL data via the MIDI-PAC2 cartridge. This cartridge is not emulated so only real hardware can do this.

@@superdeadite so it's translating everything on the fly even the sfx. I'm just wondering if you could assign the sfx to play a separate bank since the midi-pak gives the option for extra banks.

@@ratix98 Yes, but we are limited by the constraints of OPLL and how the game uses it. FF1 shares SFX with the Drum channel, so the best option would be to mute the MIDI drums, and just use the original OPLL drums/sfx. But for this video I really wanted to show how it sounds with the PLG150-DR. Every game is a little different with quirks to work around. Oddly enough one of my absolute favorite results was Sonic 1 (SMS): th-cam.com/video/ZHZUP16OLiE/w-d-xo.html If you want to learn more about MIDI-PAC2, please see my guide: th-cam.com/video/xZKsuRtTHQw/w-d-xo.html

So are you playing the sound files or the game directly to the Yamaha mu? Can you do that for snes?

The MSX MIDI-PAC2 cartridge reads OPLL instrument data and outputs MIDI data in real time. This is possible because OPLL uses hard coded FM instruments in ROM. Afaik, no such device exists for SNES, and I doubt it ever will as SNES basically just loads custom samples into it's DSP, so instruments would have to be defined and updated manually.

would i be able to do this with a MFR cart and a Yamaha MSX2? or do i need the fmpac repro?

You will need an FM-PAC or clone (OPLL) for the game to use full music. If you want to use MIDI like I am here, then you will also need a MIDI-PAC2 and most likely a slot-expander to connect everything.

I knew of the MSX Turbo R (I was getting obsessed with an English translation for Illusion City) though am fairly surprised this came out in 1994 when the PC would have been released. Around this same time, the Sharp X68000 would have recreated the first Castlevania, but the main difference with FF1 apart from the music is the character sprites. Strangely it seems to have a close-up view compared to the NES.

MSX Final Fantasy was licensed from Square and developed entirely by Microcabin. Microcabin put their games on various systems, but MSX was their most profitable system by far.

turboR came out in 1990 and Final Fantasy in 1989. But yeah, well into PC era.

Yes, it is easy to find, but be aware the speed patch can cause some game breaking bugs. Hopefully they will be fixed in the future.

@@abeker When using both performance and English patches, save data seems to get buggy. Garland never spawns in the first dungeon breaking the game. The author of the translation patch says this is caused by the performance patch. His words, not mine. Either way thanks for your work!

@@abeker Really? Excellent. I have been using the image from file-hunter archive for the game disk. Hmm... I wonder if the user disk image I have is the problem? Please send me your images so I can test again.

How were you able to write the game to a virtual floppy disk? I did that with an external USB floppy emulator connected to a Raspberry Pi running BlueberryMSX (BlueMSX for the Raspberry Pi). It resulted in the overworld screen looking like a buggy, glitched up mess. When I run the same rom on BlueMSX Live however, the overworld screen was normal and the game was playable. Is it a problem with how the game should be written?

I just load the images by virtual FDD driver for my Padial SD interface cartridge.
