    Now that all the FINAL FANTASY PIXEL REMASTER games are released, we can talk about them. I was incredibly curious about how all of these played, especially my absolute favorite of all time, Final Fantasy 6. The big thing here is determining if these are the DEFINITIVE editions to play or not.

    As a modder for the Pixel Remasters, there's also plenty of mods for the PC versions to be found. If you want the classic character sprites, for example, because the new ones seem a bit too unshaded and bright, or the FF5 and 6 overworlds are way too bright and clash with the new town and dungeon tileset improvements, we've got mods for that. These games are made on the Unity engine, so they're a lot easier to mess with than the old iso and rom files of before.

      I have a lot of respect for the modding community that continues to help modern remakes more accessible while simultaneously showing tribute to the original games. That respect, however, doesn't carry over to SE in many places (though some things were improved). If fans are the ones spending their own energy to be the labor of love that's indicative of the original titles, if they're the ones truly turning the PR projects into something I would want to play--then why would someone praise SE for having their work corrected?
      Again, because I see the angry comments forming already, I'm not saying the PR games are the worst thing I've ever seen. I'm saying that the fans are doing a better job at creating a lasting experience than the companies getting paid to do what these modders end up having to do for us.

    "DIFFICULTY" on FF6 is increased if you increase battle speed. it has NO effect on actual battle speed, its a PURE difficulty slider. This is probably why you were dying more often.
    "Battle Speed" changes difficulty, because it has no effect on the speed of battles, but instead, the speed stat of the enemy, giving it more or less turns per your turn. if you increase it, they attack you far more often, while your turn amount doesnt go up to match. it also effects how often poison ticks to hurt you.

    The other cool thing about the opera scene is that it's voiced NOT JUST in English in Japanese, but in EVERY LANGUAGE THE GAME IS IN! I was playing in Spanish and the whole opera is voiced in Spanish too! That was so cool!
    I guess in the English version, she didn't sound like an opera singer, and that was *intentional* because Celes would NOT have been an opera singer, but just someone who can maybe sing.

    • @gubruikertje
      @gubruikertje ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I do not understand this reasoning at all. I do not know a single opera or musical where the characters are supposed to be professional singers. The whole point is that we are supposed to enjoy the music, so only the best singers actually get casted. It shouldn't be any different for this scene.

    • @Zaleos
      @Zaleos ปีที่แล้ว +35

      @@gubruikertje They mean that in the context of the game, Celes, the character who sings in the opera, is not a singer. She was infiltrated as a singer, in order to protect the actual proffesional singer who was being targeted by someone. • @gubruikertje

      @@Zaleos Well I suppose that makes sense but isn't she supposed to successfully impersonate a singer? We aren't assuming everyone is tone deaf in universe are we?

    • @Zaleos
      @Zaleos ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@gubruikertje That much I wouldn't know. I guess for artistic and enjoyment purposes it'd make sense if it sounds as good as possible. I haven't played this version yet so no idea how it sounds myself. Personally I wont mind much either way, I'll still love the game anyway xD

    • @jfast8256
      @jfast8256 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @@gubruikertje She didn't take her place because she sounds like the opera singer. She took her place because she LOOKS like the opera singer. Setzer wasn't going to be in the audience so he wouldn't be able to hear her sing which is why she didn't need to have the best voice. You can actually fail that scene, the impres.... whatever he was called, gets mad and tells you "you have x more chances". I think this alludes to everyone in the audience knowing it's fake, like special viewings designed to draw Setzer out to kidnap Celes. You have only so much time of keeping it "shut down" before they have to reopen.
      Lore wise, it's a good choice and makes sense. She is a General, not some Opera Floozy. She needs only learn the part to keep the Opera going long enough for Setzer to kidnap her instead of the actual Opera Singer.

    This is a nice rundown, but I'm kinda surprised there's no mention of the bugs, which vary in severity. I only watched Jared and Yunalesca play VI, but there's that bug where the enemies stop doing anything when all your characters are frozen. There was that one where Setzer stands in the same spot as other party members when you re-recruit him. I saw a couple videos about one where if you exit Albrook through a certain tile in the World of Ruin, you end up back in the World of Balance with no way to progress or fix the game, which was unfortunate for this guy who saved without realizing what had happened. They should have fixed these before releasing the game.

    • @armorvil
      @armorvil 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They fixed the bigger ones but still need to patch some in-battle softlocks. I've had one today when a Destroyer rhino in the magitek factory used Reraise on itself (in the original it can't because it doesn't have enough MP, but they gave it enough in this new version) and revived as an invisible and untargettable monster. The battle stopped progressing at that time so I couldn't even run or get a game over by killing my own team, I had to kill the FF6.exe process.

    You know, it's kind of funny that you mention how good these games look, when I actually thought otherwise. Perhaps it's just me being a pixel art snob, but all of the character sprites look almost amateurish to me, which is odd because, as you mentioned, the environment and enemy spritework is, for the most part, pretty solid. It's just the characters, which are what you're going to be looking at and dealing with for the entire duration of the game, that are off. Seems to me that the contrast isn't high enough, resulting in a flat, almost muddied look, despite there being more shades used than in the originals. I guess it all boils down to personal preference in the end, and the character sprites that we got aren't necessarily *bad* per se, it just seems like such a baffling difference when you compare it to a lot of the enemy sprites, which very clearly have higher contrast in their color palettes and look so much better because of it.

    • @melliel2957
      @melliel2957 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I'd say a lot of the flaws of the character sprites are less subjective than objective. If I ignore my plethora of nitpicks against them, I'd still consider them pretty bad for the reasons you've mentioned. The oversaturation and brightness of every color either gives nothing space to itself aside from the dark outline that contrasts far too much. It all just ends up feeling like a mess of colors lazily implying the vaguest possible idea of what the sprite is meant to be.
      This issue becomes worse on characters with a lot of colors. So much visual noise is bound to give someone a headache after a play session.
      Not every character sprite is that bad. In fact there are some of them that are actually really good, but I have to go out of my way to search for them to confidently say they exist.

    • @lukebytes5366

And don't tell me "I'm honest because I didn't experience any of this" since anyone can see in this video that the games aren't smooth. I liked you awhile back ProJared but you're acting way too much like a square-enix employee these days. There ARE more problems than just "they're not on consoles, durr". The last patch for FF6 was more than 10 days ago and I experienced another softlock today (they gave sufficient MP to the Destroyer rhino monster in the Magitek Factory so his Reraise works, but when it revived it was invisible and the battle stopped progressing). And it's just one of the many examples of new bugs they created with this version.

    I have a few problems with the pixel remasters. Most of which I could forgive.
    -Changing the difficulty and giving no option to have the original difficulty (a bit strange for something claiming to be the original experience. For example the experience and gold values in FF1 are not even close to original)
    -the text (at least that's easy to fix, and honestly not a huge deal to begin with.)
    -I have mixed feelings about the brightened sprite remakes, especially in FF6 I feel like it robs some of the atmosphere of the game.
    -But the one which I absolutely can't forgive and why I would struggle to play these over the original is the judder/microsutter, it drives me crazy. I know it's not uncommon in modern games, but the old versions are buttery smooth.

    I think the pixel remasters were necessary as a way to ease in newer FF fans into the older games of the series.
    I'm a living example of this. Nowadays a lot of casual fans don't have enough time to sink into one of those games because there are so many more awesome games coming out all the time, meaning that removing pretty much all of the need to grind for levels and money was a big help, especially for people like me who never could get into those games in the past because of those roadblocks.
    Also, to me, not always having a minimap for smoother dungeon and worldmap navigation is a deal breaker in regards to those old jrpgs. Pixel remasters also fixed this.
    The target audience for those games was clearly newer fans instead of people who were already familiar with those classics. And that being said, I think the games did their job wonderfully. I've played from 1 through 4 and so far have enjoyed them all, even 2, the game that the entire fanbase hates and says it's the worst of the franchise.
    Maybe they could've added in a hard mode for longtime fans, or maybe even an option to change the sprites to the original form for people who don't like the new ones. But so far those are the only criticisms I have of them.

      Wish they did the same thing for the first 3 Dragon Quest games on Switch. I finally got to play them again after all these years, but I had to use a walkthrough for all 3 of them, worse is those were from the SNES/GBC versions, so of course no one bothered making new ones for those remasters as of today. I was still able to beat DQ 1and 2 and started DQ 3 recently, but yeah the lack of ACTUAL QoL improvements on those 3 would have made even more accessible to everyone.

    • @theazureknight9399
      @theazureknight9399 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@martinde-serres8724 Oh, I've heard that the original 3 DQ games were particularly hardcore even among other old NES jrpgs. I've been planning to play them one day because I loved DQ 11, but the knowledge that the switch remakes have no qol improvements is kind of a bummer.

      @@theazureknight9399 I said they have them, just not the more essential ones. They were based on the Japanese mobile versions, so they got things like updated visuals, increases in exp and gold per fights, better translations, etc. What was mostly missed were the minimaps for smoother dungeon explorations and battle animations for enemies and bosses, but overall they're still great to play.

      Which would you say is better? PSP emulation or Pixel Remaster

    • @MattAkiyama1
      @MattAkiyama1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrDurant123 For FF 1 and FF4 the PSP versions for sure. Everything else the pixel remaster for sure. But you won't go wrong with the pixel remaster versions of 1 and 4.
      The PSP version of FF3 is also one of the best ways to play the 3D version of the game. Like FF4, the 3D version of FF3 is just as relevant as the 2D version, you'll want to play both versions. FF3's 2D version is the pixel remaster, although heavily based on the NES game so it's a lot different from the 3D version. So FF3 and FF4 both have two games to play. If you wanted to go entirely with the pixel remaster for all FF games 1-6, you won't really have any regrets, they're generally good. You can even add some mods to make it a bit better for yourself.

    The pixel artwork is magnificent. Got the entire bundle on my iPad Pro now -- an excellent way to play it with the quality screen. Kind of an odd omission to not include controller support though, when most of the other mobile games were among the first iPad games to support controllers. Not a deal breaker though, as it's final fantasy -- point and click or the virtual thumbstick works fine.

    One nit-pick I have with the FF6 pixel remaster is how they removed the text bar customizations (goodby demon chocobo) and also the ability to order your magic by type. I know this is a small nit-pick, but why would they remove those?

  • @sydhamelin1265

    I definitely noticed the remaster of VI is more difficult. I think it's that enemies use their special abilities more consistently. I got hammered around a few times, then did a lot of grinding to make it more survivable. But I'm playing it very differently than normal. Like, I'm actually buying potions and using them.

    • @UltimaKeyMaster
      @UltimaKeyMaster 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think 3's classes are improved, it's just there's no longer any limiter on switching Jobs. The NES game had a currency you spent on switching, the 3D game gave a job sickness period whenever you switched that varied in length depending on the type of job, this version has neither of those so you can switch as much as you want with no penalty.
      In my eyes, this is the *only* objective improvement these remasters have on the gameplay side. Maybe the mini-map and diagonal movement too, but just for fighting.

      Funnily enough, he actually got that detail wrong, Cyan's Skills were changed to work like that in the previous Mobile Version already and the Remaster just carried that over.
      As for FF3 Classes, off-hand I know they gave Dark Knight Bladeblitz (a free AoE Attack Command), gave Rangers Barrage, and rebalanced some Class Stats, for example Red Mages now have better physical Stats.

    The biggest issue I have is they left out the GBA bonuses. Extra dungeons, extra jobs (FF5), and extra magicite (FF6). Which a lot of people theorize it's so they can nickel and dime us with DLC later on. Which I would be surprised if modern Squeenix *DIDN'T* do.

    the sprites could be better but I am fine with their new choice, but what I do really dislike is the font type (I know there's mods but this would be a deal breaker if they release the pixel remasters to consoles) and the huge empty space on the battlefield. On the bright side the music is worth owning the games alone, they really nailed with that aspect.

So for me it feels like a lot of lost for me since i'm loosing that extra content. I would love to see an update or perhaps dlc to implement the extra stuff back into the pixel remaster and of course a console port as well.
