    Definitely a winner on price/performance and I like the uncluttered front. But one thing I don't like about wall-wart powered scopes is the loss of line triggering. That's always been the fastest way to see if the wiggles on the screen are line related.

    Neat little machine. Might be a fun mod to hide a power bank inside and use a simple current steering circuit to connect it. In any case, a pretty respectable scope for students and folks just getting started on electronics.

    Hopefully it has much better performance at low voltages and high frequencies. Have the "Tablet" but it is limited for low level signals. It integrates multiple sweeps to acquire a high frequency, so not useful for single events at high sweep speeds or high speed data. This is in relation to the tablet. Hopefully this scope has much better performance. Love the tablet within it's limitations. High amplitude signals under 20 MHZ work fine.

    Specs show scope has a built in DDS sig generator, this might be usable as probe calibrate function. But where is external trigger input?

  • @RSP13

    FEEDBACK 1: Please FNIRSI, stop hiding the base-line noise floor. Every time the signal get below 32 mVpp it is swapped by a fake flat line. Please FNIRSI, change this in a firmware update.
    FEEDBACK 2: I hope that in a future firmware update the vertical Sensitivity could be reduced from 50mV/div (the current base-line noise floor appears to be low enough).

    • @mbaksa
      @mbaksa ปีที่แล้ว

      Feedback 1 - wow, is that what those "interruptions" are? Thanks for sharing this. I thought my scope (1013D) had failed. 1014D has the same issue? I was thinking of buying it (I want USB powered oscilloscope), but if it has the same problem, no way (that was one of the reasons why I was thinking about buying a new oscilloscope - for some stuff I can't use 1013D because of that flat lining).

      @@englishrupe01 they are great as long as you don't expect to much from it. I watched a review of the tablet oscilloscope by EEVBLOG and he looked at it as if it was a $1000 scope! But I think that he missed the point of it! It's a budget scope which a lot of people can get their foot in the door with! Especially if you plan to be working with audio frequency!
      My first scope was a small pocket thing which was the cheapest that I could afford at the time, it's a beautiful device in it's solid aluminium case and it worked well for audio work but the only problem that I found with it was it's 2" screen!
      The next scope I got was an older 20Mz CRT type which was also really good but it didn't display any information on the screen apart from the waveform! I eventually got the tablet oscilloscope and I'm really happy with it, the FFT function is a bonus!
      This new desktop scope/function generator seems to be also good! I thought that it looked a little bit on the sterile side of things but I got used to it very quickly! It doesn't have to many different colours all over the place, even though I don't have it, by the end of the video I felt like I have been using it for some time as I could easily remember where what is to make an adjustment! I think that is an important part of any test equipment! I feel that it's something that all new equipment has lost from how they used to be made, when you needed to make an adjustment, you found the control in what seemed like it's natural position! The old designer's probably put in a lot more effort than we realize, the new manufacturers seem to have lost that! Everything seems to be buried in a menu somewhere! The days of just reaching out to make an adjustment without looking but just by muscle memory is becoming a thing of the past!
      I remember when you could have a car stereo which had a lot of features and every single one of those features could be accessed from the face of the unit and you could literally operate it without looking! That's not the case any more either... I worry about the world that my grandchildren are going to grow up in! My son has a VCR, cassette deck, DAT machine, turntable, vinyl records and so on! He even likes the music that I grew up with when I was his age!
      If this world is supposed to be getting better, why are the kids who get exposure to the old days not wanting to take part in it? There's nothing better than being able to hold your music in your hands! Why do my MP3's have to feel like a phone? Yeah I don't know, but what I do know is that I have enough equipment to cover the next 3 generations of my family lol. A time with come when Vintage equipment will be litterely impossible to get ahold of! There won't be enough for everyone and those who are selling are going to be asking for rediculas prices! Some of the stuff that I have was actually considered junk once! I know, because someone actually threw it out, but today it's already worth something, just imagine seeing a Sony ES DAT machine with it's wood panel side's sitting on the curbside! Even a broken one is selling for $300 on eBay! I wonder who would such a thing? I wonder if they will realise what they gave away somewhere some time in the near future?
      Hang on to what you have! You never know, either your children will thank you for it or if they don't appreciate what you are going to leave behind, it could turn out to be a retirement fund!

    I love my tablet version of this! And this one looks interesting too!
    I thought that it looked a little sterile at the beginning but by the end of the video, I got used to it and it now feels very uncluttered! I like it.
    Does it say how to compensate the probes in the manual? Or are you just supposed to use the square wave of the built-in generator somehow?
    And does the generator do sweep functions?
    Also, when you open it up, can you have a look and see if there's a place to connect a battery? They might have either used the circuit from the tablet version or maybe just included the battery circuit but not the battery!
    While being able to run off a USB charger, from what I have seen on Diode Gone Wild, they very rarely are isolated from mains AC... It's better to have the battery built-in than carry around a USB power bank!
    I purchased the tablet version after seeing your review and now I'm looking into this!

  • @geirendre
    @geirendre 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    It sure has some compelling features, but also seems to miss some more advanced features.
    Moving the PSU out of the scope is something other manufacturers should consider too.
    But why they chose to make the [GEN] key BLUE when the BNC for the generator is marked GREEN???
    And not put it together with the other keys that belong to the generator...

    • @boots7859
      @boots7859 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like its their first non-portable device, and its possible it was a feature added at the tail-end as a no/low-cost function? There are nits to pick, however its a $150 low-end device. As he said, if you want/need advanced functions you should be look at units that are 3-5x the price.

      I saw in specs it states has a protection “intelligent anti burning feature” that what they literally called it. Claims if you forgot to put probe in 10x while measuring high voltage won’t let the magic smoke out? I wonder how true that is seeing how they lied on the other specs? The one thing is the fact it has no internal power supply so is isolated in that regard. Both channels are sharing the same ground plane so not fully isolated like a fluke Scopemeter.

    • @MikeSadlerAU
      @MikeSadlerAU ปีที่แล้ว

      For my use case, (comparing an input with its output, or subsequent power amp stages) in a HT (400-800V), the equipment ground will (must!!!) be common anyway, so the common ground is no downside?

    Lots of features, but wth didn't they include wave smoothing?? That may be one of the worst looking square wave signals generated by a signal generator that I've ever seen.
    Also, why didn't you put a higher freq signal through it so we could see how well (or not so well) the signal appears at or near 100 mHz?
    The probe only works on signals from 6 mHz to 100 mHz? What do use on signals < 6 mHz?

    • @walter....
      @walter.... 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Switchable 1x / 10x probes work only up to 6 MHz in 1x mode. The 100 MHz bandwidth is for the 10x mode.

    • @ab_ab_c
      @ab_ab_c 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@walter.... Thanks. From what I've read online, the bandwidth is supposedly only good to ~1/5 of the lowest signal, so a 100 mHz bandwidth is really only good for signals of 20 mHz or less.
      Do you know if that is true?

    • @ajlenze8
      @ajlenze8 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ab_ab_c I think you're confusing bandwidth and sampling speed. Notice that of the true 1G samples/sec scopes, the highest bandwidth they advertise is 200MHz. Actually (and I admit I've just recently learned this), bandwidth is not directly related to sampling speed, as the bandwidth is the 3dB point of the low pass filter on the front end of the scope. Although this filter is totally different circuitry than the A/D converter(s) that determines the sampling speed, in practice, scope makers design them at your 1/5 (or 1/10 or 1/20) ratio. My guess is that they do this because sampling too high of a bandwidth at too low a sampling speed would result in nonsense being displayed and maybe the A/D just wouldn't work.

    • @ab_ab_c
      @ab_ab_c 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ajlenze8 My understanding is that a high sampling rate just provides more data points for a signal so that you can zoom in on it to get better details of the signal.
      I agree with you that too slow of a sample rate taken on too high of a frequency will likely result in poor resolution when zooming in to look more closely at a high freq signal.
      I would also add that I am aware that the Nyquist sampling rate must be two times the highest frequency of the input signal. (e.g. if the input signal has a high-frequency component of 1 kHz, then the sampler must sample at least 2 kHz, or the signal might alias.). And while that makes sense, I have read somewhere online that I can't find at the moment that stated something like this "choose a sample rate that 5 times the bandwidth of the oscilloscope to give you a high-enough sampling rate to capture the details of your signal, including its frequency of oscillation and the rise times of your waveforms. You need a sample rate that will provide enough detail to see any unexpected glitches or anomalies."

    • @walter....
      @walter.... 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ab_ab_c It's true that if you want to see the exact waveform of a non-sinusoidal signal you need a higher bandwidth than the frequency of the signal, in order to get the higher harmonics too.
      On the other hand, if you have a sinusoidal signal, or just want to see that you have a signal and don't need to see the exact waveform and amplitude, you'll be able to use a 100 MHz oscilloscope up to 200 MHz or even more.

    In my experience, a lot of cheap stuff powered off of 5v USB is just not built to any kind of safety standard.
    Not to mention you are kind of relying on the USB power to not be coming from a badly implemented switching power supply. Which for a couple bucks per unit on most of those, I wouldn't trust.
    Alo, you have to trust that the bargain basement scope has some good power isolation.
    I would not recommend this scope to anyone who is going to play with high voltages or currents.
    Really a Rigol 1054z is not much more.
    It's kind of misleading to say it is either Keysight or R&S vs cheap danger scope.

      No, I checked mine and the little (better than Mr. Wong said!) printed manual that comes with every unit, and the pdf is on the F website under Support. Does not say anything on GEN amplitude setting. Looks like 1.48V P-P in some review waveform displays. Not sure on Output Z but you can measure that the same EE Tech way as always, select a lower freq like 100KHz and then take a linear pot (full size, not a trimpot) and simply crank down the resistance until a hi Z meter shows 1/2 the open-circuit voltage! This is a much nicer instrument than Mr. Kerry Wong presents it. I LOVED the practical and positive tone of Mr. LEARNELECTRONICS, AND saved BOTH of his 1014D Presentations. BTW I do have a REAL 150MHz TEK 2445 scope, but it needs a full recap with the parts I ordered per a nice repair article - the German WIMA plastic line caps shorted and it SMOKED but is repairable. 73's, Hilary W4HDL

      One area that they could have cut corners on is the markup. Siglent and Rigol get the amazon shaft of 40% which is how they move most of their product. They also have a 50% price for universities. By selling direct for now this scope is cheep, but since they have made a workable product we will probably see it appear on Amazon shortly causing this price point to disappear. If it lands at $300 it will still be an upgrade to what was available when I got into electronics.
