    I think I know what's going on when Paul is measuring the 100MHz oscillator. He says the wave is fine, but if I measure the period of the waveform the old fashioned way (using the graticule), it looks to be little more than 3 major divisions - I estimate 3.2. It looks like the time base is set to 20uS per division, which gives a period of about 64uS or a frequency of about 15.6KHz, which is consistent with the frequency the scope is measuring. This is WAY OFF from the supposed 100MHz frequency of the oscillator, which should oscillate about 100 times in 1uS or 2000 times in one 20uS division. Either the oscillator is FUBAR or what's being displayed is a classic case of aliasing - I choose aliasing. This is a good example of why NOT to trust the setup that happens when you hit the Auto button.
    Later, when he measured the 100MHz oscillator again, he had the time base set all the way down to 10nS, which I think is its minimum, if it's the same as my FNIRSI 1013D. Then the period of each sine wave is about 1 major division or 10nS, which matches the 100MHz frequency. (It actually looks a bit slower than that but not down to the 80ish MHz the scope is displaying. However, I would take this particular display with a grain (or bucket) of salt. If the scope's actual max sampling rate is 200M Sa/S, it's only taking 2 samples every 10nS, which is right at the Nyquist rate. It's hard to recreate a periodic signal with only 2 samples per period. Couple this with a low pass filter with a 3dB point of 20-30MHz, as Paul and Kangaroo Dave estimated for the FNIRSI 1013D, and I'd have to say that this scope is doing a fair job of recreating a 100MHz signal.
    By the way, Paul (by either genius, experience, or dumb luck) demonstrated an important debugging technique and was just to darn modest to brag about it. When he didn't get what he expected the first time he measured the 100MHz oscillator, he measured some other things, then measured the 100MHz again and got a DIFFERENT result. It's amazing how often that happens!
    I tried to watch EVERY scope review video Paul has done this weekend (and have the red eyes to prove it - 22 different scopes!), and in one video, he put the scope into a mode where it only displays the various samples as unconnected dots. (I really wish I had noted which video this was in - if anyone remembers, please let me know.) It seems like that display mode would give a good method to determine the scope's sampling rate. Put the scope in the shortest time base available with only one channel turned on, sample any waveform using single shot, then measure the time between dots (or dots per unit of time). From this you could calculate (at least approximately) the scope's sampling rate. Has anyone done this?
    In Dave's teardown of the FNIRSI 1013D, he guessed which chips were the A/D converters and probed them to determine that they were sampling at 200MHz per channel (actually 100MHz per A/D, but there are two A/Ds per chip). I'm guessing the A/D converters are the two chips to the left of the big one in Paul's teardown. Any chance you could probe them like Dave did, Paul? (Don't probe them with this scope, use your Rigol or MicSig.)

    A 100 MHz pure sinusoidal wave should be used for the test. A 100 MHz square wave will require a quite higher sampling rate to get enough samples to have a good interpolation. This is because a perfect square wave is made of summation of the whole series of odd harmonics.

    • @RSP13
      @RSP13 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Not really.
      If the scope actually had 1 GSa/s (as advertised) it would have 10 samples to draw 1 cycle of the square wave, which is just enough to convey its basic form.
      This is the reason why scopes should have sampling rates at least 10x greater than the advertised maximum bandwidth.
      PS.: This scope probably has 200MSa/s since it uses the same chip as the 1013D but with two 100MSa/s vias combined at each channel. Also I doubt that this protoboard and alligator clips are a viable setup for a 100Mhz signal.

    1) Never trust “auto set” function. The software makes assumptions based on what is read through the ADC. Always crank the time-based knob to get a “second opinion”.
    2) Aliasing is a common problem with digital oscilloscopes. The display and readouts will show a lower frequency signal with a misrepresented waveform. This is more so, when “auto set” is used.
    3) To a certain point, “auto set” is like the “autoroute” functions on PCB CAD software: they are ironically NOT for beginners.

    Are You sure your breadboard is capable of handling 100MHz frequencies?
    Why not try with a proper signal gen, and see if You get the same issues there?

    Interesting how most of the reviews for the FNIRSI 1914D Oscilloscope were done about a year ago. FNIRSI must have sent a bunch out to the youtube content creators tjem. I seen several review though from about a year ago that test the scope and proved it does not work will past 30 MHz. If you need a scope that is useful beyond 30 MHz, keep looking. Can't believe the get away with false advertisement.

  • @KissAnalog
    @KissAnalog 3 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    Cool video Paul. I think the problem is sampling rate, not analog bandwidth. The sign of analog bandwidth would be the 3 dB point where amplitude drops as you know. But when the waveform is misinterpreted as this was doing - it is a sign of not enough samples to connect the dots properly. For instance, when you changed from 50 ns/div to 10 ns/div, it showed the right waveform as now you are collecting 5x less samples. Then when you went to higher freq - it again gave the wrong waveform. At about 2 min in and you said the wave was shown right but the freq counter was off, well the freq counter was showing what the displayed wave was showing, so the waveform was not correct.
    I’d say it is more like 10 MHz, or maybe 20 MHz if you only show a few cycle. What that shows is that it is likely an issue with sampling rate and not enough memory to capture enough data points even at 28 MHz, unless you are OK with just a few cycles one the screen. IMHO;)

    My first 2 thoughts
    - is the breadboard capable of giving a RELIABLE 100MHz signal, i recommend using a SIG GEN instead
    - You're using AUTO quite a bit, i wouldn't trust AUTO settings, i recommend adjusting manually
    - i also don't think the problem is so much so analog bandwidth as it would be Memory Depth or Sampling Rate

    FFT seems to be working as you can see the harmonics of the semi-square wave. I would try the demonstration using manual mode, not auto setup. Great scope for portable use though.

    As I wrote in part 1: of course you can calibrate the probe in the BNC connector of the signal generator. But do you really have to save money where possible? But then the question remains, what else can I expect from the device. I think you saw that here. For not much more money you can get a hantek dso2c10 or an owon SDS1102. These are only beginner-devices too, but at least they are usable.

    I found this channel trough search. Thanks for efforts. Saw Hantek 250$ scope and this one and matter of fact these reviews are useless garbage. If this was a toy then okey we saw how it looks alike. But its very important measuring device, so how can you review anything without checking side by side with another one!? Instead its "interesting". Just make sure your generators are working as designed at this particular moment, and make sure is this "modulation" is real or its result of how this scope is functioning. So I plugged in a small blue tooth speaker into the first channel of mine and it got up to around 25v peak to peak. The problem is that I increased the volume same voltage just dropped to the bottom of the screen (it broke). So I assumed that I blew a fuse, another problem is that there are no fuses as I can see. How do I fix this? Can I fix this? Also I noticed that the power cable that it came with doesn’t work any more, but I have an elegoo 9v 1000mA power cable and it works with that, but before I turn it on the screen turns white then it turns normal for a bit while it’s on, but when I click auto the screen freeze on what it was on.

    Try it again with the 100MHz oscillator at full clockwise on the sweep rate knob. This is a SAMPLING scope, so it's not going to work exactly like an analog scope. When you set the sweep rate too slow, you're looking at the beat frequency between the sample rate and the actual waveform. For 110MHz, you need to max out the sweep rate.

    On one of the 4 star reviews to the rebrand version of this scope, on Amazon I think, they mentioned that a "firmware upgrade to this scope" could be used to flash the memory of the rebrand version and bring it up to the 100MHz range (someone else also saw the shortfall apparently). Maybe a simple firmware update is all that is needed here to bring this scope to advertised specs?

  • @pir869
    @pir869 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I ordered one of these scopes,now i find there are issues with pk-k voltage being off and by a fair amount that a firmware upgrade does not fix,did you compare this scope to a known signal source pk-pk voltage?.
    Also it has a min Vin sensitivity of 50mV(when or if it actually measures correctly),of course sponsored vids will make claims of perfection,but you expect that.
    I don't intend to measure over 100Khz as i want the scope for audio,i know 20Hz-20Khz but the amplifier will still amplify higher Hz than audible range.
    Appreciate the effort to show these entry level tools.

    At 100mhz it showed a perfect sine wave is that because of its interpolation?

    • @franktechniek
      @franktechniek 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      A perfect 100mhz square wave has endless harmonics of 200mhz, 400mhz, 800mhz, 1600mhz and so on. Since the bandwidth is limited to 100mhz (3db) it gets displayed as a (more or less) sinewave which is perfectly normal with any 100mhz scope. Also, the used canned oscillator does not output a true square wave, suffers from limited output bandwith as well. And the probe, the wires and what have you.

    • @adriansmith31
      @adriansmith31 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's Chinese 100mhz / 1Gsps so like most Chinese electronics you take the maximum it's rated at, divide it by half and then again by a random division then you get close to what it's really rated at. Found that especially so with power supply modules. Applies to this too. I have the 1013D it's adequate for my needs but in no way is it capable of doing as advertised.

    I would be interested to know if I can connect a lipo battery with 3 or 4 cells. On the back it says 1-40 V input and I suspect that the voltage converter is under the long sheet metal cover. I have a lot of lipo batteries with 3 cells and 5 A from the model construction area, so the device can be operated for a very long time. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any information about the power requirement and, as I've already read plug-in power supplies can produce sparks in the image. It would be very advantageous if I could simply install a battery ( inside ) without using additional Stepdouwn controllers what would be stupid if a downstream step-up pushes it up again.

    Unfortunately, this scope, and the Yeapook 1040D which is just a re-branded version of the same scope, are both 30MHz scopes which are being falsely advertised as 100MHz. The industry standard frequency rating for a scope is the frequency at which the displayed amplitude of the signal is -3dB attenuated from the actual signal input amplitude. That's 70.7% of original amplitude. For this scope, that frequency is around 30MHz, NOT 100MHz. Therefore, it is NOT a 100MHz scope. I ordered one and found this out too late. I'm sending mine back and replacing it with a real scope from a different manufacturer.

      I have the 1202X-E, and I can tell you I love it. lately, I have been using it to build an HF radio and I have had no problems. the FFT works great also. I've used it in XY mode, I've built a probe and used it as a tracer. all works well. also, I have read signals well over 100Mhz and no problems.

    This scope is a piece of JUNK that is nowhere near 100MHz, and the signal generator is there to suck you in to buy this overpriced (yes overpriced) piece of junk!

      @@stevenbliss989 Yeah ive heard that alot, it doesnt meet advertised specs but I dont need all that spec and it looks good everywhere else with its quick boot and response. If they advertized this as 30mhz scope would it all of a sudden be good? because thats the only complaint im hearing which is a non issue for hobbyist like me that intends to use it for audio amplifier circuits, but if theres something better in the price range, or theres something else really wrong with this unit please do share.

    It would be cool to see if anything can read that micro sd and see what is on it. Also, curious what happens if you try to run it with the sd removed. Sucks about the no 100mhz, but it's still pretty great.
