Figured it was time to replace my 1998 Tektronix TDS-224 and I found your video incredibly concise and helpful. The only big complaint I have with the Siglent is the fan is LOUD and annoys me, I guess because the Tek was dead silent. Having something that is more computer than dedicated device is a bit of an adjustment as I have so much "muscle memory" on the Tek and it seems like there is more "software distance" and laggy behavior between me and the scope data, but I'm sure that feeling will diminish over time. Anyway, thanks for the video -- you've good taste and instincts -- no need to be so self-deprecating about your opinions or worried about the reaction of others. This is the Internet after all! :)
Thank you for the kind words and compliments! The fan noise indeed is something that takes some getting used to - especially if the scope you came from was silent. My Keysight scope fan is more annoying than the Siglent (it sounds like 3 frequencies that are audible) 2 of them are on the high pitched whine side. The Keysight fan of course bothers me now more than it used to and the Siglent more pleasant. I do suspect that the big names (Keysight,Tektronix, R&S, LeCroy) do have snappier interfaces, but for the specs of the Siglent - Quite a bit more expensive.
I just got this a week ago and the value and quality is insane. A big step up from the common Rigol ds1054z for a similar price. I've used scopes at work for more than 10 years; Rigols, and Tektronix, with the most expensive being a Tektronix MSO2000 series scope. Assuming that it keeps calibration well, I trust this for professional level testing and design qualification.
Love the videos so far. Would also love to see a demonstration of the advanced measurements features they added in this scope: histogram, trend, track, gate, that sort of stuff.
SDS800X HD evolved from SDS1000X-E which didn't have any clock however later in development a NTP clock was added to support the new X-E Logging feature and a clock was added to SDS800X HD models but it's only a default Linux clock which counts from boot and a NTP clock was also incorporated but needs an internet connection. WRT WiFi support, this is a feature we have strongly recommended Siglent add into coming firmware updates.
No HDMI? use the LAN to see the screen on your PC and mirror all functions. No RTC? use LAN. I've recently got the 8024X to replace another Siglent , SDS 1102X-E. My ancient Tektronix and HP scopes (1980's 90's) are still working, but nothing more than nostalgia, great in their day, going to recycling or landfill!
Hi, love your videos. I need to ask for some advice please if you don't mind. A guy at work got my SDS804X and connected it across mains (240V in Australia). He told me that he mistakenly connected my scope's grounding earth on the probe to a wire which he then inserted into a power point Active... and saw a big spark and the wire melt! Wow! There was no circuit breaker in the building. I am not happy. How can I test my oscilloscope now to see if it has been damaged in any way? Can you give me some suggestions please? Note that oscilloscope turns on and I can measure the test square wave with the probe in question. I am not sure what else to do to test it.
Thank you, very kind of you! Oh yeah, that is a way a scope can meet its demise. I wouldn't be happy with them doing that. On the plus side, if it turns and works on that is encouraging. With the scope off and disconnected, one of the basic things I would be checking would be with a multimeter in ohms mode, the BNC connections at the scope by probing the centre and the outer BNC connector it should read a little over 1 Mohm on all four channels. Then also in ohms mode on the multimeter I would verify that the ground of the BNC and the plug in ground are a solid short. And I would also recommend doing the same on the unplugged power lead to make sure that wasn't damaged. Unfortunately the only way to be truly sure would be to send it to (likely a place you purchased it from) to make sure all the accessories and functions work and give it a good once over & calibration. (not sure if the cost would be worth it) You could also ask some folks over at EEVBlog www.eevblog.com/forum/index.php The guy is fortunate he wasn't hurt.
