Huge respect to the race director who was hesitant because he wanted to be SURE he had enough concrete evidence, public opinion aside, guilty or not. That sort of shit isn't even practiced in court a lot of the time these days, let alone in public scandals.

Agreed. I want guilty people to get caught, but only after due process. I don't want anyone to be labelled guilty without enough evidence, no matter how guilty they are. And considering how much the justice system makes a mockery of "presumption of innocence", and outright encourages the general public to take that same attitude, I have deep respect for anyone who bucks that trend and tries to do these things properly. Really not comparable at all to a seven year (a small child) cheating at a board game played at home with family / friends. This is FAR more serious. There are far many more implications. It pushed one woman who actually ran the NYC race out of running for the Boston marathon. It was extremely immoral behavior. Seven year old’s, however, indeed lie & get frustrated with games. Indeed. I may be able to walk/jog/run between 3-4 miles in a day, but I very much doubt I could finish a marathon, let alone win it. Moreover, I volunteer at a weeklong summer camp for pediatric cancer patients/survivors and their siblings, and the camp offers Polar Bear patches to those who participate in the morning Polar Bear swim for four days. One of my co-counselors this year offered to give me his patch from last year (I'd missed camp due to undergoing chemo), and I told him that it wouldn't mean anything to me as I hadn't earned it.

Gareau being crowned with the winner's laurels at a press conference WITHOUT stating her name. We also need to remember, because it's easily forgotten: In 1980.. practically speaking... we didn't have cameras the way we use them today. Yes, obviously, cameras existed. But today, with digital, we use cameras to document everything and ANYTHING, without giving it a second thought. At this time, very, very few people had home video camcorders, or they may have had a Super 8 film camera. Either way, it was cumbersome, expensive, and actual time you had to film was very limited. We can assume a lot of people had film cameras for stills, but, same thing: people were choosy about what they took a picture of, because processing film was expensive. (Also, unlike today, most people DIDN'T have a camera on them) Nobody was wasting film on some rando giving up on the race part-way through. And, she probably jumped back in far too quickly for anyone to react with a camera. (And far back enough from the finish line that the news cameras didn't capture her) Obviously, today its completely different and trying to cheat this brazenly would be impossible, even without trackers. Hell, now we would expect surveillance cameras on the Metro. 🤳

Even though the tale is filled with twists and turns, I keep coming back to the fact that if she'd actually waited and joined the course a little later she would have completely gotten away with it. Think about all the things that would have cascaded from that- her boss would have been thrilled, she would have touted it for the rest of her life, and her obituary would make note of it. I realize (or hope) that people like her aren't very common, but I have to wonder....how many OTHER people do I meet in an average year, who carefully took note of the other runners before sneaking (metaphorically) onto the course for various achievements or windfalls in their life?

I've ran over 13 marathons and 6 Boston's with my best time being 2:21:45 and it was hell to get my time this low. But when you run a marathon, you make friends and really get to know the runners in your pack through out the race as they pull you along. Runner's would constantly call out times and what time goals they are looking for to be in that pack. It was classic that she knew nothing about anyone she ran with or about running, clothing, shoes or training workouts.
