  • Christian Hackenberg was a 5* recruit coming out of high school and is considered one of the biggest QB draft busts of all time, so my question is, what went wrong?

      Bill O'Brien (coach of Houston Texans and formally Penn State where Hackenberg went to college) traded up to pick 50, one pick in front of the Jets in the 2016 draft and did not pick him. Bill O'Brien decided he would rather play the season with Brock Osweiler, then draft Hackenberg and the Jets still didn't see the huge red flags.

    The "State Championships" he won in high school were in a pool of about 12 small private schools. The state title was no more meaningful than a league title. Half those schools had zero in the way of D1 talent. He was a big fish in a very small pond. He didn't help his stock when he left Penn State and thanked everybody BUT the coach and basically blamed him (Franklin) for his diminished production.
    To his credit - his commitment to Penn State was a beacon of light when the program sorely needed one. He was for the most part a class act - but this baseball thing is almost laughable.

    Y'know, it's easy to see when top rated draft picks fail to perform in the NFL, but it's more difficult to remember when top rated high school recruits fail in college. I wonder if it happens just as often. I think you nailed it, though. Hackenberg was never as good as his 5* rating. He had all the intangibles to "be" great, but he never was.

    What kill this career was the coaching change at Penn St. James Franklin’s scheme is a RPO which is a far cry from
    a pro scheme. That combined with the fact that Franklin was only left 7 scholarship offensive lineman to work with and only one had started more than 2 games, Hackenberg had no line to protect him his sophomore year or no running game to open up the field to pass. Lastly James Franklin started his tenure at Penn St with arguably the worst Offensive Coordinator in school history named John Donovan. Donovan was fired after Hackenberg’s junior season and the next season they scored more touchdowns under Joe Moorehead than they did the previous two years combined under John Donovan. The lack of an offensive line, a scheme that didn’t fit his talents, and a horrible Offensive Coordinator hurt Hackenberg’s development and killed his career. He should have transferred after his Sophomore season.

      Glad to see some people here have some football knowledge. Hackenberg I believe had been sacked more then any other QB in the history of the sport. I could be wrong, but even though it's close. He took a beating. That offensive line was his downfall.

    • @seanthomson5578
      @seanthomson5578 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@spitfirex007 yes the offensive line was very poor his sophomore year and made minimal improvements his junior year. He was sacked 10 times in one game I remember against Temple. Although the offensive line was bad, his offensive coordinator was his ultimate downfall. He actually was forced to run option plays and he was no option quarterback. They never did play action pass or had him under center after his freshman year and he was solid in a pro scheme during his freshman year.

    Great video as always Scott! Being a PSU fan, I saw his whole college career unfold. I think what really got him to the point where he’s out of football was the drastic coaching change he experienced after O’Brien left. O’Brien (when he was with the Pats and in some ways, with the Texans right now) and Franklin run two very different kinds of schemes. I honestly feel like the scheme change put a damper in his confidence and he brought that with him to the pros which sucks because I feel like he had all the talent in the world. It’s gonna be interesting to see how his baseball career shapes up

    Hackenburg was a decent fit with B.O.B. Pro style offense. He didn’t adjust well at all to the Franklin/Donovan spread that is built for mobile QBs. The O-Line was the first and hardest hit by the sanctions, and he took more sacks than any college quarterback I can remember. The thinking was to try and field a decent defense to keep us in games, so the limited recruiting was focused on that. He stuck with PSU when the program needed some signs of stability, that we could get and keep a 5* Qb and we wished him well when he moved on. He wasn’t ready, probably overrated too, but it was another year taking sacks because he wasn’t mobile, or jumping to the NFL. Anywhere else in college he went he would have had to sit out a year because the free transfer the NCAA handed down as part of the sanctions was over. He got paid warming those benches so I guess there are worse jobs.

    The only reason he was 2nd round pick is the Jets. Same reason sanchez, geno smith and Bryce petty were over-drafted: guys with more hype than talent. As with an over-the-hill farvre or o'donnell off a horrible Superbowl or testaverde, the Jets want names. And no wonder, no matter the position, Jets constantly overpay and/or overpick name players seemingly every year and for whatever reason, their fans think it's going to work and get upset: same Jets! No wonder. Pick smart and develop and take positions you need, not the biggest name out there.

    @spitfirex007 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Lol what a garbage channel. Did you take any real time to research this or just look up some stats. The reason Hackenberg fell off the map wasnt because he was just never very good. But it was due to the fact that Penn State had lost multiple scholarships due to NCAA sanctions. Hackenberg could have bolted for elsewhere. But he was committed to PSU and wanted to keep the team together. During his Soph and JR year he was playing behind a walk on offensive line. Literally. They had like maybe 1 or 2 players on scholarship. And they were 2 stars. Not to mention the coaching change. Two completely different styles. He fit Bill's system. Not Franklin's.
    If you know anything about football, a bad o line can ruin a QBs career. He had no time to throw, he became happy footed and his mechanics started to breakdown. Infact in 2014 he was sacked roughly 80 times. That's unheard of. He left early, because frankly I think he was tired of it. He got hit over and over in the bowl game against GA. Got hurt and left in the 1st half. I think he knew McSorely would be taking over as he fit Franklin's system and he was tired of being beat on, so he left.
    Little research next time. Make me sit through garbage ads for "he just wasnt very good" lol
