i’m doing a bunch of research on what i need to take the best care of a crested gecko and i’ve never had a reptile before. i was just wondering what type of ceramic heat emitter i should get and how long it’ll last
I use a heat mat for my leopard gecko and no UVB the main reason for this is because although leopard geckos can benefit from UVB they don't actually need it because in the wild they are out at early dawn before the sun comes out and late dusk after the sun goes down. So, they never really see the sun anyway they just get belly heat from the rock crevices they hide in during the day. Also, I find my leopard gecko is afraid of the light because every time I try putting UVB light on him he goes in his hide and refuses to come out or eat at all.
What wattage che would you recommend? I plan on putting it to a thermostat.... Basic 10 gallon upright right now for the 2 month old crestie in getting but really wondering the wattage for the cage?
@@NickHowellElectricgeckos yes the belly heat is good for them, the heat mats are just kind of an inefficient way to provide it, and can be difficult to use with certain setups. Dhp's can provide high ambient temps as well as heating basking surfaces in a more efficient and natural way. I'm trying to think of who I knows talked about it, I know the channel Leopard Gecko has discussed using them with her bioactive setups.

One concern I have about using heat emitters is probe placement. If my emitter is center tank then is it okay to put my emitter on the side of the tank towards the top?
I thought cresty can just live in room temperature. My room sits around 70. But being in Canada I have mine above heating at around 75. She likes to sit right under the above heating. Is there a reason she loves all that heat?
@@NickHowellElectricgeckos she sits right up to mesh, directly under the heater. I have to turn the heater off because I'm afraid the mesh will get too hot and burn her. I also would try moving her, but she runs right back there.

Almost every plant is safe for cresties, since they don’t eat leaves. Stick with house plants and you’ll be fine! Anything at the Home Depot “house plants” section is safe!

I disagree with the idea people are more lightly to need heat at night. i need heating during the day, not at night, so i use a halogen, my night temps are fine. I'm just really confused by that statement at the begining.
@@NickHowellElectricgeckos well yeah but the night temp range falls into my normal house temps. It's the day time temp range that's supposed to be higher.
@@NickHowellElectricgeckos that can be true for their hotter months (currently ongoing) but idk about rarely. In fact over their winter I saw it as low as 64 some nights. And I saw a 68-70 average night temp for the last few months before november. I enjoy tracking their weather. With that said it also rarely gets 77 at night and is frequently over 80 during the day especially right now in their hottest months, with real feels being almost 95°. Now obviously I dont keep my geckos above 80, but I do keep it warmer during the day then at night. 75-80 is fine for during the day, but I wouldnt keep it that warm overnight, that just seems confusing. They move around at night during the cooler parts of the evening and late night in the wild. Not during the day when its warmer. They're asleep when its warmer, and I dont see it stay above 75 at night very often at all in NC, even in their current hottest months, which I'm not sure would be the best gradient to go by. When it is above 75 at night, it's much more then 80 during the day, again with much hotter real feels, this is when they're sleeping and hiding. You cant say its commonly warmer then 75 at night without it still getting warmer during the day. Either way, weather specifics aside, however warm it is for them at night, whichever season, it is warmer during the day, not at night. While some people do need heating over night, they would also need to offer heating during the day, since more then likely if it's not 72 or 75 like you were saying at night, it's probably not warmer then 75 during the day for them either. And for people like me where my night temps in my room stay around 69-73, I definitely should be using heating during the day to make it warmer, when it would be warmer for them, as part of their natural cycle. I've never heard of just needing to offer heat at night for any reptile, the closest I've heard is consistent heating for some species, but I dont think you're suggesting 75-77° 24/7

i dont even use em for leopard geckos, i prefer Deep heat projectors.

I would put it near the closest basking spot and make that hit 77!

Any wattage is fine as long as it’s connected to a thermostat!

You can provide UVB if you want! If will only benefit! Unless it’s a super dark room an LED isn’t needed!

Yes! Room temp is fine but optimal temps are 73-77 some people even do 80. Mine hang around 76-79 in the summer months and in the winter 69-73

She’s probably just happy up there! As long as the mesh isnt like stupid it should be fine! The mesh won’t be much warmer than the tank!

They move around just at night so if you temps drop too low you’ll need to bump it up!

You still want the night temps 70-77, in New Caledonia depending on the month. it rarely gets below 68 even!

Mine stay at 75 24/7! I cool down my breeder during the winter months but keep the babies at optimal temps for growth.
