    I just got a uvb lamp for my little dude last week and was surprised how much he seemed to enjoy it. Immediately after plugging it in he crawled out of his coconut hide to go on top of it to bath directly under the light for the rest of the day, and seemed way more active at night. Out of all the expensive plants, hides and decorations I got him the uvb light really seemed to be the most impactful.
    I highly recommend getting one!

      If the gecko has MDB there’s no way to cure it.
      So the best thing to do is keep dusting. You can provide UVB if you like!

    Also, and this is probably just a semantic issue... I dont like saying needed or not needed when it comes to uvb. "Not needed" just has such a weird connotation. Lately I've been preferring the distinction, needed and essential. basically I say UV is needed for reptiles.
    Cresteds wont die without UV if supplemented correctly (most of the time) so I dont consider it essential, though I still say its needed, and it is for certain functions, they can just survive without it.

I live in the uk and the breeder I purchased my gecko off has said I need to get a uvb bulb but at the moment I am using the exo terra sun heat bulb at 25watt and the night glo bulb at 15 watt. If yo provide uvb use a strip light! It has benefits but it’s not essential for life!

I know in this video you mentioned not to go over 3% however I was wondering if the dimensions of my tank would alter this recommendation at all. My tank is 40" tall, I am hoping that this is tall enough to provide enough room for the gecko to get as close or far as it needs. Please let me know what you think! I'm not 100% sure on how if the effects of UVA in the color range continues at night. On earth, UVA rays get caught and bounced around by our atmosphere, and even caught under things that provide cover, like trees, so small amounts of UVA are contained at night. With that said im not 100% sure how this works in captivity, I dont think the effects of uva just go off with the light but I'm having a hard time finding something explaining exactly how UVA works at night in regards to reptile vision.

      @@NickHowellElectricgeckos I was able to find this; but again it doesnt explain how this works at night, if it does.
      www.uvguide.co.uk/whatisuv.htm
      This part, the website was a bit confusing to navigate. Still looking for sources for night time.
      UVA (320-400nm) is an important component of sunlight, and is supplied in small amounts by "ordinary" household bulbs (incandescent lights) and by lighting often described as "full spectrum" light. Larger amounts are supplied by all specialist ultraviolet lamps.
      UVA is part of the visible spectrum for reptiles; they see colours and patterns differently to us because of this extra dimension to their vision. Some reptiles rely upon UVA light to identify individuals of their own species by their UVA-reflective markings; many plants and insects also have distinctive UVA reflectance and "patterns" which enable reptiles to recognise them.25,28,31,40,41
      Reptiles exposed to UVA light show increased social behaviour and activity levels, are more inclined to bask and feed and are also more likely to reproduce as UVA light has a positive effect on the pineal gland, a light-sensitive structure just below the brain which responds to the increase and decrease of daylight with the changing seasons.2,36

    • @phantomstarsx9343
      @phantomstarsx9343 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What I find interesting, is when people discuss UVB lights increasing their geckos activity and awareness, it sounds more like the UVA supplied by the UVB bulb that's causing it.
      I did also find mention of UVB helping the immune system of reptiles but it didnt go beyond a mention.
      Though the link I sent in the prior message, they did a skin test with reptiles. If I read it correctly apparently reptiles offered UVB had a thicker shed, to help block some of the UV, while reptiles with supplements had thinner skin sheds, which would allow more UV to be absorb. A strange test but I do find that an interesting way if that's how they kind of help regulate their UV intake through the skin
