One of my favorite small moments in this arc is when everybody is freaking out over Rayleigh being Roger's first mate there is a panel of Brook saying "Huh, I think I heard of a rookie called Gold Roger. Or maybe I didn't." and then he goes back to eating his boiled beans.
That was hilarious. We didn't put together Roger would have been a young upstart staring out while the Rumbar Pirates where doing there thing on the Grand Line
We watch hours upon hours of content just for 1 chapter. An hour for an arc is like nothing for us addicts especially for break weeks of OP chapters. 😂

Lots of people will say Oda just used a character's design again to retrofit Rayleigh into the story. But there's an SBS BEFORE Rayleigh was introduced in the manga, that Oda says he planned all of Roger stuff with Buggy and Shanks and told the anime team to not make "that person" be the Captain in the flashback and we'll see him in the future, which we did in Sabaody. That specific scene even reappeared in the recent Chapters.
Even more than Robin, Brook finally found a family after floating aimlessly on a ship filled with the corpses of his old crew FOR FIFTY YEARS, and like two weeks later he loses his new family I think about how strong Brook is a lot
I can see the moment when they find the One Piece, and 17 chapters of info dump just answering questions seeded throughout the story, at least half of them, as tons of them won't have an answer in Raftel
Pay attention to the way Robin addresses other people. Even if everyone on the crew is calling someone by name Robin will cheerfully refer to them by whatever silly nickname Luffy gives them.
I think it's both because Luffy's childish absurdity is refreshing after the hellish life she lived before and because Robin is pretty quirky herself. Remember when she envisioned the Nikyu Nikyu no mi's abilities as a bunch of cats with big paws?
@@cassie6146 That is very true, however, I believe it's more because at this point she just adores luffy. She is so devoted to him that she wouldn't care about living without her captain.
@@avatardm it's not a spoiler if everything I tell her has already happened in the story. We saw the Flashback with Shanks, Buggy and Rayleigh, and we met Rayleigh, who told us he was Roger's first mate. I am just connecting the dots here.
I love this arc because when the Straw Hats try to repurchase Camie, they fail. As a result, the only thing they can do is tear the auction hall down and fight back. The whole scenario gets at the idea that you can't solve slavery (or corruption in general) by playing by the system's rules. Rather you must obliterate it from the root.
And unfortunately you can't necessarily brute force it either judging by the end of the arc. Luffy obliterates that shithead and, as a result, nearly cost him his crew.
@@leakypeach6250 Doing the right thing, and doing it by brute force would both lead into consecuencies. They did save Kamie. They did save Hachi. They did destroy the auction house, that was neverrebuilt again (maybe it was replaced by another ones, that may be true). But they had to pay a prize for doing the right thing. And doing it by force. In the end, they don't lament doing the right thing or how they did it. They lament not being strong enough to soften the aftershocks.
I think one of the reasons that the One Piece community are so adamant about not spoiling anything for new readers is the scene in this arc where Rayleigh admits he knows all the answers and Luffy’s response is basically to scream “NO SPOILERS”. Like Luffy, One Piece fans want the answers that Roger’s crew found, but you can be sure we plan on enjoying the journey to get them as much as the answers themselves.
It was fun titbit Oda fashion, but if you think more philosophically you come to the conclusion that it is symbolic. Fishmen are treated badly and face racism because Racist humans consider them Fish instead of people, so Hachi opening Takayoki shop literally telling them no Me(Hachi) & octopus are not the same.
Technically not, since cannibalism would imply eating someone or something of your own species. Hachan is a fishman, not an octopus, so it's not cannibalism. He's obviously related to them, so it's actually more similar to humans eating bush meat (which is still disturbing and kind of weird, but not cannibalism).
I like that in the last arc moria, who got wrecked and lost everyone in his crew when he went to the new world, told Luffy he wasn't strong enough. He was 100% right and knew what he was talking about.
This is also a theme that shows what makes Luffy a different kind of player. Back in Alabasta, Sir Crocodile told him basically the same thing, and Luffy just brushed over. This is the payoff to all those years.
True. Luffy just steamrolled the grand line and thought he could make it to the end through guts alone. Then he met Aokiji and realized how monstrous some of those fighters are, so he came up with the Gears to power up. It's only when you get to Sabaody that you realize that the top guys are on a completely different level

I've got chronic One Piece brain and I've been through the series several times now and I got to say I get a real kick out of watching people new to the series fall in love with it and become just as obsessed as me. :D
Same. Kinda forced first my roomate and now my girlfriend because their only argument against was the length. My roommate has catch up. With my girlfriend we stopped after Enies Lobby (my favorite) bacause she also didn't watch Game of Thrones and modern family. After my master tesis in 2 weeks we will continue with Thriller Bark. I showed her that an other book person enjoys One Piece a lot.
I *could* be wrong, but I believe that at the beginning of this arc, Luffy doesn't know that Ace has been captured by the government, only that he's in trouble based on the vivre card. I feel like he kind of assumes that Ace is just having a challenging adventure that he wouldn't want Luffy to stick his nose into.
Ace being in danger isn't new, and he hates it when Luffy gets dragged into his problems. Of course Luffy would laugh off him being in danger and just trust him to get out of it on his own.
Fun fact: Oda does plan most of his writing and story in advance by several arcs but the supernovas introduced in this arc we’re made last minute because Oda felt the arc would be more empty without adding other major pirates since the island is supposed to be a main hub for pirate crews

One thing i really appreciate is how Oda called his shot here Babe Ruth-style. For all the fretting about spoilers, Oda will often outright *tell* you what's gonna happen, yet still make it come as a total shock Last arc Moria straight-up told Luffy to his face that _exactly this thing_ is going to happen. He's not strong enough, and he's going to lose his crew. No one believes him though - not Luffy, not the reader - because he's this sad washed-up joke of a pirate, what does he know? Besides, we've got plot armor on our side! it'll be fine! it'll be... fine... 😭
@@syneresis yeah the first time I heard the ship coater guy is 100x stronger then Luffy before even seeing him I was like "lol that's impossible" But yeah he is literally 100x stronger then Luffy it's not even close lol It amazes me and surprises me how he can tell us excatly everything but once we really get the whole view it really makes sense.
and people say thriller bark is not part of the saga. There is a thematic throughline, we get yonko setup before seeing a yonko in action and Kuma is a major player trough the whole saga. Yes it was a big arc with a climax of its own, but so is WCI and its still par of the vs4yonko saga
@@jukaa1012 “puts on pretentious art hat” Thriller Bark’s focus on Zombies and “living dead” is absolutely thematic on man levels. Firstly it’s dramatic irony for Moria himself. He is a beaten pirate. He lost everything. His drive to improve. His treasure. His crew. And his believe on dreams. Due to the way OnePiece is written, without those things, he might as well be dead. In other words, he could be seen as a dead man walking himself. Brook has died as well. Both thematically like Moria and literally. He is literally just a moving corpse. But, he regained a crew and the will to chase his dream. Which makes him both thematically and literally live/alive again. The focus around death is also a thematic warning for Luffy. Because this is the punishment for failure. This is what chasing to become pirate king gets you. A dead crew and eternal loneliness. WTF did I smoke to write this?
Some points: 1. Kizaru is literally made of light, the same way Ace is made of fire, and Enel made of electricity 2. Bible guy tells something to Rayleigh before making the crew disappear, and Kizaru is pissed about it. 3. Kizaru tells Bible guy that he will have to explain himself for his actions, not to luffy, but to the navy 4. Bible guy is a warlord but he has been going against direct orders of the navy since thriller bark 5. The axe guy just controls the paw paws, he didn't make them
This arc was the first one to really show that the Marines when they are serious are no joke. The way Kizaru basically manhandled 4 of the supernovas on his own without any effort and how the Pacifistas were all so strong it took multiple people to even slow them down just shows that the Marines are a real threat. Before now the Marines were kind of just there, but this arc shows how truly dangerous they can be. It makes sense that the strongest marines would be closer to the Redline and in the New World since that is where the strongest threats are.
@@Mauro-sn2kt aokiji showed up and froze a few people and was clearly not serious, taking pity on robin. kizaru showed up, kicked everyones ass then kept walking towards the straw hats who wouldve almost certainly died if not for rayleigh. then right fucking after that, aokiji, kizaru and a brand new guy named akainu all stand between luffy and ace, and luffy never once was on the level of aokiji or kizari one-one-one, let alone fighting both at once, with the addition of the relentless akainu. the marines are spread out, but theyre yonko tier for sure.
One thing that got me in this arc is when Nami got vanished she is looking at Luffy and says "Help" just like in her arc alllll the way in the beginning. This time though, Luffy wasn't able to help. :(
Yeah, it's like when he ran trying to save Robin and misses her by a hair due to the draw back of Gear 2nd, the very same technique he had used to save her in the past.
And there's a panel in the next arc that clearly shows that Nami's disappearance may have hit Luffy the hardest given their history. Strong World -- which is written by Oda -- expands on that really well.
The reality check Luffy gets in this arc is insane... Merphy's voice breaking during the disappearance scene actually made me teae up, its such an insanely upsetting scene 😭
One note about bounties: the bounty doesn’t always necessarily reflect what someone does so much as the level of threat they are to the world government. Think like Robin with a bounty as a child. She was a threat because of knowledge not necessarily what she had done.
It’s honestly kinda amazing that Kidd Slaughter entire island communities almost everywhere he went, actively going out his way to kill civilians and marines alike. And yet his bounty was still just barley higher then Luffy’s, a happy go lucky rubber boy who just wanted to see the world with his friends. Their world is so fucked up.

Okay so can we PLEASE talk about Nami when she says “We’ll get her back using their rules! We’ll buy her back!” Ive been going back to this scene for it’s pure emotion wrecking capabilities for what-10 years? And I never ONCE put together that that sentence is not just Strawhat Law-doing anything and everything possible to get back your friend-but it is so important about Nami’s heart too. Because she can’t let Camie be SOLD. Because Nami-NAMI-out of all people. Knows what it is to be owned and she will never let someone she knows be owned by someone else again. So yes. She will buy Camie’s freedom. Because she had to buy her own. I know I’m late to this video so she probably won’t see this comment-but you best believe I’ll probably bring it up when we see Nami again lol.
Also it's very telling she doesn't hesitate at all, even though she values money extremely highly. This makes it so much more impactful and telling how much MORE she values freedom - which is oh so suiting for a pirate in Luffy's crew.

Oh man, tell me about it. My brain eas working so hard for the absolute madness that would be the bidding wars between nami and freaking celestial dragons. So many episodes until the clash gave me time to speculate and create so many expectations just to be instantly crushed. My jaw was on the floor... "of course..., its so obvious, they have all the money in the world..." A masterful CRUSHING of expectations and it makes absolute sense. Just amazing.
Nami loves treasure and money, but not because she's greedy. She wants money because she associates it with literal freedom. She wanted to buy back her freedom from Arlong, and in Sabaody, she's okay using their money to buy Camie's freedom.
@@elessar6950 considering she was quick to use it for Camie she isn't. Nami has the intense aspect of greed but she isnt selfish about it. I would put frugal for her maybe instead.
We can never forgive Arlong and his crew for what they did to Nami, but what I loved about Sabody was giving us a perspective of discrimination from the fishmen point of view. Cruelty breeds more cruelty,as captain Kidd put it "When scum rules the world,only more scum is born." It is so important to understand perspectives and once we knew Hatchin's perspective we couldn't forgive him but at least understood him and sympathised with his character. I love such form of writing.
(spoiler at bottom) What also makes it easier to accept is that Hachi was portrayed as dumb and (kind of) harmless in Arlong Park, and he's the one who gets a redemption arc. He was the one who gives Zoro a ride and tells him "come again!", so he was shown to not be as devoted to racial supremacy as Arlong. It also helps that he completely accepts that he did wrong and shows shame/apologizes without (much) prodding. I know some people feel weird about how the Nami and Hachi interaction was handled, but I think it worked (especially with the context that you mentioned). SPOILER WARNING Now for when we inevitably revisit the whole Luffy/Crocodile/Vivi situation.... hopefully Oda handles that well too edit: clarity
@@jessicalee9224 Huh? No... Nami and Hachi's relationship is soooo different from Vivi and Crocodile. Hachi was in with Arlong's bad deeds but he was harmless and was really just following orders from his captain. Meanwhile Crocodile was a merciless asshole throughout Vivi's arc. It makes no sense for Vivi to forgive a person that took pleasure in letting millions die in a civil war he orchestrated himself. Crocodile's sinful deeds are leagues apart from Hachi's.
The reason why Kid's bounty is higher than Luffy's is because he has a history of killing civilians and other pirate crews (even if it's for minor slights). Kid reveals in this arc that every time he was laughed at for being a pirate or for believing in the existence of the one piece, he violently retaliated. This is important for the comparison between Luffy and Kid bc Luffy was faced with a similar situation in Jaya against Bellamy. However, instead of violently beating Bellamy after insulting him, Luffy chooses to pull a Shanks and not retaliate. The moment Luffy learned Bellamy was a pirate without true conviction, he dismissed him from his mind (insults dont matter from people who have no dreams or drive). If Kid was insulted by Bellamy at Jaya, he wouldve murdered Bellamy and burned down the place. That's the big difference between Kid and Luffy. Luffy only fights if his friends are harmed (lesson from Shanks in chapter 1) and he doesnt care about other peoples' opinions of him, especially when it comes to his dreams. If others think his dream is a joke, then he'll just ignore them. Kid can't do that. He cant stand being ridiculed.
True but something always brothered me about why did Luffy allow Bellamy to put hands on Zoro, like I understand Bellamy wasn't worth you fighting but to tell your mate just take it doesn't sit right with me

Just maybe Sanji, but Luffy knows that Zoro can 1. take it as easily as Luffy, and 2. understands why Luffy does this since he has an equally ridiculus dream. Just maybe he would have given the order to Sanji, but definitely not any other of his friends. That doesn't necessarily makes it ok, but that keeps it in line with his character

It’s almost like reliving the series for the first time, and it’s extremely satisfying to see someone else impacted the same way many of us were when we first read one piece.
I still remember reading the chapter where Kuma teleported everyone across paradise, it was rough going, wasn't expecting to feel that much emotion, and then stuff happened, and I felt even more
For some reason the reaveal of Sabaody Park hit me hard. I had thought “Arlong Park” was a stupid name and it had bothered me way to much but I also kinda thought “Going Merry” and “1000 Sunny” we dumb names so I just chalked it up to translation issues / cultural differences. Learning that Arlington was actually still just a kid at heart who just wanted to ride the Ferris Wheel was transcendent. Oda had no need to plant that seed but he did, and kept it secret for almost a decade.
There were some wet eyes, but it's easyer to cry along when someone else us crying. Also most reviewers say they cried when they read it wich offcourse makes alot of sense, but seeing Merphy actually break down while just talking about the scene hit differently, was the same with Robins backstory.
Sabaody is a turning point for both readers and the straw hats. When luffy face Moria in the last arc, he (Moria) said to luffy that you are not ready for the New World and he will loose all of his crewmates once he enters the new world, the same way as he lost his whole crew to Kaido (another pirate). that is how dangerous the New World is, he was right though.
Oda said that his third favorite moment in One Piece is when the strawhats first debark onto Sabaody and Robin feels the bubbles coming off of the mangrove roots and then wipes her hand clean on Usopp's shorts.
Clarification on Kizaru's powers: he has, indeed, a light based fruit, but it is of the same type as Smoker, Crocodile, Enel and Aokigi (a logia type fruit). This allows not only to harness the power and project an element (in this case light) but also to become the element, turning intangible and beeing able to reform himself when brocken.
Clarification: - This is Law's first ever appearance, as well as all the other Supernovas (except Luffy and Zoro, of course). - Be sure to reread X Drake's comment about the "Kumas", he mentions Kizaru and the very mysterious Vegapunk. PS: HEAVILY suggest you watch episodes 404 and 405 in subbed. The emotion of Luffy's voice actor is so heartbreaking, the whole crew disappearing is even more heartbreaking in the anime.
Another fun fact to add to the hundreds in the comment section - Oda came up with the Supernovas on the fly. He and his editor wanted to make Saboody more exciting so in the middle of the arc (right before the chapter where they're introduced) Oda came up with these 9 other pirates to integrate into the story. And to this day, it all fits seamlessly.
And I could never in the life of me could imagine how the story would be without those characters. And that's the greatest thing about Oda, he's a master at planning things and also coming up with something on the fly at the same time.
Imagine a teenage boy filled with anxiety waiting for volume 53 to be released, that's what happened to me almost 10 years ago. Blessed you who can read the next chapters immediately after. I had a fear in the back of my mind that people who read traditional literature would brush off manga or look down on it. Seeing you and Daniel enjoy One Piece makes me so happy. I don't know if it's a validation thing but I'm just so glad other people get to enjoy the beloved characters and series like us manga readers do.
I think the best way of putting this feeling watching this review is nostalgia and a bit of jealousy. I wish I had known in 2009 that this would continue but I actually thought the story was done and that was a tough month. Thank you for sharing your emotions senpai...not that I cried too.
I'll never get tired of watching you experience One Piece for the first time. Aside from just sharing in the joy of it, it's bringing back memories to when I first read these stories years and years ago. Make your videos as long as you want. If there's one thing One Piece fans know how to do, it's sticking around for the long haul.
The celestial dragons are some of the most hateable characters I've ever experienced. Their introductory scene alone makes me hate them more than many major fictional vilains.

One of my favourite Brook moments was in seabody. When him and Chopper are waiting to be picked up and usopp finds them relaxing. On the surface it’s just hilarious seeing them relaxing like they don’t have a care in the world. But if you think about why Brook is able to do that it’s kinda sad. He spent fifty years alone with only the bodies of his crew mates as company, he had a lot of time to kill.
You know... one thing that gets overshadowed in all the chaos is that Luffy *isn't even the only Strawhat* who wrecks a Celestial Dragon in one hit My boy Usopp... the man, the myth, the legend... took one out in *the best way* (ch. 503, page 12)
It was quite strange how Usopp did not receive a bigger bounty after that incident. I mean Rosward was the father of Charlos so an attack on him would be more atrocious in the Word Guverment's perspective.
@@cesarquint256 I'm fairly sure Kidd and Law were both planned, the other ones were added last minute. Oda adding all those characters and the warlords into the story as well as he does is why hes the GOAT.
This saga is EASILY the biggest emotional rollercoaster in One Piece so far. Reading the series, you think the worst is over with the Water 7 saga and then it sucker-punches you in the gut with Sabaody.
It's truly remarkable how many sucker punches Oda gets away with. At this point in the story you have probably cried over a dog, a whale, and *a boat*, you would think that would be enough to signal that this man is paid by the tear but nope! He just gets ya again!
And that’s without mentioning some future emotional moments within the same saga and post-TS that are just insane!! Dressrosa and Whole Cake send their regards.
The thing about Sanji that he always cares about everyone On skypeia he said to Usopp I don't care if you die I only care about Nami but he actually end up Saving Usopp from Enel not Nami He is willing to sacrifice himself for anyone of his friends Sanji will sacrifice himself to save Zoro his rival because at the end of the day he is his friend too
This is apparent in a later arc, where: -------SPOILER ALERT-------- Luffy tells the others that Sanji will only come back after saving the Vinsmokes and there is a moment of silence. At that point Sanji tries to stop Luffy and tells him "Wait Luffy, I dont want to put the othe- I mean, Nami-san in danger!"
SPOILERS. As much as we can dislike the overuse of the pervy gags, that's what Sanji's character is at his core and Oda emphasizes that by always making characters notice and compliment him because of that, whether is Viola after hearing him say that he won't put her tears in question or Pudding witnessing how kind he really is with her despite everything (specially as readers because we know he heard everything she said and how she mocked him).
Random tidbit of the day: Sabaody comes from the Portuguese word "sabão", which means "soap" (hence the bubbles), which is roughly (not quite, but roughly) pronounced as "sabon". That's why your little note probably said to pronounce it as "Sabondy". Also, I just love how you break down while talking about these painful moments... you're sooooo one of us now, and I love it!
The way that Oda handles the theme of slavery and racism is incredible, and very ballsy for a shonen as popular as One Piece. There is absolutely NO debate of whether it is right or wrong, NO debate on how we should view the situation: slavery is horrible, racism is a thing that should NOT be happening, and the nobles who use slaves are pieces of trash. Simple, effective, and very visually compelling. It's just amazing. And it hits not only the international public, with the Occidental history with slavery, but also the Japanese public, with the country's methods during WWII against China and Korea (including mass torture, taking sex slaves, imperialism disguised as liberation...). Again, very ballsy of Oda to tackle the subject in such a way. And as you said, the auction house reaaaaally hits hard, and makes the situation very realistic.
in one piece racism is not tackled in as simple a way as you think. chars like arlong serve the purpose to make the situation more complicated and oda's take is very nuanced which i like. ofc overall racism is horrible and oda gets that across but he does it in a subtle and nuanced way showing both sides of the coin

Fun fact about the Supernovas: Oda admitted that they were a late minute addition to the series, born out of a feeling that the arc lacked interesting characters. Not only did he added 10 interesting characters, their influence on the story further on makes one wonder what would have happened if Oda didn't had that sudden idea. Pressure makes diamonds (?

Supernova is one of the most enjoyable thing in One Piece to these day for me, Everytime they appear I am lock to the pages and I love that Oda didn't just brush all of them off
Sabaody to me really shows Odas actual understanding of writing on a micro and macro scale. Like the scene of the crew losing would normally be sad, but would always be underlined by "well they're the MCs they're obviously not dead it's no big deal" but it's STILL so crushing because Oda built Luffy so well. More so than a defeat, we are watching the protagonist live out his absolute worst fear right in front of his eyes as he's powerless to stop it. It's impressive enough that Luffy acts like a leader and advises the crew to run away and to go all out against a single pacifista. But all the development he went through just means *nothing*. All those villains he faced who said he wasn't ready for the new world were absolutely correct and it's frankly a miracle he didn't lose everyone to Kizaru
one of the thing often overlooked is when Zoro brought the injured man to the hospital and the doctor asks if the injured man was a slave because the price for treating a slave is expensive so BETTER BUY A NEW ONE!??!?!?!???
Honestly the fact that Chopper went into monster form again, and in front of everyone shows how desperate that situation was. In Enies Lobby (i forgot who he told) but he told someone to “make sure no one comes in here” meaning he didn’t want anyone to see what it is he could turn into, but here he voluntarily eats the three rumble balls because everyone’s losing

Ok Merphy there’s 3 types of devil fruits Logia: think of crocodile, Engel, and kizaru. Therese let you turn into an element and they can morph they’re body and are immune to *almost* all damage Zoan: think dalton, Rob Licci, Kaku. These let you turn into an anime Paramecia: think everything else because it’s just whatever wacky power Oda wanted to put in the story
Kizaru’s power is functionally the same as Ace and Aokiji’s. He can generate, manipulate, and transform into light itself like they can do with fire and ice respectively.
Spoiler She is gonna break at MF.... Especially how Oda makes you realy feel happy in a few chapters and dickslaps you right in the face a couple of chapters later. Same with Merry, yes she's back and she saved the crew im soo happy, 2 chapters later balling my eyes out couse of a burning boat...
Usopp being one of the weak, the most logical, the most scaredy cat actually manned up to save Zoro, one of the strongest trio, the trio monster. He actually face to face with PX, trying to save Zoro
Notice before Nami's disappearance she uttered "help me..", the same plea she uttered at Arlong Park to a Luffy who was strong enough to save her then. In Sabaody however, her plea for help was left unanswered because Luffy was himself helpless to save himself much less her. Moriah's warning to Luffy about losing his crew came earlier and hit out rubber boy like a tone of bricks.
The Supernovas were all made up in a week by oda because he thought the arc needed more. I find that interesting. Kid has the higher bounty and I think it was explained why. I wont spoiler it here.
On a similar note, the Warlords weren't in his original plan at all (back when he intended OP to only last 5 years or so) Basically, OP's massive scale and intricate worldbuilding surprised even the author, lol
Well it was the editor/publishers who gave the suggestion about the supernovas from what I remember. He certainly didn't plan on having so many of them at the time.
One Piece is so emotional. It's an interesting contrast to the art style. I personally think they work together really well since the style allows the characters to be so expressive (similar to TLOZ Windwaker). It can be super sad, dark, violent and still fun and wholesome.

One of my favorite small moments in this arc is when everybody is freaking out over Rayleigh being Roger's first mate there is a panel of Brook saying "Huh, I think I heard of a rookie called Gold Roger. Or maybe I didn't." and then he goes back to eating his boiled beans.

FUN FACT: Rayleigh first appearance was way back in chapter 19, he was the one getting angry at Buggy and Shanks
Lots of people will say Oda just used a character's design again to retrofit Rayleigh into the story. But there's an SBS BEFORE Rayleigh was introduced in the manga, that Oda says he planned all of Roger stuff with Buggy and Shanks and told the anime team to not make "that person" be the Captain in the flashback and we'll see him in the future, which we did in Sabaody. That specific scene even reappeared in the recent Chapters.

I can see the moment when they find the One Piece, and 17 chapters of info dump just answering questions seeded throughout the story, at least half of them, as tons of them won't have an answer in Raftel
Pay attention to the way Robin addresses other people. Even if everyone on the crew is calling someone by name Robin will cheerfully refer to them by whatever silly nickname Luffy gives them.

I love this arc because when the Straw Hats try to repurchase Camie, they fail. As a result, the only thing they can do is tear the auction hall down and fight back. The whole scenario gets at the idea that you can't solve slavery (or corruption in general) by playing by the system's rules. Rather you must obliterate it from the root.
And unfortunately you can't necessarily brute force it either judging by the end of the arc. Luffy obliterates that shithead and, as a result, nearly cost him his crew.
And we yet to see how Oda decides to go through with this and resolve this in the end.
@@leakypeach6250 Doing the right thing, and doing it by brute force would both lead into consecuencies. They did save Kamie. They did save Hachi. They did destroy the auction house, that was neverrebuilt again (maybe it was replaced by another ones, that may be true). But they had to pay a prize for doing the right thing. And doing it by force.
In the end, they don't lament doing the right thing or how they did it. They lament not being strong enough to soften the aftershocks.
I think one of the reasons that the One Piece community are so adamant about not spoiling anything for new readers is the scene in this arc where Rayleigh admits he knows all the answers and Luffy’s response is basically to scream “NO SPOILERS”.
Like Luffy, One Piece fans want the answers that Roger’s crew found, but you can be sure we plan on enjoying the journey to get them as much as the answers themselves.

Technically not, since cannibalism would imply eating someone or something of your own species. Hachan is a fishman, not an octopus, so it's not cannibalism. He's obviously related to them, so it's actually more similar to humans eating bush meat (which is still disturbing and kind of weird, but not cannibalism).

I like that in the last arc moria, who got wrecked and lost everyone in his crew when he went to the new world, told Luffy he wasn't strong enough. He was 100% right and knew what he was talking about.

Back in Alabasta, Sir Crocodile told him basically the same thing, and Luffy just brushed over. This is the payoff to all those years.

Ace being in danger isn't new, and he hates it when Luffy gets dragged into his problems. Of course Luffy would laugh off him being in danger and just trust him to get out of it on his own.
Fun fact: Oda does plan most of his writing and story in advance by several arcs but the supernovas introduced in this arc we’re made last minute because Oda felt the arc would be more empty without adding other major pirates since the island is supposed to be a main hub for pirate crews

One thing i really appreciate is how Oda called his shot here Babe Ruth-style. For all the fretting about spoilers, Oda will often outright *tell* you what's gonna happen, yet still make it come as a total shock
Last arc Moria straight-up told Luffy to his face that _exactly this thing_ is going to happen. He's not strong enough, and he's going to lose his crew.

and people say thriller bark is not part of the saga. There is a thematic throughline, we get yonko setup before seeing a yonko in action and Kuma is a major player trough the whole saga. Yes it was a big arc with a climax of its own, but so is WCI and its still par of the vs4yonko saga

Thriller Bark’s focus on Zombies and “living dead” is absolutely thematic on man levels.
Firstly it’s dramatic irony for Moria himself.
He is a beaten pirate. He lost everything. His drive to improve. His treasure. His crew. And his believe on dreams.
Due to the way OnePiece is written, without those things, he might as well be dead. In other words, he could be seen as a dead man walking himself.
Brook has died as well. Both thematically like Moria and literally. He is literally just a moving corpse. But, he regained a crew and the will to chase his dream. Which makes him both thematically and literally live/alive again.
The focus around death is also a thematic warning for Luffy. Because this is the punishment for failure. This is what chasing to become pirate king gets you. A dead crew and eternal loneliness.

This arc was the first one to really show that the Marines when they are serious are no joke. The way Kizaru basically manhandled 4 of the supernovas on his own without any effort and how the Pacifistas were all so strong it took multiple people to even slow them down just shows that the Marines are a real threat. Before now the Marines were kind of just there, but this arc shows how truly dangerous they can be. It makes sense that the strongest marines would be closer to the Redline and in the New World since that is where the strongest threats are.
I mean there was aokiji before but it is certainly true that the stakes were risen in sabaody

Yeah, it's like when he ran trying to save Robin and misses her by a hair due to the draw back of Gear 2nd, the very same technique he had used to save her in the past.
And there's a panel in the next arc that clearly shows that Nami's disappearance may have hit Luffy the hardest given their history. Strong World -- which is written by Oda -- expands on that really well.

Merphy's voice breaking during the disappearance scene actually made me teae up, its such an insanely upsetting scene 😭
One note about bounties: the bounty doesn’t always necessarily reflect what someone does so much as the level of threat they are to the world government. Think like Robin with a bounty as a child. She was a threat because of knowledge not necessarily what she had done.
Plus Straw Hats latest deeds were covered up at this point, they didnt get new bouties after defeating Moria
It’s honestly kinda amazing that Kidd Slaughter entire island communities almost everywhere he went, actively going out his way to kill civilians and marines alike. And yet his bounty was still just barley higher then Luffy’s, a happy go lucky rubber boy who just wanted to see the world with his friends. Their world is so fucked up.

I startet watching the anime in 2003 when I was 8 and reading the manga in 2006. I'm 26 now...
We can never forgive Arlong and his crew for what they did to Nami, but what I loved about Sabody was giving us a perspective of discrimination from the fishmen point of view. Cruelty breeds more cruelty,as captain Kidd put it "When scum rules the world,only more scum is born." It is so important to understand perspectives and once we knew Hatchin's perspective we couldn't forgive him but at least understood him and sympathised with his character. I love such form of writing.

What also makes it easier to accept is that Hachi was portrayed as dumb and (kind of) harmless in Arlong Park, and he's the one who gets a redemption arc. He was the one who gives Zoro a ride and tells him "come again!", so he was shown to not be as devoted to racial supremacy as Arlong. It also helps that he completely accepts that he did wrong and shows shame/apologizes without (much) prodding. I know some people feel weird about how the Nami and Hachi interaction was handled, but I think it worked (especially with the context that you mentioned).

Hachi was in with Arlong's bad deeds but he was harmless and was really just following orders from his captain. Meanwhile Crocodile was a merciless asshole throughout Vivi's arc. It makes no sense for Vivi to forgive a person that took pleasure in letting millions die in a civil war he orchestrated himself. Crocodile's sinful deeds are leagues apart from Hachi's.
Arlong Park is called that and Shaped like it is for a reason
The reason why Kid's bounty is higher than Luffy's is because he has a history of killing civilians and other pirate crews (even if it's for minor slights).
Kid reveals in this arc that every time he was laughed at for being a pirate or for believing in the existence of the one piece, he violently retaliated.
This is important for the comparison between Luffy and Kid bc Luffy was faced with a similar situation in Jaya against Bellamy. However, instead of violently beating Bellamy after insulting him, Luffy chooses to pull a Shanks and not retaliate.
The moment Luffy learned Bellamy was a pirate without true conviction, he dismissed him from his mind (insults dont matter from people who have no dreams or drive).
If Kid was insulted by Bellamy at Jaya, he wouldve murdered Bellamy and burned down the place.
That's the big difference between Kid and Luffy.
Luffy only fights if his friends are harmed (lesson from Shanks in chapter 1) and he doesnt care about other peoples' opinions of him, especially when it comes to his dreams. If others think his dream is a joke, then he'll just ignore them.
Kid can't do that. He cant stand being ridiculed.

For some reason the reaveal of Sabaody Park hit me hard. I had thought “Arlong Park” was a stupid name and it had bothered me way to much but I also kinda thought “Going Merry” and “1000 Sunny” we dumb names so I just chalked it up to translation issues / cultural differences. Learning that Arlington was actually still just a kid at heart who just wanted to ride the Ferris Wheel was transcendent. Oda had no need to plant that seed but he did, and kept it secret for almost a decade.
Arlong becomes a much more interesting character after Fishman Island arc.

Sabaody is a turning point for both readers and the straw hats. When luffy face Moria in the last arc, he (Moria) said to luffy that you are not ready for the New World and he will loose all of his crewmates once he enters the new world, the same way as he lost his whole crew to Kaido (another pirate). that is how dangerous the New World is, he was right though.

Clarification on Kizaru's powers: he has, indeed, a light based fruit, but it is of the same type as Smoker, Crocodile, Enel and Aokigi (a logia type fruit). This allows not only to harness the power and project an element (in this case light) but also to become the element, turning intangible and beeing able to reform himself when brocken.
Clarification:
- This is Law's first ever appearance, as well as all the other Supernovas (except Luffy and Zoro, of course).
- Be sure to reread X Drake's comment about the "Kumas", he mentions Kizaru and the very mysterious Vegapunk.
PS: HEAVILY suggest you watch episodes 404 and 405 in subbed. The emotion of Luffy's voice actor is so heartbreaking, the whole crew disappearing is even more heartbreaking in the anime.

The Japanese VO for One Piece is god tier. Worth watching just for the emotions they bring to the story.
Another fun fact to add to the hundreds in the comment section - Oda came up with the Supernovas on the fly. He and his editor wanted to make Saboody more exciting so in the middle of the arc (right before the chapter where they're introduced) Oda came up with these 9 other pirates to integrate into the story. And to this day, it all fits seamlessly.
And I could never in the life of me could imagine how the story would be without those characters.
And that's the greatest thing about Oda, he's a master at planning things and also coming up with something on the fly at the same time.
Imagine a teenage boy filled with anxiety waiting for volume 53 to be released, that's what happened to me almost 10 years ago. Blessed you who can read the next chapters immediately after.

One of my favourite Brook moments was in seabody. When him and Chopper are waiting to be picked up and usopp finds them relaxing. On the surface it’s just hilarious seeing them relaxing like they don’t have a care in the world. But if you think about why Brook is able to do that it’s kinda sad. He spent fifty years alone with only the bodies of his crew mates as company, he had a lot of time to kill.

This saga is EASILY the biggest emotional rollercoaster in One Piece so far. Reading the series, you think the worst is over with the Water 7 saga and then it sucker-punches you in the gut with Sabaody.
Craziest part is this still isn't rock bottom.
It's truly remarkable how many sucker punches Oda gets away with. At this point in the story you have probably cried over a dog, a whale, and *a boat*, you would think that would be enough to signal that this man is paid by the tear but nope! He just gets ya again!

As much as we can dislike the overuse of the pervy gags, that's what Sanji's character is at his core and Oda emphasizes that by always making characters notice and compliment him because of that, whether is Viola after hearing him say that he won't put her tears in question or Pudding witnessing how kind he really is with her despite everything (specially as readers because we know he heard everything she said and how she mocked him).
Random tidbit of the day: Sabaody comes from the Portuguese word "sabão", which means "soap" (hence the bubbles), which is roughly (not quite, but roughly) pronounced as "sabon". That's why your little note probably said to pronounce it as "Sabondy".

The way that Oda handles the theme of slavery and racism is incredible, and very ballsy for a shonen as popular as One Piece.
There is absolutely NO debate of whether it is right or wrong, NO debate on how we should view the situation: slavery is horrible, racism is a thing that should NOT be happening, and the nobles who use slaves are pieces of trash.
Simple, effective, and very visually compelling. It's just amazing.
And it hits not only the international public, with the Occidental history with slavery, but also the Japanese public, with the country's methods during WWII against China and Korea (including mass torture, taking sex slaves, imperialism disguised as liberation...).
Again, very ballsy of Oda to tackle the subject in such a way.
And as you said, the auction house reaaaaally hits hard, and makes the situation very realistic.
in one piece racism is not tackled in as simple a way as you think. chars like arlong serve the purpose to make the situation more complicated and oda's take is very nuanced which i like. ofc overall racism is horrible and oda gets that across but he does it in a subtle and nuanced way showing both sides of the coin

Supernova is one of the most enjoyable thing in One Piece to these day for me, Everytime they appear I am lock to the pages and I love that Oda didn't just brush all of them off
Sabaody to me really shows Odas actual understanding of writing on a micro and macro scale. Like the scene of the crew losing would normally be sad, but would always be underlined by "well they're the MCs they're obviously not dead it's no big deal" but it's STILL so crushing because Oda built Luffy so well. More so than a defeat, we are watching the protagonist live out his absolute worst fear right in front of his eyes as he's powerless to stop it. It's impressive enough that Luffy acts like a leader and advises the crew to run away and to go all out against a single pacifista. But all the development he went through just means *nothing*. All those villains he faced who said he wasn't ready for the new world were absolutely correct and it's frankly a miracle he didn't lose everyone to Kizaru

one of the thing often overlooked is when Zoro brought the injured man to the hospital and the doctor asks if the injured man was a slave because the price for treating a slave is expensive so BETTER BUY A NEW ONE!??!?!?!???

Honestly the fact that Chopper went into monster form again, and in front of everyone shows how desperate that situation was. In Enies Lobby (i forgot who he told) but he told someone to “make sure no one comes in here” meaning he didn’t want anyone to see what it is he could turn into, but here he voluntarily eats the three rumble balls because everyone’s losing

I too was shocked when Luffy didn’t instantly go after Ace, but it’s almost like Luffy could not possibly believe that his big bad brother could be in serious trouble. Almost like it was impossible.
Of course. Ace is much stronger than Ace and the one who always protect Luffy so for Luffy even when he saw Ace's vivre card he though that if he tried to do smth Ace would be very angry and he would solve his problems on his own. Because it's Ace. It's so sad. Luffy had no idea...
Like Luffy said he believed that Ace was just living his own adventures, Luffy risks his life and gets heavily injured in basically every arc and so he expects that Ace’s adventure has similar dangers, but he believes in Ace and that he would overcome all obstacles just like him and his crew
@@mesan4641 Yea of course that's it. I also think that a huge role play that Luffy know that Ace was much stronger than him and he was the one who always protect him. It's cute how he didn't doubt that Ace is so strong and would be okay. He respect his older brother so much. And it's cute that it was Ace who saw Luffy's vivrecard in such bad condition he will immediately go. I don't mean that Ace is like better. No they just have this amazing younger/older brother chemistry. And I love it
they didnt know he was captured. the albatross delivered the newspaper only to moria after the fight. if luffy knew, he would immediately go and save ace. and i dont want to spoil what happens next. but if you know, you know. if not, you'll see.

Ok Merphy there’s 3 types of devil fruits
Logia: think of crocodile, Engel, and kizaru. Therese let you turn into an element and they can morph they’re body and are immune to *almost* all damage
Zoan: think dalton, Rob Licci, Kaku. These let you turn into an anime
Paramecia: think everything else because it’s just whatever wacky power Oda wanted to put in the story
This arc is one of my favorites but it was a hard arc to read indeed
In reference to the Rayleigh conversation with the straw hats: you NEED to watch Usopp asking his question in the anime. That’s all I’ll say.
Kizaru’s power is functionally the same as Ace and Aokiji’s. He can generate, manipulate, and transform into light itself like they can do with fire and ice respectively.
Merphy is becoming like Luffy... anyone cool and interesting should join the crew :3

Usopp being one of the weak, the most logical, the most scaredy cat actually manned up to save Zoro, one of the strongest trio, the trio monster. He actually face to face with PX, trying to save Zoro

Notice before Nami's disappearance she uttered "help me..", the same plea she uttered at Arlong Park to a Luffy who was strong enough to save her then. In Sabaody however, her plea for help was left unanswered because Luffy was himself helpless to save himself much less her. Moriah's warning to Luffy about losing his crew came earlier and hit out rubber boy like a tone of bricks.
The Supernovas were all made up in a week by oda because he thought the arc needed more. I find that interesting. Kid has the higher bounty and I think it was explained why. I wont spoiler it here.
On a similar note, the Warlords weren't in his original plan at all (back when he intended OP to only last 5 years or so)

Well it was the editor/publishers who gave the suggestion about the supernovas from what I remember. He certainly didn't plan on having so many of them at the time.
Really makes you wonder what the plan was before them, epically a certain long threaded arc.
One Piece is so emotional. It's an interesting contrast to the art style. I personally think they work together really well since the style allows the characters to be so expressive (similar to TLOZ Windwaker). It can be super sad, dark, violent and still fun and wholesome.
