A lot of people don't realize that Vivi teaching Luffy to bow his head instead of resorting to violence comes back around in Amazon Lily where Luffy immediately bows his head for Boa Hancock to free the Amazons who helped him. Showing that he learned from Vivi. It's a small bit of character development that gets overlooked.

Something that I love to think about is how the crew is unintentionally creating a kind of mythology around themselves. You catch a glimpse in Loguetown when a huge crowd of people saw Luffy about to be executed and saved by a literal lightning strike. We see it later on at the end of Skypeia with Luffy's shadow projected onto the clouds from above. Shooting the flag at Enies Lobby, punching a celestial dragon, busting into the paramount war only to become a major player backed by Whitebeard himself.
And we see it with Laboon as well. As a completely unintended side-effect of Luffy inspiring Laboon to keep on living, EVERY crew to enter the grand line after them who happens to see this massive whale will see the straw hat symbol (misshapenly) painted across his snout. It really makes this story feel like it's a legend in the making, the thing future generations in this world would hear about and think 'that has to be exaggerated or metaphorical'. I just think it adds so much to the sense of grandeur.

Wow, this is a great comment. I never think of the crew actions in this way. The beautiful part, now that you mentioned, is the fact that all of it is unintentional. They become legendary figures because of the consequences of their combined actions. Actions that are, almost every time, really chaotic , sometimes unintended and even selfish, yet, the final consequences, leave them (specially Luffy) as this kind of allegory or emblem of epics that changed the world (into a "dawn") for better that could be only atributted to legendary figures. That is really cool, your comment made me revisit a lot of moments with a different perspective.

He creates so many mysteries that the longer it goes the more reveals are will naturally happen...it's like the opposite of science fiction where instead of mixing fantasy with RL science he builds reasonable sciences in his fantasy world. That's why I have an issue with Merphy overusing the word "absurdism" in relation to OP because it tells me she isn't 100% invested and hasn't really understood yet that every obvious "absurdity" is actually a piece of world building that she kinda refuses to accept...(cognitive dissonance?)
Watching/reading One Piece really allows to not question Oda and it's best experienced that way, or in other words you should "take it serious!"...but Merphy's bias as a book reader is very refreshing and interesting compared to the common powerscalers/shounen-fans who are mostly in it for the fights and only talk about their headcanon.

To add about Nami’s character, you can now see, post-Arlong, her absolute trust in Luffy. It hit me the most in Little Garden. She was so panicked about dying on that wax service, but the moment Luffy arrived, she was calm and knew it was gonna be okay. Even Vivi noted it. And it’s even better in Skypiea, especially at the climax. Boy do I love Luffy and Nami’s relationship.

The theme of how water/water consumption was used in Alabasta is one of my favorite things ever. On the way to Yuba Luffy was complaining, chugging/wasting water. He's used to it always being around. But when he meets Toto and sees/helps him work hard for just a small spring of water he treasures it. And it becomes the key to unveiling Croc's weaknesses and helping them fight him.

Tying this with the theme of loyalty and trust with water; Toto-ojisan's undying loyalty led him to dig water, Crocodile's untrusting nature and his ability to steal water, the whole nation's civil war relating the lack of water to their trust to the king, and finally the first rainfall after Crocodile's defeat which cleared the sandstorm and allowed everyone to hear Vivi's cries. Nami sometimes is really given a hard time by people thinking she's just greedy and cold hearted, specially this early on...but like I think money was her safety net, and really wrapped up with her trauma, and it was the only type of power she could have growing up, and what she thought she could use to protect people. Like there are several times that she demands high interest payments, but she never actually follows through, and she's totally willing to give it all up to protect someone. Camie being the best example of this. Then she also uses money to show she cares with Lola at the end of Thriller Bark.... and yeah, this is longer than the 2 sentences I was planning on writing.... so I'll end here lol

Toto-ojisan! He's such an underrated character. From his first appearance being all mad at them for asking about the rebel army thinking they wanted to join, knowing that it is his son Koza that leads them to their collective backstory and why he trusts the king so much even now after 3 years without rain. He's also the one who gave Luffy the small barrel of water that allowed him to physically touch Crocodile in their first fight.
Oda creates so many characters but then he gives extra attention to one or two small side characters each arc and really makes them shine.

She straight up calls him a failure for putting his crew at risk because of how impulsive he is and how quickly he gets into a fight. He listens to her and bows down to the people of drum island and asks for help. Their main aim was finding a doctor to treat Nami and violence wouldn’t achieve that.

Fun fact about Oda and Vivi:
It is absolutely true Oda plans and lays groundwork for many things years in advance, it’s very clear the main strokes and lots of little things have been well prepared for a long time - but he also gives himself the flexibility to be creative in the moment and come up with new things. Vivi’s initial appearance as Miss Wednesday was actually all she was initially going to be - a two-bit, minor gag villain with Mr. 9. At that point he had some major throughlines for Alabasta worked out, but on a creative whim he decided she “actually looked like a Princess” and went from there. It’s funny because you can sort of see how she really isn’t portrayed sympathetically for that first chapter or so, but I think Oda played it off well.
Similarly, the immensely iconic silent farewell with the marks of friendship to cap off the arc and saga was something Oda came up with the day of writing that chapter.

To me, it could be the best story ever told in fiction, especially if oda ( the freaking madlad ) really manages to make marineford look cute and really go somewhat dark when telling the void century flashback.... That final arc is what gonna put it above the rest for me..... And i believe in oda that he'll give this series an ending that is truly legendary... Even the end of the arcs in one piece is sooo climactic and awe-inspiring than a lot of endings that novels have, if an arc ending can be that great, thinking about the finale is giving me goosebumps... The greatest Climax to end all climaxes, and " what is one piece " is like one of the greatest mystery in fiction, i haven't been waiting for an mystery to be revealed this badly in my life ever, but oda made us all go nuts for years over a fictional mystery😂.... He puts a lot of care into his characters and leave options to link to bigger things that he thinks later on. It makes the re-read a lot more enjoyable to catch the little moments that he planted. His style is a big inspiration for anyone who wants to write stories that start small and slowly unveil big payoffs.

@@Kazumo I'm eating it up more because I'm enjoying it a lot. I'm on the Sky island Saga at the end of the Jaya Arc.
So far I've really liked. I don't like pirates so I never had an interest for One Piece (paired with my childish rivalry of being a Naruto fan when I was a kid lol), but I really like the tone of the series. My favorites are the same as Merphy, same for the least as I don't care for Usoop at all, we could leave him on an island and I wouldn't miss. I did wish Vivi had come with the crew even knowing she wouldn't but hey Nico has been fun to read so far. I really like Luffy he has has that random innocence that reminds me of Gon (HxH), but more intense.
Like Merphy, I liked East Blue more than Arabasta. Arabasta felt more like a side track (I know it's far from it), but you know, on East Blue each arc brought something new to the crew which made it more dynamic but I still liked Arabasta regardless.
I also have the same difficulty as Merphy to just roll with stuff, at this point I'm worried about stakes (I was told it gets better as the series goes on), because during the whole final battle I feel little urge or tension as I knew characters being stabbed through and losing a ton of blood would mean nothing even if the levels of blood have been bigger than in East Blue so yeah, on every fight I just kind of skim because of the major lack of tension.
How come Usoop and the deer had the best mini boss fight? Nami's was really plot armor heavy, there's no way the 2nd most powerful in the rankin of ladies would lose to her. Zoro also just had super strength out of nowhere to lifted a building (unless I missed something), and the resolution of him being able to cut through metal was literally nothing, he did it because the plot needed him to, it's even worse than Nami's.
But yeah, overall I've been liking it so far.
(Btw how the hell Vivi's guard survived that explosion from Whisky Peak and appeared 100% fine at the final battle?)

Something that I just remember of Alabasta and Ace's appearance, is that the anime added basically filler episodes to Ace being there with the crew much longer than the manga. And it is one of my most favorite filler of One Piece because it makes Ace character just a bit more valuable to the story to me (way before the whole nightmare with his capture began i mean, i love those little moments they added in the anime). Another thing you mightve missed is at the beginning of the Alabaster arc itself, Bon Clay makes a point that friendship is still friendship even though they mightve just met each other. Its played off like a silly moment, but this theme was carried over into Impel Down when Luffy and Bon Clay reunited to be friends yet again - which also didn't last very long lol.

I also feel like having Luffy's background re-contextualises so much - like how much he has to learn (and is willing to learn) when you realise how new to leadership he is at this point (he was the youngest brother) plus this is him coming off being the only person of his age group from what we saw for 3 years and now he has a crew and he's learning to lead them. Also seeing how empathetic he is after everything he went through as a kid to emotional pain, and also his attitude towards physical pain like how he doesn't seem to think its as big a deal cause he's so used to it (oof) - also after seeing his and Aces backstory I loved how happy they were to see each other again, now that we know its been three years and just seeing all the love and history that there is there - and Ace's impeccable manners and knowing that he actively learnt these so that he could properly thank Shanks for saving Luffy because as his big brother he had decided this was now his responsibility - man this story is so deep I love it! and knowing part of Ace's happiness (as he tells Jimbe in impel down) is that Luffy has friends that are so loyal to him and that he is happy and okay, because Ace knows how much Luffy can't bear to be alone 😭(this is such a good story!!! - literally only discovered it, I think in May this year, thank you Merphy for making me wonder what was so special about this that you decided to dedicate Friday's to it, now I know 😊)

i think something even she missed was how by helping vivi luffy meets and ends up recruiting robin someone he has to have to get to his dream/goal cause she is one of the rare few people in their world that can find one piece on her own that has not already seen it ala rayleigh and roger's main remaining alive crew...so it all worked out for his selfless act...robin joins at the end of this arc which is huge obviously for the story going forward to the water 7 saga...the way nami did early on at orangetown despite her own true arc coming later at arlong park where the crew fights for her like robin at enie's lobby where she fully joins after a lackluster recruitment the way nami's was also not very special at first...thats a key piece oda makes sure to add in alabasta to make it not just some side quest like say skypiea kinda was at the time that arc came out before he fleshed it out more after that arc...

Oda didn't really want to do it, but One Piece was still fairly new and could have been easily chopped back then. Fact about Nefertari Vivi a.k.a Miss Wednesday, she wasn't supposed to be the princess of Alabasta in fact she's a lucky accident by Oda
    Oda stated :
To be honest, I have lots of such characters, but if I have to choose one, it must be VIVI!! No, she was Miss Wednesday.
At first she appeared as an agent of Baroque Works, but I didn't think more about her. But, one time I drew Miss Wednesday with her hair down, and found, "Ohh she looks like a princess!"
I got the plan of the Alabasta Kingdom arc a while before. And then what will it be like if this girl would be the princess of Alabasta?
The Alabasta arc started like that. For that reason, still beloved by fans, the character, Nefertari Vivi was born.

I think Oda avoids heavy-handedness in a lot of situations because of who much of the target audience is, teens who on some level are around for a fun adventure and some good fights. These layers add a lot for older readers though, and is IMO what allows his story to remain relevant to us over such a long period of time despite how much we may have aged out of other manga. Many of us started this as young teens, and are now pushing 30, some are much older! It hasn't alienated the older audiences though, because it stays evolving and maturing in different ways with enough subtext, parallels and themes to be interesting.

    • @bethanybrookes8479

thats probably why it is the best selling manga and second best selling comic of all time. oda managed to create a story with such widespread appeal to so many people in the world, and kept it going strong for so long. there are people out there saying MHA or demon slayer could out sell it, but personally, i dont think the series have it in them. MHA is approaching its end and once a series ends, they start to loose relevance, even if they are super popular, purely because there is just no new content to keep people coming back to buy more. and i have seen people grow out of it, or loose interest, which is something i only see very rarely in the one piece fanbase. demon slayer is actually finished, and i heard a few people having complaints about the end, which is also another thing that stops people from wanting to buy a series. people hear the negative reviews and go "it probably isnt worth it", and even over he last year or so since it ended, i have seen and heard less about it, even with the new season of the anime coming out at present.
for a series to get high sales, it needs to have appeal and staying power, and thats what one piece has in spades above the rest of the contenders.
the clever balance of serious and comedic widens the age range it appeals to, its not so serious that a younger audience can't enjoy it, and its not so childish or full of plot holes that an older audience or a long time fan would struggle to enjoy it. it has a diverse cast that contains appealing characters for so many people to latch onto. its got the length and the maintained quality that makes people keep coming back for more, and its got the rereadability to keep it relevant probably long after it's inevatble end. and it has so many features that appeal to so many different types of fans, it has mysteries for the theorists, adventure for the romantics, comedy and action for the people who like hat, and is suprisingly deep for people who like to dig down into characters and scenes in order to analyse it.
and just he fact that in less than 25 years, it managed to surpass comics that have been going for nearly a century should be proof enough that surpassing one piece is a difficult feat.

@@bethanybrookes8479 I think the weakness of the manga medium/shounen genre is that adaptations are animes. I say this as a response to "when things end they start to lose relevance". I feel that is something unique to manga/anime. I honestly don't feel we see that so much in novels or standard tv shows. React youtubers consistently watch old things, and people go back and watch things they never saw like Breaking Bad or other masterpieces or underrated gems (think Firefly) all the time, while novels are timeless. New readers aren't *just* jumping on the hot new thing every other month. They still read the classics, the bests in the meantime, of genres they enjoy. The release schedules of manga/anime inherently promote a culture of largely consuming only while it's ongoing.
Importantly, western adaptations reinvigorate complete series', even when they're weaker, because they can spark interest in books. While mangas are adapted often within a year or two of publication while still ongoing. They overlap, and are pretty 1:1 recreations of an already visual medium. An anime IMO offers a lot less to a manga than what a GOOD adaptation of a novel *can* provide as a visual medium, the main problem is that they're few and far between.

NOW he did make up the rules for it a lot later and it wasnt concrete but the man knew the entire story from day 1 and while hes extended it way longer than even he could imagine you cant believe he put in logia fruit and not already had a way to beat them.
the rules for it and how it exactly works have been modified and changed and refined sure the story is way longer than even oda ever imagine he had to tweak things. but the idea of haki has always been a thing. its inconsistant at first only because it was as stated a 5 year manga so however it originally was going to work was much different. But even in skypia we had montra which given oda explains everything was always going to get some sort of meaning and it became observation haki.
alabasta was the first real arc where oda probably realized oh shit this is going to be a longer series than i planned. so while haki deserves a lot of hate its not a perfect system it wasnt just thrown in last second to solve a problem it was always the solution the rules just got modified a little.

I've been following One Piece since 2010, it has been probably the most influential fictional work in my life. I've done the reads, re-reads and re-re-reads. I get really glad when I see people discovering it for the first time, since even back in 2010 it was pretty hard to recommend due to the length. So thanks for this!

I don’t have enough words to describe how much I love Nami. She is one of my top characters.

Zoro's reaction to Vivi's revealing Croc's name is one of the regular japanese joke/comedy format. In this case, he's playing a straight role pointing to how ridiculous it is to spill out deep secret, while Nami playing as a regular role with regular shock reaction.

Also me: an hour+ long one piece video from Merphy, awesome. *happily starts folding*

Crocodile's defeat is my absolute favorite moment in the entire anime - all 987 episodes - due entirely to the accompaniment of Dvořák's New World Symphony. Can't be topped.
