    Finally! This is what I've been wanting to know about these machines. I'm a card maker and I'm tired of purchasing the coordinating dies as they are so expensive. This is what I wanted to see. I can't thank you enough. I'll be saving up for one of these. I wonder how many people have purchased one and never used it or rarely used it. Thank you for this video. It really did help. Maybe I can sell some of my coordinating dies and just have the basic shapes. That would be great.

    Great video and I totally agree on the machines. I have a CM350, the Scan n Cut 2 that I’ve had for years. Except for the auto adjusting blade I really see no advantages to the DX series. From all the videos I’ve watched it seems much more complicated and I’ve even seen experts who say the 350 cuts out intricate designs more accurately. I seldom add the border and I’ve had it even cut out the individual whiskers on Tim Holtz Crazy Dog stamped images. I also use it to cut tiny label bands for my 1/12 scale miniatures. I previously had a Cricut Explore Air and feel like it doesn’t even compare to the flexibility and ease of use of the Scan n Cut.

    Which model do you recommend of the Brother Scan and Cut? Do the DX versions do cut the stamped images?

    • @TerryCowans
      @TerryCowans  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I recommend the CM350. All models will cut stamped images. Here's a chart that summarizes the models & features. I've never found the DX85C model for sale. I made this chart after reviewing the Brother website. My chart -- reddinup.com/scanncut/patterns/
      I do no believe the extra cost of the DX is worth the price difference (detects thickness & quieter). Plus the DX is larger and newer, they may need to fix the problems with it (mat & scanning issues).

      I'd say that if you have a Cricut, the Brother machine & software mechanically work very similarly to the Cricut. So if you are comfortable with your Cricut, then the Brother will come easy to use.
      But keep in mind that they do different things. The Brother's built-in scanner is amazing for cutting around images. And while there are many built-in images, but I still use my Cricut for images and welding letters for scrapbook titles.

    I bought mine a few years ago on sale from Costco online. I'm not a member of Costco so I think I paid like 7%more than a member would. I believe I paid $174 or there about. So definitely look at those wholesale clubs to get the best price!
    At the time I did the math and it was cheaper to pay the 7 % than to get the membership just for the machine but it may be worth it in a different situation so definitely check!!

      Thank you so much for your kind words! That chart is the most recent one on the Brother website, and I swear it changes all the time! Not quite sure of their numbering system, or when they drop off the models! I'm just familiar with the 350 and 650, so I'm not much help. I will, however, say that you need a SOLID line around the image and a well-lit area for the scanner to do it's work. When I first started I didn't realize this, and I wanted to throw it out of the window because I could scan something three times and get three different results. I hope this helps! Good luck!!

      The newer Brother Scan N Cut (DX models) have a "HALF CUT" feature that will allow you to automatically cut sticker paper. See this video -- th-cam.com/video/Frp99b-AM0Q/w-d-xo.html -- where she printed on mat sticker paper, scans, then half cuts so that it does not cut thru the page.
      On the older machines you can decrease the pressure and test that you only cut so far into your paper. The scan n cut is excellent at scanning your images and cutting around them. You can specify the distance of the border around your image too.

      The Brother does not require a computer, so that's a plus. It has many built in basic shapes. If there are specific graphics that you like, I would suggest the Cricut machine. The Cricut Joy is wonderfully easy to use (with a phone app), but if you need to cut large images, I would suggest the Cricut Explore Air machine.
      My recommendation is to look over the shapes that you want to use, then decide if you have the patience to learn how to get the shape into the Brother machine, or use the Cricut software (can be your phone or tablet or computer) to cut your shapes.

    I hate this machine. It's a hit N miss. I've followed many directions over and over to very poor results
