Right at the starting gate people were knocking this camera and I have no idea why. I still use this camera everyday. On a pro shoot last week: A7II with a 1.5, 5DMk3 with a 2.8 and VG30 with a 1.8 prime. Kept right up with the full frames. I've knocked it around in hard cases, taken it on planes, stuffed in in suitcases, even dropped it once. This camcorder is still a winner and probably the best deal out there on the used market.
Hi! I bought the Sony NEX VG30H. I personally think that this is a great option. You get what you pay for and it has a pretty good sensor size for this price. I've used this a lot and this camera has a lot of nice features! I recommend it!

Terrific product video! thanks for posting; It helped introduce me further to this model. I'm snooping around for a new 'corder ... seems for years now, every unit I buy more or less "expires" after 5 or so years ... might be the demanding conditions I haul them out into regularly (mountaineering; backpacking; etc.).

They are very different cameras. The VG30 is a cine style camera, single large sensor and cine style lens options. The XF100 is a fixed servo zoom lens camera that shoots in 50mbps 4:2:2. So comparing the cameras will depend more on what you will be using the camera for and which features are more important.

Will the Sony XLR adapter and microphone that came on the Sony HVR-A1U work with this NEX-VG30? The configuration looks the same but I can't tell from this video if the connectors are the same.

How would you compare this camera to the Sony EA50UH? I'm trying to decide between the two. It seems like the functionality (XLR, buttons, etc) of the EA50UH is worth another few hundred. Besides the price, are there any other pros to buying the VG30 over an EA50U?
I noticed that in using the VG-30 the rocker zoom does not extend to the full edges of the manual zoom control. It seems that it only covers about 50% of the Zoom in and out. Am I doing something wrong or is there a setting I need to change? I wanted to use this on a remote camera setup where I would not be able to access the zoom switch on the side of the lens. Any ideas? Oops - Never mind - You answered this question in the video. I had it set to Digital Zoom.
Will an XLR mic pick up sound from the lens when the adapter is attached?

seriously considering getting the vg30 in a few months as it's just at the perfect price range right now but I do have some questions that I've yet to find answers too, just little things like. How flexible is the led screen? Does it flip all the way round so a person on camera can see what the shot is?
can you compare it to panasonic ag-ac 90?
What about a compatible rig, for a matte box, etc? Any recommendations? And what about a tripods?

I think because the camera is so new, I haven't been able to track down information about this camera's live web streaming capabilities, so I hope you may have some insight.
Basically, can the NEX-VG30H live stream video on the web? Can I buy some apparatus that may make it possible to live stream on the web with this camera? If so, what kind of converter box? Or, am I better off purchasing the Sony HDR-FX1000?

Just bought the VG30... IT DOES NOT SUPPORT VIDEO DATA info (battery info and Record on etc, ) to an external monitor via HDMI. I'm on the phone right now with Sony trying to downgrade our VG30 to a VG20. (Sony confirms this fail)
We use jibs and glide rigs... so not knowing if you're recording or the battery is about to die is very important.
Seems like a firmware update could fix this?

It's always better to use external mics. The built in mics on cameras are not very high quality.

PLEASE HELP ME! I want to invest in a good camera for making short movies, documentaries etc.. but im not sure what to get, i was looking at dslrs such as the 7d or any other ones, but i could also get a pro camcorder such as the sony nex vg30 which i saw in Best buy. Can somebody help me decide what to get for a filmmaker? I really cant choose, some saw dslrs have a more movie like video because of the sensor but idk. Please help!
Footage at 0:38 looked really bad. Not sure about this anymore. 2k+ is a lot of money for something that records like that.
It's no longer in production. You can find a used, body-only for under $500 on eBay. With the motorized lens they go for about $1,000. Avoid VG20 and VG10.

It's a decent camera, but compared to the NS700 it is A LOT darker. I have to increase the gain to twice as high in order to let in the same amount of light. Which kind of defeats it's low light performance selling point...
Which lens are you using?
The kit lens, haven't invested into video lenses yet. I shoot all Nikon for stills and am considering getting an adapter and some extra gear to get the cine-style focusing on those lenses.
Does this lenses allow manual focus and zoom?

Unfortunately this camera does not offer selectable color
profiles like S-Log, nor will this camcorder offer the kind creative style
modes, like portrait or neutral color, that would be found on Sony’s mirrorless still cameras. Making adjustment
to the Gain, ISO, and White Balance would be the best way to manipulate the exposure
to obtain as much information as possible. *Andrea

The camera does not have anything built in for web streaming. What you would need to do is use the HDMI output into a capture box on a computer for streaming. The FX1000 you would use the cameras firewire output to a firewire port on the computer for streaming.

The NEXVG30 offers a 3.5mm (1/8") stereo mini external mic input port. The Sony HVR-A1U has a similar input as well. But the XLR adapter will not connect to the NEXVG30. It was built expressly for the HVR A1U.

Look, I'm not asking for much here. I just think after the 3rd(?) version of this camera, they would fix that. Honestly, that problem is a HUGE reason why I want to avoid this camera and it's predecessors.

The EA50 is obviously the better of the two cameras with the added XLR, shoulder mount design and other pro features. It is worth the money over the VG30. The only possible pro for the VG30 over the EA50 I would think (depending on usage) is that it is in a smaller form factor, other than that I would recommend the EA50.
