The coolest thing about this video is that your setup for blogging and its output quality on screen looks like the technology you have is of today. But when we look at the date of the video, it is 10 years ago. Man that’s the cool. Thx for this review.
Coming to ya from 2017, and I still want one of these
vs RED EPIC DRAGON xD
YEAH SAME
Hayden Budd they are less than an old beat up vx1000..
what a horrible camera though lol.. once it filmed it all went out the window
Vs Red Weapon🔥🔥🔥
It’s 2019 and this camera still surpasses many of the canon factory kit cameras.
The shape of this cam, reminds me of the old Starship Enterprise.
Mam I can't believe this was taken in 2012, the resolution is top notch!
This ultimate frisbee footage was so much fun to watch!
So crazy to think this video is from 2012... That's when I got my VG20 and, well, I've used it ever since. Still using it for TH-cam + corporate stuff alongside an A6300 :D In terms of being versatile, I think the camera really stands out when you're shooting events and need to travel light, swap between recording keynotes and presentations into doing interviews and vox pops.
Should've went for a super-35 sensor, xavcs and at least one Xlr in put
The camera you use for your videos is the best on you tube. Your videos are awesome man
To say that's on autofocus (in the frisbee football footage), it's pretty responsive - impressive. I wasn't as impressed with the indoor filming, but it all in all it looks like a nice alternative to DSLR models.
Oh shit! Hi MKB!!!! So I've borrowed this camera for an event I'm shooting so I'm looking at reviews and example set ups and I come across your channel!! Mad
The Canon T2i's video used to shoot the beginning of the review looked a lot better! :)
Hello Marques, I'm watching this in 2023 and I still need this camera
For it's price just too many average things going on
MKBHD from the past
I know! I'm here because I've borrowed this camera for an event and needed some insight... Can't believe MKB was top of the search... Nearly
I agree with your point of view. However a lot of people want to make small professional videos to practice and that's why there are so many people buying the DSLR cameras. There are a lot of people that just do it for a hobby.
I see a lot of people on Philip Boom forums asking what camera should I get and everyone says on the forum do not get the Sony NEX-VG20. There is one guy on Philips forums that uses the Sony NEX-VG20 but he does not like to color grade his footage.
Why do you have a ceral box next to your set
what troubles me is the multiple mentioning of that the sensor is a dslr sensor. The biggest video flaw of a dslr camera is that the sesor warms up and therefor a dslr can only record continous for 17 to 25 minutes. after that the sensor has to cooldown. So either it is not a dslr sensor or I am wrong in some other way? And as a reaction to some other comment: I use a dslr for video a lot. I have not yet seen one dslr with a good continious autofocus. in the end I always switch to manual to avoid many blurry shots. But then again if working with larger iris openings (low F stops) even a videocamera continious-autofocus system seems not to work good enough mosttimes. In the end when being video critical everything gets switched to manual. With auto-iris and auto-shutterspeed first, then auto-focus and finally auto-whitebalans. So maybe not focus too much on the auto functions :)
Insan3lik3 and MKBHD in one video? How can I not give a thumbs up?
at first the indoor quality didnt look so great so i didnt expect much, but when you took it outside, WOW, just WOW!
Very well made video
Marques you are a BOSS!! Nice editing man!! Love the song choice as well!!
What are the odds that I look up this camera on TH-cam considering buying it as a backup and the first result is this 7 years later lol.
Marquees you're a beast with that frizbee.
Yes, I know that. But Canon cameras do have autofocus among many other standard features. Some films has been shot completely with Canon 5D, so it must be good.
The footage shown here is not showcasing all the dynamics of this camera. However it's still a good review. This camera is still better than a lot of the newer dslr's. That is why the price on this camera still has its value.
For many of the other dslr camera's on the market you would have to purchase additional lens and mic to equate to this cam. This cam can shoot hours non stop whereas many of the others shut off after 20 to 30 minutes. Put a flash on it for pics and you won't be disappointed. I use Canon and Sony so I'm familiar with both. I still choose this camera over many others.
it's not quite 5d mkiii level since the 5d a full frame sensor. the vg-20 has a aps-c size sensor. while this is still quite large for a video camera, it's certainly not full frame territory.
auto exposure was horrible
Coming to see ya in 2020.still want it now
This is about to blow up again
Hey Marques, AMAZING review! loved every bit. That's indeed a sweet camcorder, for a second there I though I was watching the news, hehe. Best of both worlds.
The pass @ 5:41 is incredible. Best part of the video!
Vimeo fan here.any camera can have shallow depth of field if you zoom in and if you use macro mode. To get shallow depth of field with a zoom lens you need to zoom in about 10 to 20 feet not very ideal all the time. That's why people use DSLR cameras for shallow depth of field now. You can get shallow depth of field with the Sony NEX-VG20 but you will need a faster lens if you want to get closer to a subject. Also full frame helps cameras help like the Canon or Nikon cameras 5D Mk3 or D800
I don't know why Marques but you make me happy :) As I see you I smile, maybe because I know you're gonna talk about something you've a passion for :)
P.s. Sorry for my bad english
Nice camera, but a few problems with it:
1. Proprietary lenses.
2. No XLR inputs.
3. Only one card slot, no slot for a backup.
How do you throw it so easily! 5:36 was a awesome throw! Got to learn this sport! Nice review!
First time i'm watching one of your videos good job man pro level editing and very well executed review. Also love the camera the auto focus that i see here is really good!!
I notice a big difference between the camera you were reviewing and the one you use to record this review . the one you use for the video looks so much better. what did you use to make this video? really informative and you got to the point love the video bro.
you have an easy future in broadcast journalism... great voice, super diction and annunciation. Keep at it and, oh yeah, and the camera seems really cool! pm-r :)
I think it is really more a starters camcorder. It is my second videocamera ever, and I am really happy with it. I am not used to XLR inputs or more than one card slot. I am hearing professionals saying that the menu system is ridiculous, but I think it is easy. But the image quality is superb. For everyone.
Thanks for the review! I have been watching this line of cameras
Like he said, being indoors doesn't do justice to this amazing camera!
there are just something about your videos. i love them. you shuld do way way way more videos
Thanks for the review. sweet video man!
Vimeo fan here. This camera is missing one very import key feature for filmmakers it does not have custom color profiles. When you shoot footage if your serious about filmmaking you shoot a flat custom profile. This lets you grade the footage the best in post.
Also this camera is bad because it has line moire and aliasing problems from line skipping on the CMOS sensor.
what a crazy sport!Nice video Marquees
being a sony video camera man, out of all their mics the built ins are pretty decent, this camera is pretty cool but from the looks of it, it doesnt use mini DV and thats all i like to use
Excellent work Marques
Another very nice review. That camera looks very nice, I would consider getting it if I did a lot of video work.
Hey, I have a VG20! I like it. I don't get a lot of time to get out and do what I'd like with it. Like anything; it has it's quirks, problems and learning curves. I just happened upon 3 old Canon FD lenses from a guy at work so I'm going to buy the adapter from B&H just to experiment and maybe love. Keep up the good work.
The Song Is Bad Pitched By Insan3lik3
The guy in my local camerastore said a 16 Gig SD card would be enough for a couple of hours. It holds for around 1,5 hour. It is absoulutely worth the space.
Alright that last throw you made with the subtle fist punch thingy celebration was freaking awesome. It seems like you used to play soccer from your stance. Oh and what's the name of your team? Anyways, awesome footage.
That song.... I love you bro.
lens can only help so much with low light performance, better lens gives you better sharpness, no soft corners and colour fringing. ISO sensitivity is about the sensor and since this is a 16mp crop sensor so it'll obviously not on par with the DSLR at that price range. even though my d5100 only records in 24fps but d5100 ISO sensitivity is up to 1200 with no grain so it'll be better and cheaper.
This camera isn't targeted to the average consumers, It's more of a high-end camera. And with this price, you have the lens. Anyone who knows about photography knows that a good lens can be very expensive.
your vids are still entertaining / educational even though i don't know a thing about dslr , camera or camcorder
The primary reason why the indoor shots don't look particularly nice would be the lens that he has on it. The F-3.5 simply doesn't allow enough light to reach the sensor, and as such it makes everything shadowy and grainy. Switch it over to one that has a 25-60 zoom and you'll likely get a much lower F-stop, like 2.1 or so. That limits the amount that the camera can zoom, but gives you much better indoor shots.
Good demonstration. I disagree on one point. I have the HF R400 and I think this group of Sony camcorders make perfect sense. I was pretty inoilved in researching DSLR because of the lens capabilities and was just about to order until I found the Sony VG series of camcorders.
My only decisions now are which VG model and what lens group.
Thanks for the video.
slow-mo worked really well at 5:38... well done man :) good review... and we're into exactly the same stuff LOL sik guy :D
Hahaha, dat "YOUR FACE!!" out of nowhere xD
Lol again I ABSOLUTELY LOVE YOUR VIDEOS MAN, so professionally done, you are a great video editor man, I really really wanna learn how to do this, how you talk about the microphone and from left to right focus on it, lol your my fried Marqus is a certified BOSS
If I did more video I would totally buy this.
The T2i have a better lens and is expose right. The VG20 is in auto I think and trying to expose to the light in the background but underexpose the rest.
the mic set up on almost all the sony cams are nice(better then almost end consumer cameras IMO) im using the sony nex 7 and the stock stereo mics are superb. good review as always.
you my friend have gained a sub from me!!!! watched about 20 of your videos and you are AWESOME!
I love mine. I have the BMPC 4K but my VG 20 is the one that can do almost anything.
Hey Trever, I've been checking out this Camcorder for doing some short films and for other events. I checked the price on Amazon, and converted to my currency, it will be around TTD$18,000.00. Yup it's Expensive, but I'm gonna get it. Yaay 👋 😃 👍
5:35 that was just a BEAUTIFUL throw
Thanks a lot for this great review. As always, it's much appreciated!
Oh thing... For what it's worth, at least the original pronunciation of "bokeh" is more like "bo"+"K"(the letter)...although I've heard people say it like you, too.
One more thing... Thanks for sharing the song that you used on your video. It's pretty cool!
On a regular point-and-shoot camera, the manufacturer tells you the optical zoom the camera has, but how do you determine the zoom range of DSLR lens?
think this. this camcorder is $1200 while the canon t2i (the one he was using to record the whole vid) is $599. and it had better quality... I'd rather go with the canon t2i.
Great video mate. I just bought this camcorder and it's awesome. As a surprise, my father adds to its package a sony 24-70mm carl zeiss lens and it's a monster with sony Alpha Lenses. Keep it up!
you forgot to speak about the steadyshot :)
the camera is actually about the same quality of a sony NEX or ALPHA but with continious recording vs 10-30 minutes on a DSLR...
Cool I've been wanting to Vlog but didn't know which one to go for. And I've been very impressed with you'r video camera You use to shoot your videos with
This camera is fantastic for price, only thing i teally dont like , is the placement of the wheel and focus button. its very awkward to get to , without looking for it . other than that, i shot my first wedding on it , and i love it compaired to my Panasonic at $5000
The Canon T2i was using a different lens with a wider aperture so the scene looked brighter!
5:35 Nice throw (and a nice catch by your teammate)! So is the VG20 what you've been shooting reviews on since? Oh, and ultimate ftw. I co-founded a club at my school this year. :D
Looks pretty awesome! And do you play Ultimate? Or just some footage of people you know.
Finally I saw you play ultimate Frisbee
Very nice video. Thanks. I love this concept too, going to buyNEX- VG10 for start, incl. still camera NEX-F3 to share all lenses...aloha.
Hey Marques,
what mac program would you use for amateur video editing and cutting???
Also, what camera do you use in your videos?
Thanks a lot for these awesome reviews, they really help...
He uses a t2i and a Premiere
in the 22nd episode of house this season, the memoir episode that hugh laurie does, this is the camera he uses, u can see it
Hi Marques. Great vid! I was pretty surprised when you switched over the Sony. The lighting seemed much dimmer and the sound quality wasn't that great. Just wondering... when you shot with the Sony, what the lighting lower in the room, and did you use the Sony microphone on top of the camcorder, or a Rode? Thanks, man.
Just wanted to remind you that you have a soothing voice
My god, that's a sick looking camera!
Nice review. The lens that comes with the camera is a little slow for my liking. Looking forward to a future Blackmagic Design Cinema Camera review :).
Great stuff. Excellent review, footage and channel.
So basically, this video shows that your t2i kicks the hell out of the vg-20?!
I have the feeling your settings on the vg-20 were off. There just can't be such a big difference in quality between the two!
Hi Marcuss, I was wondering what slider you had the sony attached too? Is it any good? How long it is and are you only using on one tripod? Thanks a lot, you continue to shoot awesome good video. Well balanced and very informative
Thanks for a real world presentation. But, your primary video equipment is a Cannon DSLR? You didn't explain how much difference between the two. Does it mean the 20 won't be useful indoors? One more question if you please. What was the frame rate @ Frizz'B game? Thanks, SBB
I know most tech review videos aged like milk due to how fast consumer technology move but this is one of the exceptions due to how popular the camcorder still is especially on the used market for those skaters out there
ayye i love UF, good luck with ur season man!
I love this camera so much!
Really great review, I wish you went over what type of manual settings it has though
he has a 5D it makes a little lit room look great
Great video, it would be interesting to see some of the scene modes on this camera. The footage seems a little over exposed outdoors, and under exposed indoors. The overall quality was great. Thanks for your videos .. they are all great!
Hello from future 🎉
i haven't seen this dual camera beast thing before this review. great review. have u used the HX30v though? im planning to getting a cam/video cam combo and hx30v is around my price range...
this camera is a hard one to hunt down if your buying used on amazon or ebay.
Great video dude, really enjoyed watching it. Gave a really good review.
