I love the VG concept and this appears to be the most polished generation to date. The XLR adapter is pricey but the camera is not when compared to competing products. Thanks for watching!
If you are comfortable with the form factor, the VG line can't be beat. You really will have the best of both worlds. The NEX-6 is a great option but if you don't want the limitations of the NEX-6 regarding video (29 min clips, shorter battery life) then the VG wins in every way. The VG30 is much more expensive so you are paying for the functionality but if you want everything in one device, the VG is the way to go.
I have the NEX-F3 camera -- I love it, but the 30 min. video clip limit is a pain for the kind of work I need to do, so I now I'm really interested in the VG30 (plus I love that the e-mount lenses are interchangeable) . My main question is: can the VG30 be used for live web streaming? My Mac didn't recognize the F3 - probably need a converter - but because the VG30 is technically a camcorder, I wonder if it's possible. If so, will it stream inherently, or through a converter, too? Thank you.
So, how long has the battery life really lasted when you used the camera for shoots that were 5 hours or more? What type of external mic do you use? A nice inexpensive one cheaper than the the sony XLR kit would be nice. Does the camera get too heavy when you attach a mic and video light at the same time?
I am mainly looking for a camera that can also take the occasional video. Would this be good as a main camera despite the camcorder form factor? Would I be better off getting an NEX-6 and add the lens from this kit?
Holy crap $800 for an XLR adapter. That is outrageous. A zoom H4n is almost 3 times cheaper than that. This is a very interesting camera though I will be keeping an eye on this! I like that nice big sensor and lens swoppidge.
If you are looking for picture profiles,XLR, audio control dials, wall charger, same lens..... but willing to carry a larger camera the Sony EA50 has been reduced in price.

Frequently, I can't adjust iris, shutter speed, etc when in standby mode and I get an error message that reads 'iris - cannot operate' or 'focus - cannot operate'. It goes away when I start recording (I've only been in video mode). Is your camera doing the same thing?

look, I always have wanted to get a vg30 because of it's crisp hd footage and epic design, but unfortunately the price was a bit too high so i finally got a canon 60d dslr for 800 dollars with a decent lens. I'm just a beginner, and to start off with it's a great camera! I am buying lots of extra equipment like rode videomic, nd filters, to get even better results, the only thing is, trying to hold your dslr steady and manually focusing. h tt ps : / / vimeo . com / 71958060
Watching this in 2019 and the VG30 still occupies a special niche for affordable full-day live video streaming with shallow DOF.

I agree the camera is priced very well! I wish they wouldn't call it a "Handycam" haha!
good idea man :) Check out other dslr's such as t3i's or t5i they are good too but less expensive
