Thanks for the video, Matthew. A few quick notes to elaborate on some of your points: While recording internally is certainly convenient, when recording internally, you only get a 16-bit recording, while MOST separate audio recorders are going to be 24-bit or 32-bit. Even the lowly Zoom h1 and Tascam DR-10L recorders offer 24-bit audio. Oh, and in case anyone is curious, plugin power (3 to 5 volts) which works for many mics that have a 3.5mm jack but no battery, is sometimes referred to as "bias voltage." Ok, one more tidbit, there are XLR to 3.5mm adapters so on can plug an XLR mic in to the camera's 3.5mm TRS socket, but unless those XLR mics have a battery, the camera won't be able to power it through the 3.5mm socket, since the XLR mic will be expecting around 48 volts (known as phantom power). Amd just to make things MORE complicated, some XLR mics that CAN use a battery sound worse when using the battery compared to using 48volt phantom power from a dedicated recorder.

My guess: A was shotgun mic mounted on magic arm. B was mounted on the cage directly. C was hand held close to the mouth. (I guess I got a and b wrong, but C was easy due to proximity effect.)

Thanks! I have a Zoom H1n but if I plug it into the camera in a shotgun style there is added noise on my G80. So much so that it is unusable. So instead I use a Sennheiser MKE 400 which works really well.

Nice! Yeah honestly a simple plug in shot gun sounds good but the external recorder is just something else

@@MatthewDangyou the problem is...I haven't figurer out how to get "the great sound" out of the H1n....if I set the in volume to like 5 on the scale 1 to 10 I have to have the microphone really really close to get good audio. If I dial it up to 9 then there is two much "noise" maybe it is a lemon just my copy. But it is so much frustration that often for me it isn't worth the hassle If the audio turns out poorly. So, again, shotgun or lav wireless is what works for me. And I am a university professor who records some of my lectures not only at home but parts at various locations to demonstrate what I am talking about or as an engaging backdrop. Or I.make a short film 5-8 minutes that I use in class. So my use case is a bit different.....

@joestrahl6980 yeah! Honestly I would look into two options. Either wireless dji mics with 32 bit float or the normal version if those specs dont matter as much. Then you can just record on the microphones and sync the audio in post to avoid camera presets. The second option is with the shot gun mic and getting the zoom F3 and an audio technica microphone. Not this option isn’t cheap by any means but once I bought mine I haven’t looked back!
