I had a total breakdown this morning and cried because I am breaking out so bad lately. I used to suffer from acne but last year my skin finally cleared up. Ever since the pandemic my skin has been going crazy because of wearing a mask. I feel so insecure now and I don’t know how to prevent more breakouts since we still have to wear a mask everyday

Connect the ear elastic loops with a piece of rope then tie it at the back of your head, that should help with the irritation around the ears. Hope this helps a bit!🙏

    • @raraavis7782

When I still had more 'active' acne, one of my favorite products was an otc creme called 'Aknederm'. It's a high dose zinkoxid creme with very good antibacterial effects. And unlike other anti acne ingredients like benzoyl peroxide oder salicylic acid, it's not irritating at all. A little drying at most, but no burning or itching.
As I understand it, it doesn't attack the acne 'in' the skin, but rather helps control acne causing bacteria on the surface - which might possibly help with the mask problem.
Good luck to all of you - I had to wear a mask all day for only 3 days, before I could hide myself away behind plexy glass, at my job....but that's enough, to deeply sympathize with everyone, for whom that is the 'new normal'.

This has been such a frustrating issue for me and at first I thought I was the only one dealing with it. I’ve always had problems with acne but mostly got it under control until this pandemic hit. The heat and humidity don’t help and with the mask trapping all that grossness in my skin, I’ve been getting breakouts in places I’ve never had before. Plus they’re usually super deep set and painful.
Besides being extra diligent with my skincare routine, I’ve found that painstakingly washing and rotating out my masks has been very helpful. Even if I have to hand wash daily, it’s totally worth not dealing with that extra pimple or two.

I've always had a very acne prone skin (face level). For YEARS, even when I finally got a job, I had that awful complex right on my face, all the time. Then few years ago, I started treating the acne, and just few weeks before corona virus started, my face has turned so clean and soft and it made me so happy, when thinking about how bad it used to be back in middle school.
Then corona came, and the masks. And my acne went back exactly like before. All my effort for nothing

I'm so glad seeing everyone else having a similar experience with their skin. my face started breaking out with pimples, and now I'm left with pigmentation on my checks. Thought it was just hormonal and normal breakouts like I always got before the pandemic. But soon realized the suspiciously straight breakout and pimples areas along my checks where my mask usually is. I legit thought I was crazy. but now I'm a little glad that everyone else is experiencing the same. really miss the way my skin was before the pandemic. :(

I talked with my dermatologist and she recommended silk coverings. She said it was because it doesn't cause localized humidity and acts as a water repellant, so it is effective in protecting against the virus while being able to not irritate skin. What are your thoughts? I always like a second opinion and it sounds like a really good option.

I'm an essential worker too so I can't afford not to wear a mask and a face shield and my skin went downhill since April. My pimples flatten after I dab some pimple cream on them but becomes bigger, redder and more painful at the end of the day. They never heal, they just flatten then get even more inflamed and pop up more pimples. So frustrated 😭😭😭

Something I’ve found helpful is washing my face as soon as I get home and take off my mask! Instead of letting the built up sweat/dirt sit on my face, it’s better to get it off as soon as possible.
I’ve stopped wearing makeup with the exception of mascara and a bit of setting powder to help make my skin smoother. I’ve cut out foundation, concealer, etc. because it made things so much worse.

Thank you so much! Myself and my co-workers have been talking about this and are so frustrated. We weren't sure if it was just stress or if the masks could be causing this so I am so glad to find your video. In the hospital we are having to wear masks and goggles all shift and they are so uncomfortable. Not only am I breaking out my skin is itchy and bumpy. It's so uncomfortable and embarrassing. I have been wearing more make-up then usual to try and cover it up which after listening to this is probably making my skin worse. Unfortunately we don't have a choice of types of masks and due to a shortage of PPE we have to wear the same mask all day. Unfortunately, eating and sleeping well are in short supply right now. I am a Recreational Therapist so I am also starting to get my patients outside now that the weather is nice. So sweat is now also complicating the picture (we have to be in full PPE when working with pts) with the sun and heat of outdoors. On top of that I am also plagued with migraines which I have strong suspicions may also be caused by the extended use of PPE. I am definitely going to use the advice you gave in this video and will pass on to my co-workers. Thank you!

I once had Melanoma in situ on my back and after the scare, removal, 15 stitches on my back, was cleared (SOOOOOOOOO THANKFUL). Now I fear losing half of my top lip if they need to remove so much skin.

I hand wash my masks with really hot water and mild detergent. I don’t mix them with other fabrics, I feel is more hygienic this way. After a couple of hours resting in detergent and hot water they come out so clean and soft and smell so good. I also boil them for 10 minutes once in a while.

In order to both reduce stress and get better sleep giving up caffeine can help a lot. It increases how long the stress hormone, cortisol, stays in your system which suppresses your immune system which (i assume) would increase the occurrence of acne.

Thank you! I find that only applying eye makeup, ditching base makeup has really helped lessen my break outs.
At night after my moisturizer, I’ve been applying a thin layer of CeraVe healing ointment to repair my moisture barrier. Then in the morning I use a gentle cleanser and moisturize again.
The hospital I’m working at has recently gave us 1 kn95 masks each and we have to reuse it for the foreseeable future so we’ll see how this goes 😷

My face is VERY OILY, wearing normal sunscreen can make me reflect light.
    MY SKIN CONDITION
    Before Covid :
    -Oily Skin
    -Visible Big Pores
    -Dull Skin
    -1/2 acne ( sometimes )
-Clear skin ( most of the time )
    Covid Strikes :
    -Oily Skin
    -Acne Scars
-ACNE ( blackhead, whitehead, Cystic, ect..)
-No Visible Big Pores cause ACNE has covered most my cheeks and jawline
My cheeks and jawline have been breaking out like crazy and I have Cried and have Total Brokedown several times due to my skin condition and it's not only about my appearance and confidence but It's also about the PAIN that acne has caused me.
I really hope all of us will have clear skin and this pandemic will end soon 😢 This is terrible.

Exercise is a great distraction for stress and helps with sleep and overall health. Not to mention getting into shape. :) I haven't had acne in any form in over 30 years but recently have gotten some around my nose after wearing a mask. I've eliminated most skin products including makeup under the mask and if there's a pimple present I cover it with a dab of Prosacea, let it dry, then put on the mask. So far this is helping to prevent more breakouts. I've had 3 so far in the past month. Would using CeraVe ointment on the areas under the mask help at all with protection from skin irritation? Thanks Dr. Dray. :)

Thank you, Dr. Dray! I am in an odd camp, I started getting a crazy breakout late December last year, and it won't go away. So the masks have been kind of a silver lining for me because it has only been on my chin and just outside the marionette line area. I've been hoping that the masks could maybe even substitute for sunscreen. I spend a lot of time driving and in my car, so I get a lot of exposure. Is that a reasonable thought? I have a bunch of nice smooth cloth ones, and i wash them frequently. some are smoother than others, but my nose pushes them out forward - they're the kind that are advertised as UV masks and go far down the decoltage.

Hi Dr. Dray! As a dermatologist I was wondering what your perspective is on prouducts such as Alani Nu Balance. I am in my mid 20's and suffer from hormonal acne, and my friends reccomended Balance. I was wondering if there was an actual science behind it or if it is a prouduct that sells because it is popular on social media. Friends who have hormonal acne swear by it, but I am hesitant to use it since I don't know the fundamentals of the prouduct. Would love to hear your thoughts! Thanks!

I have been struggling with acne for years and I’m so over it. I was actually able to clear my skin for some time. I came to realize that sugar was one of the main reasons as to why my face looked so bad. I decreased my intake on it and like magic my skin became clear. I also used a turmeric mask which helped a lot too. It took about one month to see a change but it was worth it. Anyway I got my period not that long ago and it completely ruined my skin. Now I have these red bumps all over my cheeks and under my chin as well. Words can’t describe how upset and angry I am rn. Knowing that I’m going to have to restart the whole process all over again kills me. I also have eczema around my nose so u can imagine the struggle I have to deal with. It’s not severe tho it can become very noticeable sometimes. I just want to have clear healthy looking skin. Plus where I work at they require us to wear a mask. Wearing a mask just makes things worse for both my acne and eczema. I’m tired of having to deal with this shit 😔.
