  • This is the second of a five-part seminar series on "Doctrines of Neoplatonism". Part 2 was recorded in Los Angeles on Wednesday, October 19, 1955.
Manly Hall considered Neoplatonism (~3rd to 7th century C.E.) to be one of the most important philosophical systems that a seeker of wisdom could study. Beginning with Plotinus, this movement brought back the spirit of pre-Socratic thought as well as that of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle. Consciousness was considered as primary and existing before matter - that the thought world proceeded the material realm, and therefore, more important for each of us to explore and experience.

These are amongst my absolute favorites of his lectures. The whole series of lectures is absolutely fascinating. Manly had a deep understanding of what was happening around the 4th and 5th centuries which ended with the travesty of the death of Hypatcia and the closing of the Athenian Academy. These events launched us into a literary dark ages in the western half of the empire. It was not until Charlemange the first that educational initiatives took place which laid the groundwork for the Renessiance. These philosophies come to life again in a very real and profound way, under the surface, in our dreams. Through them we become like Socrates for whom it was said was "like the statue is of Silenus, far from beautiful on the outside, but full of lovely little figures of the gods inside."

1hr 02 mins- how Manly and the audience managed to ignore the person dry hacking triple coughs every 20/30 seconds for about ten mins straight- !!?? Oh hallelujah- as I type my comment it’s ceased? Or the persons unconscious and slumped in his seat 😂 - nope- a single cough just sounded- oh crikey he’s double coughing now- this is such a meaningful and brilliant step of the souls journey- so glad however you still put the content out REGARDLESS of the coughing as the content is too precious and the speaker a special guy. Sorry my autism just really get me twitching an eye like a lunatic when disrupted- 😊😂🧡✌🏻🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🔥
