I appreciate that you leave in the "nasty surprises" that you find when you're working. A huge component of fatiguing in house repair for me is how every little thing turns into huge projects because the handyman that had his hands in before me did something stupid and there's always more that needs replacement than you planned. I appreciate seeing those moments, of "oh no, I hope there isn't rot under here" because that is relatable.
Yep. A bunch of homeowners and/or contractors doing work in a house over the years and not doing things properly because they either want to save a quick buck or they simply didn't know any better can cause some serious problems in the long run for a house. And when people are planning on selling in the near future and don't care one bit if their work will last for years to come because by then it's the next homeowners problem
I have done more tub change over than I can count. It's great seeing old customers 10 to 40 years later still happy with my work. Treat them all like your mom. Be blessed

Most of the time it is not from improper installation. It is improper design. Any door with a wooden jamb and no roof above needs a screen door. the seal fails between jamb and sill lets water in and rots everything under. sliders is the only door i would install with a roof.
Love how you guys jump right in and tackle the rot. Now that's bravery. Looking forward to the rest of the series. Hope mon / grandma makes a speedy recovery.
Glad you guys did this project. You can see the mold on the bottom left corner at the front of the tub in the opening shots of the video, and after all the commentary about the age of the house and the slow reveal of the contractors' methods, this was a well-needed update for your mom. Great job!
no wall, don't block any of the opening! leave the whole area open. makes it SO much easier for access and a shower seat and someone to possibly be there helping her. just pull the shower curtain over!. I've been with a remodeling company for 8yrs. We focus mostly on showers/tubs and surrounds. We add extra/taller flange to our shower bases and tubs. Your mom's tub is evidence of WHY! I love extra precautions! Better safe than sorry! Also, we do solid surfaces because tile can get NASTY, even when done "right'
You have a good point about tile, but one way to fix that is to keep it dry with good airflow, light and people who care enough to dry it off with an old towel. In most cases, that is unlikely to happen.

Kudos to your mom for living alone at 91. Well I'm assuming that she is living alone. I fully expect to hear her using her new shower well into her century years.
Raises his hand. Mom needs an exterminator. As they pull out the first panel of sheetrock out of the house, you can clearly see a cockroach scurry across the panel.
Consider using Ditra system, included a curb-less shower with Ditra foam shower pan and drain (could use the linear option if you have the budget), heated floor throughout the bathroom AND shower. Did this in a recent basement remodel in my house and love it!
Remodels are so much fun! It's just a bunch of surprises at every turn. I've had to tear out and replace floors due to water leakage too. You just never know what you're going to get. Great job!
This project is probably already done, but if it isn't, I'd STRONGLY recommend an opening wider than three feet into the shower. In fact, I'd leave the entire opening there. Three feet is barely wide enough to comfortably get a wheelchair through, and NOT wide enough to then maneuver it into place for a shower, particularly if someone will eventually need to be in there WITH your mom to help her bathe. Trust me. We went through that with my Dad and were SO glad we left the entire front open because we needed to get right in there with him. Also, be sure to put in both a long vertical AND long horizontal grab bar in there for her in case she needs to transfer to a bench, etc.

Another suggestion: consider using a channel drain. A wheelchair in the center will potentially cover the round drain opening, a channel drain close to an edge might serve better. And the bonus comes from when wheelchair comes out, the excess water that comes with the chair can be squeegeed into the channel near the edge.
Curbless showers *rock*. Don't forget the "trench drain"... *super easy* to clean! That tub came out *way* too easy, though... let's see a cast-iron one, where they build the bathroom around the tub! Great videos, guys!
+1 to all of Carole Warner's suggestions about a full width recess, perimeter drain, access for a carer and handrails. I used to work for our CIty Corporation modifying bathrooms for our older residents so they could remain in their own homes. Also, scalding is a real danger... turn the hot water heater down to 50°C. The house is for her...if anyone else needs hotter water, they can boil it.
I did the same for my mom in Indiana and she loved the full-size shower pan for a few years before finally going to assisted living. I ended up putting one in my house and I love it. Hoping I got 20 or so years before I got to move, but still why step over a tub wall and I never take a bath. Good stuff and the fact you help your kids and mom means more than anything else.
DAMN!!!! She's 91?!?!?! That's impressive :O!!! On the bright side, 30 years ago made it easy to remove 1 wall of tile lol Thank your home repair/renovation dad and brother. Keep all the good parts for the next video, I don't want to miss anything
Your video was a great teacher for me. Thank you. While watching your demolition, it reminded me of my deceased cousin. He claimed to be a grand auto mechanic. He was, as far as disassembly was concerned. But he couldn't figure out how to get the parts back on. I can't wait to see how your assembly goes. My wife and I are in our seventies, and this might be my next DIYer project.
God bless you for taking such good care of your mom. Both of my parents have passed away. Miss them everyday. Looking forward to your next video. Sending prayers for your mom’s speedy recovery!
What I really appreciate about your videos is that you address problems that could come up. Why? When you do something yourself, there are always problems! Always...
Nice to have brothers and sisters to help; as an only child I do everything to take care of my mother including updating her bathroom to a shower only before her hip replacement. Walk in showers are a great safety improvement but after her hip, now some years later, she regrets not having a tub to soak in. The tub was an issue before the hip but, to her, not so much after; thinking about now putting a walk in tub.
@@guyod1 - I wasn’t going for ADA, just trying to give him a workable number there. Sixty would be a two foot change that looks like would become a massive undertaking.
Another great installment. Watching you clear out that dry rot is therapeutic just like popping bubble wrap. :) Looking forward to the next one. I used to work for a small general contractor, and the way you think is exactly how we used to operate. I'd have you work on my house in a heartbeat.
Depending on how much you need to drop those floor joists in the shower. You could sister 2x4s at the depth you need and install the plywood between the joists. Keep up the great work!
A big time bummer for all the work facing you in the next several days. But great for us. More SP vids. Yay! Very sorry about your mom. I will be praying for her and, of course, the very likable Stud Pack. Rock On! 🙏🏻👍🏻
I’m one of 7 kids and I know how hard it can be keep the lines of communication open between such a big lot to help your parents out as they become less independent. I’m glad your moms ok and recovering. I lost my grandma to a slip and fall accident and as a kid I didn’t understand what serious business it could be to fall down as an older person. Anyway your mom is so lucky to have an amazingly talented son like you to help her out. Prayers for her recovery.
Should you add some mold inhibiting paint to the structural members that were adjacent to the rot? My thinking is just to prevent the further spread of mold spores while you work. I might be thinking overkill here too so I’m seriously asking
Knowing the horrific mortality rates for the elderly that break hips, I'm glad to hear your mom is doing great and will soon be coming home to a purdy new shower. The scariest part of any remodel is finding out what hidden surprises may lie behind the outer cosmetics.
Not bad water damage. Good to catch it now. Years ago I fixed my parents bathroom which had been built as an addition off the dining room. It was totally rotten and had a poor foundation. I ended up demolishing the whole thing including the foundation and literaly rebuilt it from the ground up. A labor of love. They were more than pleased.
Just came from watching another video where a guy needlessly destroyed a door and compromised the structural safety of his house by cutting a sheer wall and replacing a 5-6 stud support with 1 stud Thank God theres Studpack videos! People who know what theyre doing ❤
I got asked by a slumlord to “Fix two tiles” in a basement suite bathroom. and got yelled at after with two fingers I pulled a 3 foot x 3 foot section of tile and sopping wet drywall into the tub. The problem was that the ancient taps were dripping off the back of the assembly for years and years. Had to reframe the whole partition wall between the tub and the kitchen. And of course, the 220v for the stove was on that wall, down at the floor. I demo’d the whole wall by hand, no tools required, everything was so rotten.
Dang that sounds really bad. I demo'ed a shower once where the subfloor and joists we're complete gone underneath. The renter lady didn't want any issues with the landlord so she kept quiet about the issue. It was kind of scary tearing out the pan cause it was being held up by rotted wood and the cement itself lol. And that on a raised foundation. Oh and the studs to the exterior wall we're completely shot too!
We are remodeling our builder grade home bit by bit! Usually I like to watch multiple videos on something before we attack it, but since finding your channel I feel like you cover so many things so thoroughly that I can attack whatever it is this builder grade granny house throws at us! I am sorry that the build in your mother's bathroom was so poor, but I get the feeling all of your headache is going to help us immensely when we convert our main bathroom tub into a shower stall (we are anticipating water damage as well). So thanks for all the work on this channel!
You guys probably by now do have an idea that you are a frikking big inspiration to us out here... both professionals and DIY alike... thank you for your earnest explanations in all your videos. You guys rock!
Make sure you put in a diverter for a handheld and plenty of blocking for grab bars. I prefer using 2x12's for the blocking. I would also recommend a Delta 17 series faucet so you can preset a temp. setting.
I think that it is great that you and your son have such a close relationship together, it speaks volume of what kind of a person you truly are. THUMBS UP👍👍👍👍 I married a woman with four girls, and we have been married going on 33 years now. My wife and I had managed to get the parents of the tear award from a public school years ago, but I have never had any children of my own, which it would of been nice to of had a son. Married to a woman with five girls, I had to have an appointment to get in my own bathroom in the morning :- )
Love this channel. Been watching and learning for a bit. I'm 7 days into a rebuild of a 60ft wall of my house. I'm with you on the crappy contractors. Definitely why my home needs a full rebuild of ever exterior wall. Have to re frame every window in my house due to water and termites. They just cut bigger holes into the stucco for the new windows and didn't flash anything. Just got framing done for the chimney chase today that was so rotted that the only support it had was the stucco siding 😂. I can share some pics for y'all if you'd like. It's damn hard work but it's an accomplishment doing it on your own and doing it right!
Yikes! I just opened up a small addition that was built with no wall framing, just held up by a couple posts and the stucco siding like you describe 😂 I can’t believe what must have run through some people’s minds about what is acceptable
Shower two options. Roll in and side transfer. Side can be closer to 38x38. So you can expand space to toilet beyond for side transfer there. These are available as pre made units Roll in is typically 60x3# Depending upon framing orientation you could install a continuous drains between the shower and floor. Also are you doing anything for the vanity and toilet? Is door width enough?
I feel for your mom, currently recovering from a 15ft + fall broken arm/ shattered pelvic bone, while in hospital had my bathroom remodeled, had the tub removed and replaced with 5.5ft walk in shower. It was a necessity for my recovery. just being able to take a shower is amazing. So in short prayers will be sent
Wow!!! What timing !! I’m ready to do one of my bathrooms, this video series was right on time. You guys are the best, I learn something from EVERY video, Thanks !!!!
I love the care and precision you guys put into every project. I wish it would be simpler to find contractors as detailed as you. Idea for a future series; Hiring a good contractor who will sweat the small stuff so you don’t have to.
first up, i'm a minute in and you've said your mum is recovering from a broken hip so wishing her a speedy recovery second, it's great to hear that kids look after their parents 👍 and third, i'll be back later when i've watched it all
This is awesome. I'm buying a house up in Oregon that was built in 1999. It has bathtubs in both bathrooms and I want to tear out the one in the master and replace it with a curbless shower, just like you are doing here. My wife is handicapped and can't step over the edge of a tub. I've never seen much value in bathtubs in both bathrooms anyway, you really only need 1 bathtub in a house.
Buying a new house. Being built. I opted for walk-in showers in 2 of the 3 bathrooms. Cause you always need at least 1 tub for children or a sits bath. [ask me how I know that one!]
This was randomly recommended to me by youtube but I was so engrossed in the video. Love your personality and how passionate you are for your craft! Thank you for making this video!
We basically box out a section of the floor framing and install smaller joists to drop the shower “area” about 2”. Then we can install the drain and set the slope with deck mud before waterproofing with Kerdi. The smaller joists in the sunken boxed out area allow you to keep the required clearance in the crawl space below without excavation as well.
Seeing this video after literally spending hours cutting out a rotted subfloor and dealing with plumbing problems makes me glad that I'm not alone in dealing with these kinds of issues. :D
We use the ARC shower bases, in cases like this. Cut out the 3/4” subfloor, install the base, then tole over the top. It is curbless, comes in several sizes and drain locations. Not super cheap. About $1,400 for the base and install kit. But it’s a quick easy install and you don’t have to cut floor joists or install a header underneath
This is what happens when you hire based on cost, there is a difference in the finished product with a more expensive contractor. I do not source anything from Home Depot or Lowes only a quality plumbing supply house and that goes for the other materials too. Home Depot used to sell stainless steel braided lines if you needed one and not they sell braided plastic to look like it’s a metal braid, just one example of profit before product. You can follow that throughout the store. The only place they are forced to match in like kind and quality is if it’s a scheduled piece of piping or fitting. I’m in business for 45 years and that’s because I ask for the price I want to do a job 100% and that’s the job they get. My wife said in the 45 years she’s heard the messages (left on plenty loud) on the answering machine or answered the phone and took messages, she has never heard a not nice or nasty call ever. This is all from being trained by an old school craftsman who said do it right or don’t do it at all. Never price your job to compete with a hack.
I’m 80 and still involved. One thing I’ve learned, The level of education is the most important item on the long list of qualifications. And that takes years of dedication. I reply to you because I totally agree with you. God bless y’all.
Usually you have enough slope by removing 3/4" sub floor, sister 2x4 or 2x6 3/4" below existing joists then fill gap in between joists. Basically you are making new sub floor even with existing joists. Then you can either go for pre-made foam shower floor or make your own mud floor. Water proofing membrane or roll on membrane (such as RedGard) works better because it will also save thickness.
Since I used to be in the business, my friends are all asking. Visited with an old high school friend two years ago & she had found one she was extremely satisfied with. Only problem is, she kept him busy for an entire year, then her sister, & now her parents have enough work for him that he’ll be able to retire off of them.
Considering I just delt with water damage from a leaky gas chimney (which I've removed and planned to use as as an extension to my house) I'm glad to see I did everything in the same orderly fashion like you did. And I'm taking my first steps into renovating my house!
I would cut a piece of wood to cover that hole overnight..but then you have already finished this project by the time I have seen it. So glad you lucked out on the framing. Charles
If this project isn’t already done, I would suggest speaking with the rehab crew where your mom is. They should have someone who can give you recommendations for the “door/shower entry”. As several people have commented below, the opening should be wider than 36” to accommodate a wheelchair. 40” is usually the recommended opening size when a wheelchair is used. If she is on a walker, 36” may be fine.
My husband and I are renovating TWO houses (simultaneously) and what we are finding behind walls - it's a wonder the house(s) didn't rot or burn up (faulty, noncode wiring; shortcuts creating potential rot in floors). One house we will eventually sell, but don't want folks to thing it was a 'quick flip' for a profit, while the other house is our forever home. It's WORTH it to do it right, even if it costs a little more money.
really focus on handholds in lots of places and different heights for standing or sitting. one of the big anxieties for older people is the ability to have something to hold on to when sitting, standing, entering, or leaving any structure. If you watch old people walk you will see their eyes travel constantly looking for strong places to braces themselves. since you guys have access to the studs, use that as an opportunity to really fortify lots of good, strong handholds.
Yep. Pretty sure he’s always added plenty of 2x6 backing in any locations needed just for that, as well as for future needs. You only want to open it up once. ;)
Sadly my mom passed in 2019 at the age of 98 she had to be in a nursing home... but while she lived in the house I had paid for a reno for the tub/shower so at least she had a way to take a shower. Consider a shower transfer chair scenario... it is a long bench so the person sits down and then can slide into and out of the shower. Much easier and safer. Recommend you check with a PT (Physical Therapist) so you can accommodate your mom in various phases and ability. Grab bars and anti-slip are very critical too. (BTW: No bath rugs on the floor, they are slip and trip hazards) Your mom is so lucky that she has you to do this renovation in the house... God Bless you all for such a wonderful thing you're doing.
12/14” Electric cutoff saw with vacuum hardly any dust. You can rent them. Make all your slit cuts and then use sledge to chip most of it. Much cleaner. Also the tub drain tool, use the handle of your channelocks as an extension handle through the hole on the tub drain tool, much easier
Just wanted to say I love your channel! Can’t wait for the next video. I’m fairly new to your channel and the attention to detail, humor, pragmatism, and film quality (useful camera angles/editing, with the perfect amount of content to understand what you’re doing and why) are greatly appreciated. I recently started my own handywoman/renovation business, and there’s always more to learn - I’m learning so much from you two. Thank you!! :)
Since in most of my country we use brick and mortar to build I find fascinating how you use different types of wood and how different materials combine to create walls and floors. Good work with these videos, man!
Nice of you to do this, curbless shower is great. BUT if you wanted to 'go all in' then you should look at an Assisto or Elevate tubs. They are like a regular tub, but tub is at seat height, one side slides down to allow access, it lifts up to seal. Fills while you are in it, then drains into a lower tub, so tub goes from full to empty in 10 seconds and you lower the door and slide out in a seated position. No stepping over any curb, no waiting for a 'walk in tub' to drain. Perhaps expensive, but we have found in worthwhile....
I was able to breath a little easier as I watched and realized you did not have to remove a heavy cast iron tub. I'm sure you will be adding backing for grab bars. Many years ago, I started doing that on every tub and shower even if not needed at the time. People get older!
Could you use that extra space next to the new shower as a towel closet or storage instead of closing it up? It’s awesome y’all are doing this for your mom!!

You might want to consider a linear shower drain against the side exterior wall instead of the typical round drain in the center.
Do you have a link for that drain?
I agree!!!

My thoughts exactly
a linear drain in the entry to the shower catches water that would otherwise run out onto the floor.

I'm a big fan of "clean as you go"....thanks guys!
You are a good son and grandson, and your family is blessed to have you there fixing things up for your Mom. Best to your Mother.
Thx John 👊👍
Please do larger than a 3' opening, if she's got a caregiver assisting, 3' is going to be hard to maneuver for both.
This is gonna be a good series! 🙏🏻 for a speedy recovery for your mother!
Thx 👊👍
on behalf of all us elderly or disabled folk, thanks for the loving care you are offering ....
DAMN!!!! She's 91?!?!?! That's impressive :O!!!
On the bright side, 30 years ago made it easy to remove 1 wall of tile lol
Thank your home repair/renovation dad and brother.
Always...
Thx Tom 👊👍
Nice to have brothers and sisters to help; as an only child I do everything to take care of my mother including updating her bathroom to a shower only before her hip replacement. Walk in showers are a great safety improvement but after her hip, now some years later, she regrets not having a tub to soak in. The tub was an issue before the hip but, to her, not so much after; thinking about now putting a walk in tub.
Suggestion: make the shower 48 inches and the opening 48 inches also - this allows for better maneuvering of a wheelchair in that shower.
Its 60" but i thought the same thing. A wall makes everything more difficult to build and use. the only reason for a wall is a bench
@@guyod1 - I wasn’t going for ADA, just trying to give him a workable number there. Sixty would be a two foot change that looks like would become a massive undertaking.
@@stevebabiak6997 the opening is already 60"
@@guyod1 , yes, I was referring to the depth from the wall.
Another great installment. Watching you clear out that dry rot is therapeutic just like popping bubble wrap. :) Looking forward to the next one.
I used to work for a small general contractor, and the way you think is exactly how we used to operate. I'd have you work on my house in a heartbeat.
You’re a good son 😊
I heard he gave her a really good price! 😅
Nice little project will put a smile on Moms face, you guys rock. My mom is 90 with two fake hips and Im always worried about her slipping on the ice.
Sorry about your mom, but you're a good son in trying to make her life better. Keep up the great work!
Thx Frank👊
Depending on how much you need to drop those floor joists in the shower. You could sister 2x4s at the depth you need and install the plywood between the joists. Keep up the great work!
That’s our plan 👊👍
alternately, with the support as close as it sounds like it is, cut those joists out, and put in lower joists.
@studack this!!!
A big time bummer for all the work facing you in the next several days. But great for us. More SP vids. Yay! Very sorry about your mom. I will be praying for her and, of course, the very likable Stud Pack. Rock On! 🙏🏻👍🏻
To work next to this guy with this much knowledge and the "want" to teach would be priceless

Just came from watching another video where a guy needlessly destroyed a door and compromised the structural safety of his house by cutting a sheer wall and replacing a 5-6 stud support with 1 stud
Thank God theres Studpack videos!
I hope slum lords get what they deserve in the after life.
THUMBS UP👍👍👍👍
I married a woman with four girls, and we have been married going on 33 years now.
These are available as pre made units
Roll in is typically 60x3#
Depending upon framing orientation you could install a continuous drains between the shower and floor.
Also are you doing anything for the vanity and toilet? Is door width enough?
Love the “rough in” for the old tub drain, looks like mine. Fortunately no mice, cold, or hot air dared pass through.
Such a great, hard working, ethical family! Y’all are what is right and good in the construction world.
Awesome thx Eric 👍 wishing you a speedy recovery as well 👊
Im excited to see the plumbing! Thank goodness so much of the framing was still in good shape.
I’m remodeling our bathroom right now. If it’s any comfort, you’re not the only one dealing with rotten lumber!
Just subscribed!
If this is a father and son they have a hell of a relationship you should thank god every day you have that in your life
first up, i'm a minute in and you've said your mum is recovering from a broken hip
so wishing her a speedy recovery
second, it's great to hear that kids look after their parents 👍
and third, i'll be back later when i've watched it all
This is awesome.
@@harryl7946 Exactly!!!
This was randomly recommended to me by youtube but I was so engrossed in the video. Love your personality and how passionate you are for your craft! Thank you for making this video!
12 days! That’s amazing. I’m struggling to find materials. Im going to stay tuned. Speedy recovery for your mom- she sounds spunky!
Welcome to the club 👊👍
Sorry to hear about your mom, mine fell about a month ago and broke her hip and elbow. She’s almost 90. 🖖
Deja Vu! I rebuilt my son's first home's bathroom with the exact same rot damage. You were telling my story. Excellent work. Do it right, do it once.
Oh no, sorry about your mom, I hope she has a speedy recovery and she will definitely enjoy her new shower.
Thx Clint 👍💪
Studpack Sunday!! Thank you guys!! Keep up the good work!!
Wish I could find contractors like you.
Ask your friends who they've used. Word of mouth is the best advertisement.
There are lots of us out here. I agree, ask friends or family etc. I don’t advertise at all, strictly word of mouth.
I believe the best craftsmen don't advertise. They don't need to and most probably don't want to.
Charles
We covered it 👊👍
If this project isn’t already done, I would suggest speaking with the rehab crew where your mom is.
(BTW: No bath rugs on the floor, they are slip and trip hazards)
Your mom is so lucky that she has you to do this renovation in the house...
Thank you!! :)
Don't forget adding the required structural supports for the Grab Bars. Your Mother will love her new shower. She raised her children right.
Thx Brent 👊
Excellent project guys! Love watching these vids to see stuff done RIGHT and with integrity! 👍❤️👍 Can’t wait you see this project completion.
33k views in 1 day! Well earned on the channel growth!!! Thanks for the great content! Very Educational. We couldn't ask for more
You guys don't stop when the going gets tough. Great work, again. Staying tuned!!!
