  • Shropshire Fly Boat Saturn starts her run with Buddy the horse from Chester to Ellesmere Port for the Easter Historic Boat Rally 2009. This boat was built for towing by horse, and so isn't a butty (one designed for towing by a motor boat). Note the change-over bridge goes back on itself so that the tow rope doesn't need to be unhitched. It was too dangerous with all the people to have the horse tow at this point unfortunately.

    How the boat managed to not crahsed into the side the horse is on

    • @mykaskin
      @mykaskin  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's a good question - if you notice the towing point (mast) is set back from the front of the boat, pulling from this point actually pulls the boat out from the bank and the steerer needs to slightly steer towards the towpath normally.

    have only just found this, Aussum!!!! we need more!!!!. that horse looks like he IS out for a walk. And the best bit every time he stops lots of fresh grass to munch on.. My only comment is that they could have washed his socks prier to the show.

    Hi Mike Lovely Vlog.In the early 1950s I used to go with my Father on his dumb barge TRENT of Thomas Clayton carrying Gas oil From Purfleet in essex behind the steam tugs up the Thames to Brentford, Then behind the Horse upto Southhall Gas works , Working up the Hanwell Flight past 3 bridges and st Bernardes to Top Lock cafe, All stop for Breakfast and tea and feed the Horse The Horses were all Ex army and if I remember were Clydsdales not Shires as many people think. On sundays the horse drivers used to take it in turns to let the horses out of the Stables at 6 am Before they would kick the Stable door into pieces at Durham wharf just below Brentford Gauging lock and take them onto The Ham and let them run Wild for a few Hours while the driver was in the Pub.Cheers

      Thanks for sharing that information - I do a lot of boating around London so know there area well. Shires are too big for the canal, they were usually all fairly small short horses as once you had the weight moving it wasn’t too difficult to keep it going.

      @@ramseybarber8312 , exactly. The horse is not refusing at all. And there are feeding and water stops. The horse is not actually struggling with a heavy burden; it's a tug, mostly. Once the barge is moving, its own momentum contributes quite a bit to its forward motion. This is a very ancient practice, essential when going upriver, as opposed to sailing down with the current. But just observe the horse: does it look drained, or upset, or weary? No.

    That engine sounds funny, is it hit-and-miss hot bulb, or a two-stroke? Also, how many bhp does it produce?, that boat goes pretty darn quick for an antique..

    wrong side of the beast. You stand canals side so if the horse pulls right that you don't get trapped against the wall by the ropes. If you stay canal side, you might get wet, but can never get crushed. They are doing it all wrong.

    • @mykaskin
      @mykaskin  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Interesting, as it seems even in carrying days this wasn't always followed looking at photographs. I think like a lot of things it depends and situation and location. If you notice once away from the crowds they drive the 'os (or animal, never heard a boatman call them beasts) is driven not led and all driving is done the correct side of the towing rope as you don't want to get pulled in by it.

    And I see in yesterdays newspapers one family who has been running a horse drawn narrow boat for 35 years has been forced out of business by busybodies who accuse them of animal cruelty. That the work is too hard for the horse, which is complete rubbish.

    That was a. Very slow way to travel. But better than a stage coach.

    • @mykaskin
      @mykaskin  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Saturn used to be a fly-boat and would normally pulled at much higher speeds providing a service for perishable goods. There were also passenger services using covered boats travelling at over 8mph day and night with priority at locks, and was much quicker and a better ride than a stage coach!
