    The best definition of NFTs that I ever heard was: "artificial scarcity to make idiots feel special"

  • @tomd1209
    @tomd1209 2 ปีที่แล้ว +144

    Folding ideas called the NFT trade "a catfight between the 5% and the 1%". That's the whole game. None of this stuff has any value, mega wealthy people just created artificial demand by drumming up hype and by throwing money around. How the pictures look is irrelevant, which is why the majority of the artwork that isn't stolen looks like absolute garbage. Aside from these NFTs of course, which clearly have a lot of value. If that definitely not nightmare inducing picture of a pink circle with Belle Delphine's face and a propellor beanie isn't worth at least 10 eth, then I guess I have no understanding of value whatsoever.

    • @misterymisterio8778

      If you think it has no value then you dont understand nfts. It has a cryptocurrency value. Why would anyone buy one? Well its not that simple since everyone has their own reason, but the short answer is money and status.

    • @tomd1209
      @tomd1209 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      It's true that people get conned for lots of different reasons. Money and status are potentially some of those reasons, sure. People buy into scams all the time. Just because somebody paid lots of money for something doesn't mean that it has any value. Look no further than multilevel marketing schemes, where people regularly pour thousands into items that end up sitting in their garages. That's most NFTs.

      Yeah, though it has only been sold twice. First to Hasbro in the late 1990's, and then to the French company Infogrames in the late 2000's that adopted the name. They went to bankruptcy only a few years later and sold off the majority of their assets, subsidiaries and IPs. That followed a corporate restructuring when almost everyone in leadership was fired. There is a problem with the code, in that its runtime will increase dramatcally the closer your desired number of generated images comes to the maximum number of generated pictures possible (after generating halfof the possible image pool, you will have a 50% chance of finding a duplicate, randomly finding the last image of a set of 10000 possible images has a 0.01% chance of occuring per cycle), which I assume was one of the reasons why people kept writing in chat that it would've been easier to just iterate over all possible entries. The other one was probably because everyone had a slightly different idea of what "as lazy/easy/braindead as possible" meant and felt that the one solution had too much thought put into it.

    To clarify the video a bit, Bored Ape Yacht Club might have been a bad example to use for the claim that buying the NFT doesn't give you the copyright.
    While that's certainly true for many other NFTs, Bored Ape Yacht Club does give you license to use your NFT picture for pretty much anything you want, including commercial purposes. You're technically still correct in that it doesn't outright give you the copyright (i.e. The creators can also still use your NFT pic for whatever they want), but you do get...*more* from buying a Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT specifically than you're describing.

    I watched "Line Goes Up" by Folding Ideas and it's amazing. He really explains NFTs very well. Also cryptocurrency in general. The video really blew up (like crypto itself ironically). It's his most popular video, with 3.7 million views and it's also his newest video, only 11 days old. It was released a day after Bitcoin's price crashed. I wonder if this video had any effect on it. Maybe some people figured out it was a game of hot potato and sold their Bitcoins.

    Good shit as usual. Could you make a video where you right click > save as an NFT, mint a new NFT with the saved image and set it as a Twitter pfp to get the stupid hexagon (or any other way that people normally use to prove they own an NFT)? I feel like a lot of people get confused and think that the blockchain somehow ensures the image associated with their NFT is unique, so I think that would help get the point across that you're literally just buying an arbitrary id.

    If it's made by a computer then copyright law doesn't even apply. So even if they wanted to sell you the copyright of it they couldn't because no one owns a copyright to it. At least in the US

    I wanted to sell NFTs for £1.70 each
    Which is a rough price for a tin of pepsi and a packet of crisps.
    I think NFTs might be more appealing if they were dirt cheap for a picture or generated image and weren't sold off for more money than I will ever see in my life.

    There's still a bit of art in those monkeys. The modular parts, how well the hats fit etc. is something that an artist needs to do.
    But once it went into the generator it changed from pieces of art into assembly line products.

    I've been wondering, theoretically, if I were to buy a bored ape (for example) then print it on a bunch of T-shirts, take those t-shirts to a festival or a fate and sell them, would I be liable for breach of copyright? I know I don't own it even though I've kind of do because because I've bought that image.

    • @ArDeeMee
      @ArDeeMee ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the biggest problem would be that everyone else gets to point and laugh at you. And not on Twitter. Irl.
      Others here pointed out that with the apes you actually aquire rights to the image, so you probably wouldn‘t break copyright.

    Ah, the art world. xD I think probably nothing is more triggering. And the best thing is ... it can't really be cancelled lol. Because it's there on the blockchain. It's why more folks should make really challenging stuff. Really challenging art. Or "art". As long as peeps are willing to spend money on it. It's a descending spiral, really. How little effort is it possible to put into something for money. Well, there were these NFT's that were just lines of text. A fair few of those sold for good money too! ^^ xD hahahahahah
