    I grew up with a mother who would be diagnosed later in life with narcissistic personality disorder. She would often use God as some sort of shield so that others wouldn't find out that she was secretly cruel and controlling. Any time myself or my sister would challenge her unreasonable anger, she would threaten us with hellfire. She was taking the Lord's name in vain.

    • @Zknwlf
      @Zknwlf ปีที่แล้ว

      I feel for you. Same exact situation. A mother who literally God, not Jesus, not the Holy Spirit, talked to her M-F 7:30 am to 9am from spring of '77 to fall of '78. Sadly, some of the things she would claim would be true, thus confusing people as to her sanity/insanity vs prophetess status. Like you experienced, often such people are secretly cruel, controlling to the millimeter, and profoundly narcissistic. Thank God she's been gone for 11 yrs. Hope you find peace - as I know the hurts and scars of such an upbringing last a lifetime. Just thankful you didn't throw God out with the dirty water!

      There is no mention of hell in the Hebrew Bible, therefore the whole Christian invention of hell is carrying God's name in vain.
      The idea that Jesus is God in the flesh is also breaking the third commandment.

    Excellent teaching, and a perspective that I had not heard before. It brings a greater understanding, in that...if I am supposed to carry, or bear the name of the Lord not in vain, then I _absolutely_ should not use His name flippantly...or as a curse word...but as Dr. Heiser has revealed...that is only the beginning, for it is SO MUCH MORE than just that!

    • @joshuastoltzfus4910
      @joshuastoltzfus4910 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I like the way you phrased that. For a while as a Christian I used to utter the Lord's name in vain. Over the years, I really think the Spirit convicted me not to do that. Also over the years, I think He has convicted me to write the pronouns referencing Him with a capital letter. I am not saying that my convictions ought to be everyone's convictions, but I don't think God wants me to say His name apathetically or reference Him with a lower-case and reference myself, "I", with an upper-case. When I see His pronouns under case or His name uttered in a discarded manner, it takes me back. I used to swear like a sailor, make crude jokes, and apathetically utter the Name of salvation and of the God of creation. I really think the Spirit has written it on my heart not to do that. I don't think it represents the character of God well.

I applaud the attitude which you possess...that being, the desire to be holy before the Lord without appearing religious, or self-righteous before others, but rather...genuine. @@apracity7672 not if that person doesn't actually claim to follow God. Plus a person's god isn't NECESSARILY God the Creator. Lots of people worship themselves. If they're saying OMG in this irreverent way and really they are their own god, they're not taking the Name of The LORD in vain. You have to remember, the 10 Commandments were only given to the people of Moses. There's a whole world out there of non-God-worshipping people. It doesn't do to be offended by all their frivolous speech.
      Besides. All of that is external to the ACTUAL ISSUE - which is, people labeling themselves as followers of the God of Abraham without being transformed by His character acting in their lives.

    I'll have to read the book referenced. Being raised in the Deep South a hundred years ago, I'm quite familiar with the concept of 'bearing' a name. However, when I looked up the word in Logos, FactBook uses the application as a to verbally lift up -
    45. to use ⇔ lift up† - to use something, for example verbally, conceived of as lifting it up. Stems: qal, 4.
    qal
    Ex 20:7 לֹ֥א תִשָּׂ֛א אֶת־שֵֽׁם־יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ
    while 'bearing' as I understand the explanation here is used in other verse applications.
    Great! Now I have to tell my wife I'm buying yet another book 🙂

    My sister thinks "taking God's name in vain" is simply cussing with God's name. I said to her: "do you think the Israelites were walking around saying Gdammit or OMG?"
    I think of the scripture which says "these people praise me with their lips but their hearts are far from Me" and would consider THAT to be closer to taking God's name in vain.
    And, if that's the case...many Christians would be guilty of it.

    But in the translations of the Masoretic Text, (i.e., the current and only extant Hebrew text), Ezekiel 28:13 reveals no correlation to Exodus 28:17-20 in any translation; and from translation to translation, the types of stones widely disagree and so too the given orders they are given, in both passages.)

      Sure, because we are supposed to be mindful of our words and actions to see that they glorify God whom we worship. But to say, "OH MY GOD!" or "Jesus Christ!" is not "taking the name of the LORD" at all, let alone "in vain." To "take someone's name" is to identify as a member of their family, as in when a bride takes the name of her new husband or when an qbandoned child takes the name of his adoptive father. In our case, we are adopted into the family of God, so we "take his name." If we take his name without being changed/born again into the new Life he gives us, we take his name "in vain" or uselessly, without effect.

    This is powerful. I always felt that the correct name for "God" was not in the Bible. I knew a Jewish professor who expounded on this...the known name is spoken with reverence and hushed tones...and only by the elder rabbis. To write the name when making a handwritten copy of the Torah, the rabbi must undergo a special cleansing ritual before writing the name of God. Even the secular interpretations of Yahweh and Jehovah are incorrect, but he would not even repeat those names out of reverence. So, while I am disturbed when I get angry and use the word "God" in what followed, I questioned if it was the same thing.
    This gave me a whole new perspective on this "sin."

    One way to really know if what he says is true and Biblical is to cross-reference it with teaching in the New Testament. Paul warned believers about their Christian witness because we bear the name of Christ. This lines up with the OT. Paul pleaded with the early church about how to carefully live among the heathens so they would see a favorable representation of Christ that could lead them to a true faith. Otherwise, the name of Christ is dragged through the mud...very much like it is today. It's why unbelievers call Christians "a bunch of hypocrites" and often refuse the Gospel message b/c they do not see Christians live what they preach. We present a powerless religion. So...YES Heiser is correct that it is more than cussing.

    This gives me the idea that the numbering of the commandments is actually wrong, but I'm not demanding dropping it. The third commandment is actually more like just aspects of the commandment relating to God, along with the 1st, 2nd, and 4th. Of course the Israelites likely never saw it as 10 commandments, just commandments. Probably they knew it just as Christ summed it up, only two, one referring to relationship with God, the other towards fellow humans.

    The Hebrew word for "name" is "Shem".....Orthodox Jews call God "HaShem" ( The Name ).
    Shem was the second son of Noah who received the blessing of "AUTHORITY" , and from whom
    the "Shemites" (Semites / Hebrews / Israelites) came to be known.

    Dr. Heiser started me on a journey two years ago of reading the Bible afresh. After learning some of my tradition's beliefs contradicted scripture (independent fundamentalist Baptist) I started evaluating the claims of different traditions, and in the end, the Bible made me Roman Catholic after a multi-year process. I'll be starting RCIA this September and I can't wait to receive our Lord in the Eucharist. ALSO - a note to anyone who's anti-Catholic, if you're anything like I was, then you think Catholics believe they save themselves through their good works, worship Mary and the Saints, believe in a cannabalistic eucharist, blah blah blah. Through my study I found none of this to be true. If you want to know what the Church actually teaches, then go straight to the horses mouth, not the mouth of your anti-Catholic pastor. I found all the caricatures of catholic beliefs my pastor told me were hopelessly untrue. I honestly felt betrayed.
    Anyways, God bless anyone reading this!

    Excellent exposition on bearing His name. However, I'm surprised this clip did not delve into what it actually means to bear it in "vain." The word vain in Exodus 20:7 is šāv' , which means (emptiness, vanity, falsehood), is the same word used in Psalm 12:2, where can see the practical definition of what it means to take God's Name in vain. "They speak vanity every one with his neighbour: with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak." All the lying, false teachers in the world today speak to their congregants with flattering lips and double hearts, standing in a place where they are supposed to be representatives of God. As the latter part of verse 7 says, "..the LORD will not hold him guiltless.."
