How to build a DIY Miter Saw Stand. This mobile miter saw station has been the backbone of my shop for almost 5 years now, only second to my table saw. It has production stop blocks with an adjustable fence for easy repeatable cuts. The folding wings give almost 4’ of support on both sides so you can easily cut 8’ material. The coolest part of this miter saw stand though is the automated dust collection. I used a cyclone dust collection top on a 5 gallon bucket along with a shop vac and an automated relay. When the miter saw turns on the shop vac turns on and stays on for 5 seconds afterwards. If you’ve been looking for DIY miter saw stand plans I think you’ll love these!

Thanks for the easy to follow plans. I've built 2 sets of base cabinets and the bench with pegboard hutch with one slight modification (shelves with cabinet door instead of drawers on one side). I just picked up this plan set and it will be my next project. I've been needing a mobile miter saw station and fatigued with manually moving my saw all over. I like the mobility. I will build this next and then start in on upper cabinets and then more base cabinets. I've installed electrical outlets and power strips so the bench systems are fully functional. It's already made a huge difference in my garage. Thanks again.

When I used your plans to build mine, my dust collection is a Buckethead on a 5 gallon pail, w/the bottom compartment lined in Rockwool for some sound absorption. Finally I put a quick disconnect on the hose connecting to the saw so I can use a short hose for cleaning up the area around the saw of sawdust in 5 second bursts from the delay of the relay. Generally only takes about 3 bursts of the saw to vacuum up all the errant sawdust that didn't get sucked up the 1st time!

Hey Brad, great plans and fun build. I'm about to wrap it up and discovered that the standard 1-1/2" piano hinge from Home Depot has way too much play for the wings. Lateral movement front to back at the end of the wing is unbelievable. Home Depot's hinge is is very loose at the pin between the leafs. Perhaps there is a heavier hinge that you can recommend or I may try to use a pair of standard door hinges with 1/4" pin for each wing. Keep up the good work! Thanks!

It seems to me you have a great deal of faith in fasteners between the plies. Nevertheless, those are all fine improvements on the basic design. Yours is as good enough project that I've watched it three times now. Thank you.

Brad: I want to thank you for publishing this video and am purchasing the plans. I have a 12" Dewalt Compound Sliding Miter Saw and a contractor stand. Since I am getting up in years the 12" miter saw is just getting to heavy to store and then have to set it up on the contractor stand every time I need want to do a project. This seems to be a great solution for my limited shop space, which seems to be a common issue for most weekend, project, woodworkers. I have read a lot of comments and there are some concerns expressed about strength of the wings. My thoughts are that they are pretty strong as the weight on the outside of wings is transferred to the bottom of the cabinet.
One question: Could sanded 3/4" pine be used instead of birch plywood? I know that the birch looks nicer but is there any strength reason you chose birch?

Brad what do you think of the Kreg ACS table and saw? Been looking into it and would like to hear what you think of it!

Hey Brad, love the design and the video. You totally inspired me and I just built one myself. Haven't had a chance to use it yet though, but I'm wondering - are your wings super solid, or do they move around a bit? My wings move a little, but I'm thinking I may have bought cheap piano hinges. I also shorted my wing support to about 12-14" tall at the hinge, which could be contributing.

You'll have a little big of wiggle in most hinges (more in cheaper ones). Just register it to the same spot when calibrating and cutting.

Got this set of plans and two others. Brad we need a portable bench top jointer stand with extension wings. I can see how modifying the Miter Saw stand would work. I challenge thee.

Love your designs and videos, although I must admit to being partial to more traditional joinery. Question: there are three items plugged in to the iVac - the tool (miter saw), the vacuum and something labeled Auxiliary. What is plugged in to Aux? Thanks.

    • @Fixthisbuildthat
      @Fixthisbuildthat  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It's actually the box itself. The box has two plugs, vac input that connects to vac power receptacle and tool input that connects to both the tool power and aux receptacles. so you could power the vac power and tool power receptacles separately. Or you can do what I did and run the vac input to the axillary receptacle which basically just let's you run it off one power cord and wall outlet. I know that's probably confusing, but look at it in the vid and should make sense.

I finally finished this having had bit la of time over the last few weeks. it is fantastic. well worth the time. methinks brad’s head may explode were he to see it and see the lack of symmetry in the screws. but it was too cold up here to plane that out. it was eyeballed.
some tips for newbies from a newbie:
    - get pre counter sunk piano hinges. i used #8 5/8” screws and put them in all the holes. and the wings wouldn’t fold down cuz the heads stuck up. so i had to screw in every other (and the opposite on the other side) to get them to fold down
*question for experienced folks - are there flat wood screws?
    - invest in a counter sink bit. i used to bigger bit as i didn’t have one and it ain’t pretty.
    - if you have a smaller mitre saw,
like my dewalt mitre saw, wait to make the fences until you’ve made the box and wings as well as putting your mitre saw on top (don’t fully screw it down yet) to make longer fences that will extend up to your saw’s fence.
    - for the above statement - i realized this extension would be helpful after putting in the saw. i didn’t realize it was not centered and slightly askew. so my fences look a bit angled. and again, would likely make brad’s head explode :-).
    - i made a “mistake” on one side and the cut out is at the back. having said that, it worked out better for me to line up the screw on the support to the wing. let’s chok that up to a happy accident.
    - you’ll need more screws than you think.
overall - this was a fantastic set of plans that are perfect as is and gave me an opportunity to think and adjust to fit my needs. it is compact. i use the shelves for tool storage and it’s been awesome. so many lesson learned for future projects.
    have fun with it!

I have the same issue with #8, 5/8" screws, lol! There is a flat head screw (think they call in pan head) and will head to the HW store to check this out. Worst case, drill new holes into one side of piano hinge where the other side does not touch!

Great build, Brad. I feel your pain about screw hole spacing. I, too, am an engineer. When I had a new garage door installed, I had the company leave the weather stripping for me to install. I carefully measured for the nails so I didn't have to see random spacings like they would do.

I have a Wen planer that produces a good bit of snipe. I've McGyvered a longer bed which helps but it just doesn't work for my garage shop. I have thought about making this stand but modifying it for my planer. Using the wings, again modified for the planer, would provide a significant bed and would go a long way towards reducing snipe. I would love to hear any and all comments and suggestions. Love this channel.

Great Build. I love all the extras you made. I love the fact that you readily confess to being a perfectionist...so am I. So I too made a miter stand based on April's design and when I went to drop in the miter saw...Bwahahaha...You bet!! I forgot to measure the width of the miter saw base!! #^%$)*(^&%(II!!!!!
Being new to woodworking in general, I tried to take it in stride.
I gave myself a break to beat myself up and to think of how I could salvage the last 6 hours of work. I managed to come up with a work around and now have a very usable miter station.
One thing I have noticed using piano hinges is that I need to use an extension off the saw itself as opposed to the support wings. The piano hinges have just enough play in them that I don't always get an accurate cut. Other than that, I am so happy with it. I do however have to change from regular casters to locking casters.
Thanks again for all of your great videos! You are both informative and entertaining.
