      @@daafukulookinat4965 No one was aware that the cabin was depressurized until people started loosing consciousness, and acute hypoxia affects people differently. Andreas could have been close to one of the portable masks at the time and barely managed to get it on.
      The honest truth is that we will never know how he got to a mask or why it took so long for him to get to the cockpit. What we do know for certain is that he entered the security code for the cockpit door, sent 6 MAYDAY calls (but on the wrong frequency, he didn't know), and attempted as best he could with the pilot training he had to save the flight.

      Those people on board werent dead, just unconscious. Their cause of death was the impact of the plane hitting ground. In the offical report from the AAIASB it is stated that every person on board had heart function till the point of impact.
      I quote :
      "All passenger and cabin crew samples tested negative for carbon monoxide and volatile poisons. The forensic report concluded that the aircraft occupants had heart function during the impact. The report noted that this did not necessarily imply that they were alert."

      @@tranceyy generally yes, but you have to remember that brain damage only occurs when your brain is almost completely stripped of oxygen. At 8,800m the air still contains about 1/3 the amount of oxygen one would have at a normal altitude.
      While this is certainly enough to lose consciousness for untrained people, it is not enough to cause permanent brain damage in that period of time.
      For example there are people who attempt to climb Mount Everest without oxygen, and those people don't suffer permanent damage.

      The pilot didn't do his preflight checklist correctly. That would have solved everything. It is soley his fault for not doing that specifically. I was in the military for years, and a 18 year old just out of boot camp can complete any checklist you give him/her as long as they know what each item on the checklist is.

  • @Domhnall_A_Ghalltachd
    @Domhnall_A_Ghalltachd 4 ปีที่แล้ว +44

    There is a very good episode of Air Crash Investigation about this disaster. In that episode it reveals that the only reason Andreas took this flight (which he was not scheduled to be on) was because his girlfriend was also on the flight.
    His father was also in the Greek military (or him I can't remember) and they both enjoyed activities such as diving and mountain climbing which may have explained how he was able to survive on low altitude.
    It took him a long time to gain acsess to the cockpit because the door was locked. It will not be known if he randomly guessed the code or more likely accessed the code from the senior flight attendant.
    Sadly however even if he had brought the plane down successfully almost all would have suffered critical brain damage due to the length of time at high altitude with little oxygen.

    I did a lot of research on this once as the whole thing was very troubling and interesting. The saddest part for me is that if Andreas would have landed the plane he would saved all those lives. However the effects of hypoxia means everyone would have suffered irreparable brain damage. For me that's just such a stranger fate than death, all those families getting a live corpse instead of a dead one. I think that would have made the grievance process far worse and prolonged than it had it be. Very very sad story this one.

    • @TheSecondVersion
      @TheSecondVersion 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Oh yeah. In law school we covered one case of a woman who underwent a routine gall bladder surgery, but her surgeons incorrectly intubated her airway, so her brain was oxygen depleted for several minutes. The doctors didn't even realize anything was wrong until someone noticed her fingernails were turning blue. She was left in a vegetative state.
      What was extra haunting was that the litigation took *20 years* before it was finally settled by the Supreme Court. So that entire time, her grieving family incurred expenses to keep her brain-dead body alive.

      @@DominikoPL But why do they even need to rely on a warning light and then a crew response? If the sensors have detected that the cabin isn't pressurised at a dangerous altitude, then surely, surely it should be the case that cabin pressurisation is automatically activated? And why don't worded warnings show up on a digital screen indicating exactly what the warning is, like "low cabin pressure", etc.

    This one is particularly sad. Only one conscious person aboard the plane, who took the controls to try and save everyone on board but he couldn't because it ran out of fuel. The amount of grief and guilt that probably caused, on top of the fear of his own impending death, is just unimaginable how tough it had to be to deal with all of that. But why did the guy wait for more than 2 hours before calling for assistance? He might have been totally horrified and scared. If there was another attendant with the portable oxygen, maybe at least they two would make it out alive... teamwork was horrible anyway (oxygen masks deploy, and staff don't ask the captains what's up?) This might be the saddest disaster of all.

      He did try to make a mayday call, but the aircraft was in a frequency that was out of range (Larnaca Air space if I’m not mistaken), so the flight attendant was actually recorded on the black boxes making 3-4 mayday calls but no one heard him because he didn’t realize the aircraft was on the wrong frequency. It’s also sad because the operations manager nearly prevented the accident but the captain decided to ignore him. Just thought I’d clear things up🤗

      I think as well at that altitude with no oxygen its the same height as everest. Although it takes maybe one minute to walk down an aircraft normally imagine walking it like Everest. He had to bust the cockpit door open. It's really interesting there seemed to be a lot of controversy mentioning that at the time because apparently after 9/11 it became mandatory but a lot of airline employees were displeased with it and a man mentioned this exact situation in a stance against it. He literally had to force his way in with limited oxygen.

    Also, every child that is brought up well knows to put his toys back in the box. Same with a machine, you fiddle it with you reverse all your steps at the end. Cascade of errors: Engineers don't reset switch. Pre-flight checks were sloppy. Then misreading of alarm.

    I've seen loads of these air accident recreations and none of them have made me worried about flying... until this one. So much about this incident is baffling and scary. Are planes really this poorly designed? The plane's sensors have clearly detected that there's low air pressure inside the cabin (which will incapacitate/kill all on board), so why is it left to warnings/crew response to turn cabin pressurisation on? Surely it should automatically turn on if low air pressure is detected at a dangerous altitude?! And why isn't there a digital screen giving a clear worded notification of what the warning is, such as "low air pressure". Honestly, which idiots designed these planes?

    • @crashbandicoot4everr
      @crashbandicoot4everr 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The newer 737-800s have a "CABIN ALTITUDE" light along with the warning horn. But since the accident aircraft was a 737-300, it didn't have that feature. Manual operation of the cabin pressurization system has to exist in case of a rapid/explosive decompression or when an engineer needs to test the pressurization on the ground using the APU. Of course it's a very bad idea to use the same warning sound as the take-off config warning, but those pilots were supposed to check the pressurization system before take-off and after take-off.

    The saddest part of all this to me is the Helios Engineer specifically asking about the pressurization switch. I know hindsight is 20/20 and all, but it really makes you wish he would have pressed them to answer his question instead of answering the Captain's question in response. He probably knew that the Takeoff Config Alarm and the Depressurization Alarm sounded alike and knew that was most likely the problem right away.

    Great animations. As usual, it takes multiple failures for a modern commercial plane to crash. I don't understand the behavior of the FA, who had a commercial pilot's license. It looks like everyone on the plane would have become unconscious by about 0935 at the latest as the supplemental O2 ran out. It was from that point until 1149 that the F-16 pilot reported seeing someone moving around the flight deck. I believe the emergency O2 tank on a 737 is a D cylinder, and it should last about 3 hours with a rebreather mask. If the FA was following procedure, he should have gone on the emergency tank ASAP after the masks dropped.
    My question is what was the FA doing during that approx two hour period? He wasn't just an FA, he was a qualified commercial pilot. He hadn't qqualified on a 737 at that point, but he should have known the masks dropping indicated big trouble. If he would have gotten to the cockpit by, say, even 1000, he would have had about 45 minutes of fuel left and could have started a descent to FL 120 so he no longer required the oxygen. I'm pretty certain that everyone on the plane but him was dead so I can't see him trying to revive passengers for almost two hours without once checking the cockpit. He was heard calling "Mayday" five times on the CVR but the radio was still set to Larnia ATC, so the aircraft was too far away to be heard by them. It appears from the CVR that he didn't get in the captain's seat until shortly before the #1 engine shut down, presumably from fuel starvation. If he wasn't on O2 for the entire period, he also would have been dead for acute hypoxia. It only takes a fit person about 30 seconds to go unconscious at 34,000 feet, so he must have been on the emergency tank right off the bat. I'm just baffled about this, but maybe someone knows more details. I haven't yet read through the whole investigation report, so maybe the answers are in there.
