  • It's been a while since Ryan (Bulldog Chaser) and I have done a vintage truck rescue...here we go again! This one features two trucks: a 1975 International Harvester Fleetstar 2010A single-axle tractor (549 gas V8/5-speed with 2-speed rear), and a Mack B-61T single axle tractor (673 Thermodyne with 10-speed Duplex). We brought along his neighbor Brian and his father-in-law Bill, plus a skid steer...we needed all the help we could get.
    Ryan originally went to purchase the B-model, and ended up making a deal for the IH and a vintage 35-ton Rogers lowboy trailer as well. The IH had been parked for about a year but was in great shape with no rust and good tires. It just needed to be woken up. After hooking up a battery and putting gas in it, the starter would not engage the flywheel, so I crawled under it (in the mud) to tighten the starter cable and work the starter gear loose. After some cranking and a few shots of gas (and starting fluid), it roared to life. We freed up the brakes on the lowboy trailer and hitched it up. Also had to cut a few wood boards for the deck so we could haul the B-model with it...there was no room on Ryan's smaller trailer behind the dually with the skid steer on it.
    The B-model would not start after hooking up a few batteries and giving it starting fluid, so we had to pull it out of its spot with the skid steer. It was sunk in the ground and the brakes were stuck and would not free up, so we had to dig the wheels out and rock it out of the mud with the skid steer, while four of us pushed on the bumper to get it up the slope. I then steered it onto the trailer while Ryan pushed it from behind with the skid steer, and we got the truck chained down.
    After airing up the tires on the IH and the lowboy, and filling both tanks with gas, we headed home...the 549 engine was a little finicky and could probably use a good carb rebuild and fuel system cleaning, but it did OK pulling the B-model and heavy lowboy behind it. I think I'll stick to diesel power for trucks this size. I have a LOT of respect for the old-timers who made a living driving these old rough-riding and gutless workhorses. These were the trucks that built this country...from a time period when men were men!

    The farm I worked at back in the 1980s had a green and white International 2010A. Tandem axle, 290 Cummins, 13 over with 513 gears in the back. She wasn't the nicest as far as creature comforts go but that was the most dependable truck I ever drove. She would pull the world. I seen her pull 1200 bushels of beans out of the field when their newer 4070 Transtar II would not. It was grossing over 95,000 lbs. It was great farm truck.

      @@MichaelTJD60 I was really glad to see you all made it to your destination with that bad fuel, running in bad fuel is what took my L model Mack out of service for a while... she’s still not quite right but usually a good shot of lead additive seems to get her running the way she should again!

      We didn't make the trip home with the old fuel. We poured about 20 gallons of fresh gas in before leaving, and then stopped to fill up both tanks again once we were on the road. It will definitely need the fuel system cleaned before it's ready to be put to use.

    Back in the mid 90's.. I ran across an old 1972 IH Loadstar 1700 w/304cid - 5spd single spd rear, 5 yrd dump bed.. I bought it just to restore, go to truck shows, etc. - I'm a retired Union Elevator Mechanic.. turned wrenches for 40+ yrs (since I was a kid too 😊) .. I simply tore it down in my shop, rebuilt it from ground up, new paint, etc. - I had every single item working on it.. added a cool Pioneer stereo system, custom built speaker box behind the seat.. it was one sharp looking 1700!!.. it SHINED!.. I did not build it w/ intention of it being put back to work.. just do shows w/ it.. enjoyed it greatly about 4 yrs.. local guy made me a RIDICULOUS offer on it.. well, if he wanted to pay that amount of $$$ for it... Sold!!.. that's been 25 yrs ago.. it is about 12 miles from my house now.. flipping guy drove it home.. parked it beside his shop in PRISTINE condition.. TO THIS DAY!!.. it has NEVER once moved!!.. TRUE STORY!!.. from the day he bought it.. he drove it home and parked it.. dont bother me.. I made BANK off of it.. I just thought it kinda shitty at first.. I see it all the time .. dont let it bother me anymore.. STILL has the SAME 25 yr old brand new tires on it!!

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking me along for the ride. Oh yeah, a good tune up is all your IH needs. Use a paper matchbook cover or a fresh dollar bill folded in half to gap your points and advance the timing ever so slightly. Make sure she's got a good clean air ffilter and fuel filter. She'll do you a fine job. It should get about 6 or 7 mpg. once you get it tuned up and running right. Gas was only 40 cents per gallon in that trucks hay day.

Looks like that thing has "Rolls Kenardly" syndrome - Rolls down one hill and Kenardly get up the next. Hopefully a tune up and tweak the timing ( making sure vacuum advance is working) will give her a little more pep. Dad's International had the 304 V8. It ran good but had to make sure she was getting full fuel to the carb and proper ignition timing or she wouldn't pull herself.

    Is it a 304 or a 345. I had one that had a "Red Diamond" 6 cyl. Gas with a 5 speed main box with a work in 4th and 5th. and a electric 2-speed axle. A lot of those old 2010A's had that same transmission. It works very well. If it has that big coil spring in the middle under the back of the cab, it will ride like a Cadilac.

      We had Loadstar busses with the 394 V-8 and they sure ran the hills here with no trouble. We had a S1900 farm truck with I think it was a 446 gas V-8 it was thirsty but it also had pretty good power hauling 4 cords of firewood.

      Air gap is probably out of adjustment...it should be .018". Check the three slots in the brake plate with a feeler gauge and make sure the gap is even in each slot and not too tight or too loose.

    Send the VIN for the Mack to the Mack museum and they'll pull the production record on that truck you'll know how it was spec'd, when exactly it was built, who initially ordered it. They keep the build sheet info on every truck they make, even that far back.

    • @MichaelTJD60
      @MichaelTJD60  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As far as I know, the museum has been shut down for months. It took them 6+ months (maybe closer to a year) to send the paperwork for his Superliner after he bought it two years ago....this B-61 won't be around that long, he might have it sold already.

    Any of those big gas V eights need high test gasoline to run properly and the lead additive the unleaded fuel makes it run to lean and usually blows the exhaust manifold gaskets if you were pulling a hill at night the manifolds will be glowing

    • @MichaelTJD60
      @MichaelTJD60  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      High-test or recreational gas would definitely help this one run better. A local gas station sells 91-octane recreational gas with no ethanol...that's what this truck needs.
