    The Dutch sea walls have always been impressive and interested me, so this was a great video from the best engineering and construction channel on TH-cam. Also, impressive how people were able to build the walls originally without modern technology, and cool to see the innovation in modern technology to make what was impossible possible!

      1) They have been gaining land on the sea since the 12th century.

    What I don't get is why there still isn't a railroad across it. To get from the south to the north of The Netherlands, or vice versa, you have to go all the way around the Ijsselmeer, a massive detour. It doesn't make any sense especially when you consider that there is still enough room to lay track and that construction would be incredibly cheap due to it all being government owned land and there being no structures or even terrain elevation issues.

    • @prof1crl
      @prof1crl 4 ปีที่แล้ว +300

      Maybe commercial railroads would add too much weight to it? As for passenger trains, couldn't that also be achieved with bus services?

      Because there aren’t that many people who will travel from the north of Noord-Holland to Friesland. Most people stay and travel between Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht and other every city in that triangle (known as Randstad)
      I live near Amsterdam, and drove on the afsluitdijk just once in my whole life.

    • @Hedvaa
      @Hedvaa 4 ปีที่แล้ว +159

      That was the plan and they tried. But it didn't seem profitable. You can see a groove for the tracks at Amsteldiepdijk. They build
      foundations at the sluice for train bridges. Space saved for the railroad are now used for the highway A7 when they broaden the road.

      That is the thing.. The USA, and other large nations, have so much land, they are not in such a do or die critical situation. With Netherlands it is literally do or die. This tiny nation, this land is all they got! No one else will give them any for sure.Their back is to the sea, they got nowhere else to go! That is why they are so desperate and intense about this. ALso they had a huge flood in 1953 and 10,000 people drowned! So they lead the way on this sea wall technology because they have to, no choice..

    • @SpaghettiKillah
      @SpaghettiKillah 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Because against the sea, a 7 mt tall reinforced wall is better than a 12 mt weak one...have you heard of corrosion?
      It doesn't matter how tall the wall is, if it's not strong enough to withstand the pounding of the water, its base will get eroded and then collapse.

    • @TheCaptainSplatter
      @TheCaptainSplatter 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Probably will happen in a few decades. But at the moment its erosion they have to deal with. So maby around 2050s or so, a new retrofit this time increasing the height.

    • @G_unz
      @G_unz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I believe the logic is as follows: When you have a levee and water comes over the top during heavy weather, the levee starts to erode at the inside. Erosion at the inside combined with high water pressure on the outside breaches the levee and then floods the land behind it. If you reinforce the levee in such a way that you can take a lot of water coming over the top during a storm, nothing much happens. It is relatively a very small amount of water which doesn't hurt anyone as long as it doesn't erode the levee. This is a very efficient solution, you technically let the levee fail (water comes over the top), but as long as the structure can withstand it and the amount of water coming over is limited, nobody gets hurt. During extreme weather the afsluitdijk becomes a half-assed weir with harmless discharge.

      Someone send this to me but I can not react to that for some reason. It does not even show up in this thread.
      Quote;
      Tom van Aarle Can you not read? How is he blaming "everything" on the Dutch lol? It always baffles me how some of my Dutch countrymen go in defense mode when there is even a slight referral to our colonial past. Which, by the way, is only 1 generation away for some, including myself, whose parents were born and raised in the Dutch Indies. Yeah and let's downplay the effect of 400 years violent occupation and exploitation of Indonesia (e.g. the seizing of natural resources, land, goods; disguised and less disguised enslavement; rape; killing, the denial of basic human and political rights; and so on). How dare anyone suggest that any of those affect todays society, economy and politics in Indonesia hah. Within 1 generation, in the wonderful fucked up condition the country was left by the Netherlands, post-colony and post-war, Indonesia should be thriving now, right? Lol since we ourselves did so well on our own after WW2, right? Well, if it wasn't for the American billion dollar boost aka Marshall Plan, the Netherlands would be bankrupt now. And if we hadn't had our wonderful colonies (thus wealth/funds) pre-war, we would't have had our precious Afsluitdijk. Misschien niet meer dat belerende vingertje naar Indonesië opsteken dan?
      My reacton to that;
      It appears you can not read yourself.
      How do you suppose the Dutch choosing Jakarta as the capitol of the then colony a very long time ago is causing the city to sink today?
