I lived in Japan in the nineties, and worked at the Daihatsu Shiga Ken Gamoh Gun factory. The Mira and Hijet line of Key vehicles is one of the most reliable in Japan. They are very persistent about the quality of the products.

Daihatsu Hijet is one great vehicle. In Japan they are mostly used for farm and utility works, but they are also converted into compact campervans.

I agree with you. I'm just now starting to hear about these kei cars and trucks. I would love to have one of these trucks, but couldn't register it. These vehicles make so much more since to me than the 15 mpg trucks we drive now just to go to Walmart. Large vehicles definitely have their place but it would just be nice to have these as an option in the American market.

You guys are lucky you can get new ones. Here in the USA they have to be 25 years old in order to be street-legal, newer ones are only legal for offroad use. I'd really love to own one of these, it's exactly what I need to putt around my property and do chores. UTVs are too expensive for what you get and used trucks are as well unless you buy something totally clapped-out.

    Hi Johnny... another great review.
I like the O-1OOkmh time you do on virtually every car but I think you should also do a test of 1OOkmh - O kmh. Just an idea to show how good or bad the brakes are on each car you review. Just an idea I'd throw out to you. Not sure if you have thought about this or not. Just an idea. Anyways keep the great content coming mate.👍👍

My 1996 4WD Hijet will do 110 KPH with more to spare with 42 (when new) HP. I've never tried to do a max power test on the old engine but I routinely drive it at 100 KPH on rural roads and thoroughfares around town. I don't take it on US highways. Great little truck and very capable with a full size bed. Punches well above its weight class. Protectionist regulations prevent us from having new kei trucks in the US. We're limited to 25 years and older. :-(

    • @RossReviewsau

I’ve seen some new ones in the states not sure how they get around the 25 year loop hole tho?

    • @Liberty4Ever
      @Liberty4Ever ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@RossReviewsau - It's frustrating when you need a government bureaucrat to do something like register your mini truck and they're slow and surley, officious and not very intelligent. On the plus side, many states outlawed mini trucks and the county bureaucrats don't know that so they register them anyway. Similarly, there are federal regulations that don't allow individually imported cars newer than 25 years to be used on the roads, but the enforcement is left to the states and once again, it's a rare enough situation that some people are able to bluff their way through the process with their local county clerk. I don't like government bureaucracies, but if we must have them, please let them be too lazy and inept to be good at their jobs.

@RossReviewsau you can import new ones as offroad use only on dot form , they have to have a speed limiter installed restricted to 25 mph but I know people remove them once brought here and get them registered to be on road in certain states 😅😂

This is a cool small truck, would love to have one just to run around town and do errands. You have to accept the vehicle for its design limitations and keep in mind the environment it was designed to operate in. I have a sub-compact car that I really like, it has a 1.2 liter engine and a CVT front wheel drive that I use to run around in, cheap to drive and easy to park, it is basically a city car but does well on the open road.

I live in a area with rough parking and mow lawns. It is hard to drag around a trailer and find parking. This truck looks good to mow lawns with, with roof racks you could put ladders on top and with trimmer racks you could have plenty of room for snippers, mowers, backpack blowers and poison bottles. I gotta get one of these things especially since you are so cheap compared to mainstream utes. You could buy 2 of these for just over the price of a high end ute.

In order to comply with environmental measures and fuel economy standards, this model has indeed received mixed reviews in Japan, with less horsepower and less vigor than the previous model.
But, this is clearly too late. It accelerates as if the vehicle had been driven 200,000 km. The manufacturer's unofficial measured 0-100km/h average for the same model CVT is 20 seconds just.
Have you run it through a break-in period? Also, are you using the proper gas? Light cars need to use conventional Regular 91 to produce horsepower with less displacement. Alcohol blended 91-E10 will reduce power. The alcohol blend must be less than 2%. RON value of 91 and MON value of 83 or higher is recommended.
This engine and EMU are not designed for export and are optimized for Japan's own regular gas.

Peter, it will have buckets of power for your farm and if you want lots more power just put it in low range, it even has a diff lock, the fact it doesn't do 100k is a product of gearing not lack of power, so unless you are trialing some new "high speed farming" technique, park the navara and get one of these.
As a farm vehicle think of it as very comfortable, fuel efficient, safe, covered, heated, stereoed, road registerable, quad bike or UTV with a usable tray.

In recent years, the maximum speed for light vehicles has not changed much from that of standard vehicles. The maximum speed limit for light vehicles on motorways is between 100 km/h and 120 km/h. In Japan, the maximum speeds of regular cars and kei cars (turbo-engined) are the same. This means that there is no particular difference or disadvantage when driving on public roads in a light car and a standard car on a daily basis, just in terms of speed.
